Being a manager while also being a human is wild. Had to sit through a training session today on the new absence policy now that we're entitled to sick pay from day 1, since the government made it a legal requirement. They kept talking about the change with derision and expecting us to agree. As if i didnt pass out on shift last month because i couldnt afford to take a day off.
"The business is taking a hit because the wages went up :(" ME AND MY COLLEAGUES CAN NOW AFFORD TO EAT PROPERLY.
Like i get paid 70p more than the base level team member pay, stop talking to me like im not also an employee. Its also annoying I also can't unionise the same way now im a manager. Its not like im in any better situation than the rest of the workforce. (Im not. I have to stay at least a half hour extra unpaid each shift to finish things, the extra pay doesnt cover the extra time. Also the stress of being a manager in hospitality? Not worth that tiny amount of money. Also, thats before tax, the different works out at like 50p after tax. And means im paying back student loan when i wouldnt be otherwise.)
But also before being a manager i hung out with socialist activists and when i became a manager they all got weird around me. Like no, i didnt take this job to be a traitor to my people i took it so my sweet line manager didnt have to keep working 16 hour shifts every few weeks. I took it so my coworker struggling with her mental health had a manager who understood, and would be kind and patient with her. I took the job so that when someone yelled at my colleagues, i could step in and fix it. Im just sick of feeling like i dont fit in anywhere anymore. Ive ended up cut off from everyone.
