The thing about that video of Shelby Mueller snatching and tearing the sign out of Jovani Rubioās hands that I havenāt seen many people talking about:Ā
if the roles were reversed, and he did to a young, blonde white woman what she did to him, he would have been violently attacked, arrested or even worse
What I think bothers me most about that video is that (consciously or otherwise) Mueller KNOWS full well that her white privilege will protect her. Sheās smiling and laughing the whole time. Her physical safety in an ocean of white neocons was never a serious consideration for her
By contrast, Jovani Rubio knew that if he reacted angrily to Muellerās provocation, his fate would have been sealed, or at the very least, he would have been deemed as being unnecessarily āangryā even though he had every right to be. I think their two reactions are a perfect analogy for the unspoken power white supremacy and white privilege. White people typically get to charge around with their damaging āopinionsā and actions like bulls in a china shop, but black and brown people in the same situations have to constantly measure our reactions, even when we are in the right. We donāt get to beĀ ācolorblindā or āignoreā our race, or how our individual actions may reflect on everyone who isnāt white.Ā
We donāt get to be carefree, youthful āindividualsā
