Valerie June Hockett, known as Valerie June, is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Memphis, Tennesse. Her sound encompasses a mixture of folk, blues, gospel, soul, country, and bluegrass. Her recent album, The Order of Time, has gained popularity among country and gospel audiences alike. But where did her roots come and inspiration for her latest music come from?
Oh my Mum's big into her. She and my Dad always go to her London concerts.
mesmerised by this random photo taken by the hiking club I'm part of. the soft cool tones and radiant warm tones, the composition and lighting...
I think this is the best part of this photo. the point of that entire trip was to find and read an old storybook that they knew was at a particular hut. he genuinely is reading it out loud to the others. I can't remember what it was about, but this scene is the cozy and well deserved reward of a wild endeavour through rugged terrain. I think that's beautiful [:
[ID 1: A group of three hikers sitting at a table. Two of them are resting, the other is flipping through a book. Various items are scattered across the table, and they are lit by a small candle.
ID 2: Tumblr tag that says: what is he reading that put them to sleep. End IDs.]

oh it's not abandoned!! it's maintained by the department of conservation [: I dunno if "hut" means something different outside of aotearoa but here a hut is like a lodge or a cabin in the bush/wilderness.
We would call that a bothy here in Scotland. Though they are usually maintained by charities and individuals not the government.

I feel like a lot of people complaining about the "culturally Christian" label are losing sight of the fact that its usage here largely stems from their own refusal to acknowledge how Christianity still shapes "secular" Western culture? This was never about declaring any past affiliation with a church to be some great stain on your soul that cannot be removed (hell, it wasn't even about disparaging Christianity as a whole). It was about naming the phenomenon of coming across people who purported to hate Christianity, yet got mad at Jews and others for not celebrating inherently Christian holidays in a "secular" fashion, were overtly hostile to people from backgrounds where religious practice and atheism are not incompatible because it didn't match their world view, and failed to grasp how certain strains of militant atheism which seek to "save" people from their own "primitive" or "obsolete" cultural beliefs might not be terribly indistinguishable to some from white Christian colonialism. It was responding to people who saw themselves as truly neutral, while refusing to concede that neutrality itself can be extremely subjective. What do we call anti-Christian lip-service heavily paired with a culturally informed defence of Christianity-derived hegemony, if not "cultural Christianity?" And why do you care more about what we call it than the fact that it exists, anyway? Why are you more comfortable yelling at Jews on Tumblr dot com for discussing these experiences than you are with unpacking your own unconscious biases? Why is naming toxic behaviour somehow worse than the toxic behaviour itself? This label did not manifest out of nowhere. You played your part first.
#cultural white western Christianity that this#Ethiopia has been a culturally Christian country since the 4th century ad#Greek and Russian orthodox Christianity is different again#trying to tell me the way Christianity affect life in Ethiopia Greece and USA are all the same because Christianity is all the same#sounds very US white American
@thesilversunā I donāt entirely understand what you are trying to say with these tags, but I usedĀ āwesternā as a descriptor largely to differentiate between regions where Christianity is the majority religion vs places where itās a minority religion, because I think thatās an important distinction (most of my cousins on the Bengali side of my family are actually Christian, which makes them part of a religious minoritiy, as they live in India, and thus are impacted currently by a rise in right-wing Hindu nationalism). That being said, there are plenty of Christian-majority countries in the Global South where the same and/or similar issues of Christian hegemony can and do exist, so this is not exclusively a Western or white phenomenon, despite the fact that this particular conversation is largely centring on culture in North America and Europe.Ā I donāt think anybody is disputing that Christianity has different movements and denominations, nor has anybody said thereās one monolithic form of Christian practice. But thatās not super relevant to what weāre discussing, which is religious and cultural hegemony (which isnātĀ something unique only to Christians, btw! As I mentioned above, thereās Hindu hegemony in India, along with Buddhist hegemony in parts of Southeast Asia, Muslim hegemony in Islamic states, Jewish hegemony is Israel, etc).Ā
You say it sounds veryĀ āUS white Americanā to imply that the way Christianity impacts life in Ethiopia or Russia or Greece isnāt different, and Iām sure thatās very accurate and true when discussing the lives of people in thoseĀ countries who themselves are Christians!Ā But from a Jewish perspective... I mean, you literally just rattled off a list of countries from which very long-standing and sizeable populations of Jews had to flee due Christian antisemitism (well, actually, most Greek Jews werenāt able to flee; the vast of majority of them were deported to Auschwitz and murdered). Iām sure it isĀ true that Christianity affects the daily lives of Christians in both Ethiopia and Russia very differently, but if you look at the how Christianity has impacted the lives of Jews in those countries, the narratives are actually pretty fucking similar: Instances of forced conversions, expulsions, confiscations of property, ghettoisation, loss of rights, pogroms and massacres over the course of centuries. So like... in the context of minorities talking about their broader experiences under hegemony, really how much does that other difference even matter?Ā
For example, England, Wales, and Scotland are all distinct countries, each with their own languages and cultures, and this is generally very important to know. But if you were an Indian person living under the British Raj, then that distinction between British nationalities would likely be fairly meaningless as it pertained to your own situation. āThereās a British guy out front, says he wants to split Bengal in half again.āĀ āOh, is he Welsh?āĀ Like, in the context, it just really wouldnāt have mattered.Ā
Again, hegemony is not specifically a Christian thing at all. Itās a majority rule and influence thing. But [predominantly Western] Christian hegemony is whatās being talked about at the moment, and maybe Iām just missing something, butĀ Iām honestly not sure how those other things are relevant to this specific discussion.Ā
Maybe this is mean, but trying to divide up Christian-majority countries based on types of Christianity is akin to responding to discussions of white privilege by talking about Italian and Irish peopleā yes, their relationship with whiteness is complex and deserves consideration, but if you are discussing white supremacist culture and not centering people of color, youāre not actually doing the work to alleviate the issue for those most affected.
Protestants and Catholics might oppress each other, but they share most basic pillars of belief and are unified in suppressing other religious and cultural groups that might provide a different context
I think it depends on the context tbh. Like I think it would be quite hard to talk about religious oppression where I live (Scotland) without talking about sectarianism in part because the antisemitism I face has at times been entangled with existing anti-Catholic sentiment in a context where being non-Christian places you closer to Catholicism in many people's minds. Like it definitely can be a way to divert the topic of conversation but I think it doesn't have to be. And honestly in my particular context I think sectarian oppression doesn't get centered enough. It's all very complex and imo definitely depends on the specific context where a discussion is being held.
hey.

These are drawings I made for a zine that focuses on Ukrainian mythology. Unfortunately the printing was postponed due to war, but I hope it gets printed sooner or later, it has lots of talented artists. Here you can see rusalky (can be translated as "mermaids"). They water goddesses, according to folklore they are born from spirits of umarried women and children who died from drowning. They lure people with their beautiful singing, later tickling them to death and draging them underwater.
I'm still mildly pissed off that the government's big COVID aid project at the start of the pandemic was aimed at theatres and not like, care workers or supermarket staff. Are you at least still feeling the benefit?
Oh it wasn't aimed at theatres - it all went to the landlords who own theatres, and the private equity companies who own big theatrical brands like Secret Cinema. Actors got nothing.
you know those little critical thinking questions that they had at the end of short stories in literature textbooks? we should start putting those in posts. i miss them,,,,,,
questions:
what call to action is the author arguing for?
why does this work lack capitalization? what might this tell you about the author? what might this tell you about the context this work is meant to be read in?
is the addition of the questions self referential? does that make this post humorous? how so? how would the post be different without the addition of the questions?

Constructive Criticism
My Eco-Terrorist Son is Absolutely Dripless
I still spend days, weeks every year thinking about how this critique pre-dates the advent of Programming Socks⢠and cat-ear headphones, and asking myself, ādid the Hacker Aesthetic go from Unfortunate Sweatshirts to Neon Catgirlgender Fantasy because of John Waters? Did he do this???ā
Iām sure this has been discussed at length already but covid finally got me and I have some Thoughtsā¢. And those thoughts, aside from the most obvious āaaaaah I canāt believe weāre still dealing with this 2 and a half years laterā, are that Iām really disappointed that the pandemic hasnāt caused a widespread cultural shift around how we look at illness in general (at least from what Iāve observed in my areaāI know masking when sick has been prevalent in many cultures for a long time and let me just say Iām jealous). I was really hoping weād see more sick people masking in public and staying home when possible regardless of what illness they have.
Iām not just talking about people who refuse to mask or get vaccinated at allāIām talking specifically about people who go out maskless when theyāre visibly sick and say āoh donāt worry, I took a test, itās not covid :)ā while coughing and sneezing everywhere. First of all, I donāt care if itās not covid, I donāt want whatever germs you do have. And second of all, a negative rapid test shouldnāt be taken as the end all be all when false negatives are so common.
Yesterday morning, I took a rapid test and despite having several of the hallmark covid symptoms, there wasnāt even a hint of a second line. But when I re-tested this morning, I didnāt even bother to set my 15-minute timer because that double line had shown up in deep red within 30 seconds. I couldāve just taken that first negative test, chalked up my cough and sore throat as my allergies acting up, and went on my merry way, unknowingly spreading the virus to dozens of people, including those for whom covid and other illnesses pose a much greater risk.
It makes me sad that many people who label themselves as ācovid cautiousā are cautious only about confirmed covid cases, when thatās only going to go so far. I donāt understand how we can have the tools to prevent the spread of germs right in front of us and then not use them. Itās like we learned nothing after all this time, and thatās so frustrating.
It gets me that the pandemic has not led to our institutions being more set up to deal with sickness. I've had a throat infection this week and the university has made it so hard for me to miss class. And it's like this is why I keep getting sick cause you idiots have created pressure on everyone with a minor illness to still come to class.
