my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government

this is getting really popular so i’d like to add the important caveat that your criticism of a work is no more unassailable than the work itself. just as one is entitled to be critical of something someone else is entitled to disagree with that criticism. i add this because some of you pretend to give a fuck about thoughtful analysis and then when someone points out flaws in your argument you declare that all criticisms are valid. this is untrue. the status of a hater is no more sacred than that of a liker. get off your high horse and engage in the thoughtful discussion you pretend to believe in or perish by my blade

also we have GOT to collectively come to terms with the fact that me or any other stranger online disliking or even making fun of something you like is not saying “no fun allowed” “no one can ever enjoy this” you have simply got to grow a spine and be able to like the shit you like. you don’t even have to defend it! like 90% of the media i really enjoy is divisive and half my friends actively hate it. i really don’t give a fuck though because i like it. you can write whatever you want! you’re allowed! even if it’s MY least favorite genre or style of writing and i have active distaste for it!

something ive been thinking about lately wrt to the "people learn what their IRL relationships should look like based on what they see in fiction, therefore creators are morally obligated to only write healthy relationships" argument is like. ok. let's set aside for a moment any arguments over whether that actually happens the way people claim it does. let's play in a space where there are, indeed, a massive number of people who are forming their ideas of what healthy relationships look like based purely off of fiction. i think then that the solution would still not be "fictional relationships must be wholly uncomplicated and unproblematic and healthy". i think it would be "we as a society need to do a better job of teaching young people what healthy relationships look like". like if you tell me that grand theft auto is causing car crashes because people are learning how to drive from it i am not going to say oh well then the guys who made that game are morally evil. i'm gonna say oh wow we need to make driver's ed way more accessible then. you know what i mean? i think the next time you get mad over an unhealthy fictional relationship you should step back and ask yourself if you're expecting grand theft auto to be a driver's ed simulator
