For those following along at home:
Donald “I never settle” McJonald (he settles all the time) settled the Trump University fraud lawsuits with a payment of $25 million and an additional $1 million to the state of New York (for being a fraud) (and violating a whole heckity ton of education laws).
Settlements are often understood as more or less an admission of guilt, but Donny J’s still defending his innocence bc apparently that’s what would be proven after the “years of litigation” he’s purportedly trying to avoid.

Okay ppl need to stop acting like the “abstinence only” crowd loves a-spec ppl tho.
I’m so over of the legalization of weed being framed through the lens of suburban white kids looking to avoid citations rather than the swarths of black and brown bodies cyclically caged, exploited and viciously rung through the prison industrial complex.

The fact that in Hamilton our cast looks like America looks like now, I think only enhances the immediacy of the story. It just makes sense from a storytelling perspective for us, but it does, for some people, have this political overtone to it, like “Oh my Gosh, this is what our country looks like now.” And it will strike joy into the hearts of some and panic into the hearts of others but there it is. It’s a reality.

I’ve just realized some more of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genius
At the end of “Alexander Hamilton” (the opening number), the characters go around and briefly describe their relationship to Hamilton. I’ve mentioned before that Laurens’s (Anthony Ramos’s)…
Oh, I’m happy you caught the “We fought with him” double meaning. That’s one you only get on repeated viewings. I gave myself a good pat on the back for that one.
Hamilton had few people to invite to the wedding. His brother, James, was still alive, probably on St. Thomas, but he didn’t come. Hamilton contacted his father, who was on Bequia in the Grenadines, but he didn’t show up either, possibly because of problems posed by wartime travel for British subjects. Before the wedding, Alexander told Eliza: “I wrote you, my dear, in one of my letters that I had written to our father, but had not heard of him since….I had pressed him to come to America after the peace. A gentleman going to the island where he is, will in a few days afford me a safe opportunity to write again. I shall again present him with his black-eyed daughter, and tell him how much her attention deserves his affection and will make the blessing of his gray hairs.” Whether from shame, illness, or poverty, James Hamilton never met Eliza, the Schuylers, or his grandchildren, despite Alexander’s sincere entreaties that he come to America. At noon on December 14, 1780, Alexander Hamilton, twenty-five, wed Elizabeth Schuyler, twenty-three, in the southeast parlor of the Schuyler mansion. The interior of the two-story brick residence was light and airy and had a magnificent curving staircase with beautifully carved balusters. During the ceremony, the parlor was likely radiant with sunshine reflected from the snow outside. The ceremony followed the Dutch custom of a small family wedding in the bride’s home. At the local Dutch Reformed Church, the clerk recorded simply: “Colonel Hamilton & Elisabeth [sic] Schuyler.” After the ceremony, the guests probably adjourned to the entrance hall, which was nearly fifty feet long and twenty feet wide and flanked by tall, graceful windows. Except for James McHenry, Hamilton’s friends on Washington’s staff were too busy with wartime duties to attend. For all the merriment and high spirits, few guests could have overlooked the mortifying contrast between the enormous Schuyler clan, with their Van Cortlandt and Van Rensselaer relatives, and the lonely groom, who didn’t have a single family member in attendance.

The real Eliza/Alexander wedding is too heartbreaking for so early in a musical. I decided to make it heartbreaking for different reasons.

Hamilton's Affairs of Honor
It’s no secret Hamilton was hypersensitive, and out of the Founders by far had the most challenges under his belt. He only ever saw the dueling field twice (once as Laurens’s second in his duel with Charles Lee, and then as the principal against Burr).
Here’s a list of the people he challenged and for what reason:
Reverend William Gordon (1779) - Accused of wanting to overthrow the government
Aedanus Burke (1790) - Accused of lying
John Francis Mercer (1792-93) -Accused of buying government debt at inflated prices to help speculators
James Nicholson (1795) - Accused of being corrupt and a coward
Republican Party (1795) - Bad day
Maturin Livingston (1795 and 1796) - Accepted above challenge
James Monroe (1797) - Accused of speculation and slander
John Adams (1800) - Accused of everything, but specifically of being a member of a British faction
Ebenezer Purdy/George Clinton (1804) - Accused of plotting to put a son of George III on an American throne in exchange for Canada
Aaron Burr (1804) - Accused of character defamation through libel. Only instance where Hamilton did not initiate the challenge.
The James Monroe challenge got really close, and you know who helped squash it? BURR.

May 24, 2015:
I’ve written a new musical entitled Hamilton; it’s opening on Broadway this summer. There are lots of characters in the show, but I want to talk about two of them in particular, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. On the surface, these men had a lot in common: They were both orphaned at a young age, though Burr grew up in wealth and privilege in New England, Hamilton in poverty in the Caribbean. Both prodigious students, revered commanders in the Revolutionary War, expert lawyers, respected politicians, innovative businessmen, until 1804 when one kills another in a duel. This duel is their most famous act, linking them together forever.
The engine of my new musical is the fact that Hamilton and Burr both hear that ticking clock of mortality at a very young age, and the way in which they choose to live in the FACE of that knowledge puts them in a collision course from the moment they meet. I’m going to sing a little bit, so if you made a bet that I’d be rapping during the Commencement address, your friend owes you money. Or points.
I was reading this part in Alexander Hamilton’s papers about financial aid he’d sent to his father James between 1796 and 1798.
So for 1796, he sent $300.00 and for 1798 $341.25, for a total of $641.25 to the old man.
I got curious about how much that would be in modern money. Going by this inflation calculator, roughly (and going by the value of the dollar in 2014):
In 1796: $1 = $17.32
In 1798: $1 = $18.60
Meaning he sent his father about $11,537.75.
I don’t know what James Hamilton did to earn his son’s undying loyalty, but I’m not sure it was worth over $11,500.00.
And then I thought, while I’m here, how much roughly did Hamilton’s adulterous sex scandal cost him, when he shelled out approximately $1,075.00 in 1792 to James and Maria Reynolds for blackmail:
