It's simply not true and equates something that some people get benefit from with it being a fundamental aspect of being human (and one that is missing it most people today). The most annoying part is when you try to push back on it and they respond by reframing mundane things such as making art or enjoying nature or participating in community as inherently ~spiritual~ experiences so they can say you only disagree because your concept of spirituality is too narrowminded and shaped by organized religion or some shit.

just kind of vagueing now but while i have my criticisms behind this discourse (if you actually want to understand why brazil's men national football teams has been bad there's probably a multitude of other reasons that are relevant to the conversation besides merely evangelicals) i think that regardless of how monolithically true it is specifically for football it's just generally relevant to mention how it induces a change in worldview that has been pretty bad. this isn't trying to make a dichotomy where catholics have a better worldview than evangelicals; i don't care and both suck; but the thing is that evangelical christianity really did grow through imported US churches that essentially foster neoliberal ideology through religion. during the "brazilian miracle" in the early 70s when these churches first started coming for real it was essentially to give steam to the movement of private entrepreneurship in the middle of this economic boom. one example is the widespread migration of southern brazilians to mato grosso and rondônia, which were "empty" (read: majority indigenous) lands. and it is no coincidence that many towns in these places are to this day some of the most evangelical in the country (ex espigão d'oeste with almost 50% evangelicals). this is also seen in southeastern pará where deforestation and mining rapidly grew and with them came evangelical churches proselitizing and defending that becoming rich was a god-given right and that trying to get rich was part of god's plans for you. this is also why places like canaã dos carajás have specifically religious-sounding names. the opposite is also true. in times of economic hardship these churches were there to specifically fuel the idea that such hardships were individual errors that needed to be corrected through a proactive entrepreneurial mindset. this is also why many poor people in favelas became accustomed to evangelical churches: they provided aid and a seemingly glorious, american dream-style path that could take people out of their poverty. as such what i mean is that while analyzing mentality and personal beliefs is not as relevant as analyzing direct material changes caused by religion i think that this push for neoliberal ideology embedded in religious motifs for personal transformations are relevant to mention in the wider struggle against neocolonialism and subservience to imperialism

something i find pretty comical is when people (primarily moderate socialists, non-ML communists and other vague groups of "leftists") say stuff like "everyone is a bit socialist on the inside!"
