what’s the worst piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
JF: well, I've probably given some bad advice over the years. It's hard not to--everyone is so different. But I try.
Very early I did got a demo to an A&R person at a record company, and gave them a call about it. I don't remember too much about the conversation but it wasn't very long. I do remember that at one point it went something like (A&R person:) "You know what these songs are missing, right?" (Me:) "Um... I...." (A&R person:) "There are no melodies."
I was a bit stumped by this, not that I thought our melodies were so earth-shaking, but in an era where many folks were moving directly away from melody completely I already felt we were kinda going in our own direction on that front. But the funny thing is a still think about their note.
For the record:
Listen to the Axolotl song. You will not regret it.
goo goo dolls if they were in dune: and i don’t want the worm to see me
Today in niche genres of joke that I can never get enough of and will probably still be secretly thinking about four years later

Democrat and Chronicle, 1993:
Democrat and Chronicle, 1995:
john flansburgh on tabloid reporting
they found the article he's talking about, by the way (Daily Mirror 1990-03-22):
what is it they put in the hardware store to make it smell so good
OK 👍 that is helps
I love when JF talks about the early days of the band like it was a secret double identity situation.
Trying to juggle school + social life + living paycheck to paycheck in 80s NYC while comically awful things happened to him regularly... okay, Peter Parker
and normally with these stories the punchline is that he was being paranoid and over-react-y but he literally DID get fired from his newspaper job when someone published a photo revealing his double life, because J. Jonah Jameson is real in real life

Same as it ever was ✨
the more you listen to it, the funnier it gets
Audio: dramatic piano. The husky screams along, vaguely keeping the rhythm but not the tune
That last ROO always gets me
AUDIO POR DIOSSSSSS!!!!
Beyond perfect 🤣👍
Dude’s got pipes
Damn he is BELTING it.
This is the “boys will be boys” we wanted all along.
Also, get them a contract.
I play this EVERY single time it crosses my dash. This is joy.

Hi John. I just watched the Q&A you did during the JoCo cruise. You said that you had bought a theremin. Have you learned to play it?
JF: like a lot of theremin OWNERS, I find it is almost impossible to become a theremin PLAYER. No frets! More worry!
