why are you acting like it’s wrong to support hamas…
i cannot believe i have to explain why you should not support a self professed terrorist group that palestinians have been actively protesting against for years.
israel gave 1.1 residents in northern gaza 24 hours to evacuate. evacuate where? is southern gaza supposed to suddenly take in 1.1 million people? and what if you can't evacuate? how do you evacuate an entire hospital? how do you evacuate icu patients? never mind that even if not for that, the hospital is going to run out of electricity in a few days. what happens then?
and what do you do when you run out of water? when you've conserved all you can, not showering and not boiling anything, but you're down to your last drop of water to drink? and there's none at the store in bottles to buy, and the whole time, your home might get bombed. what are you supposed to do?
the stories i've heard of what it's like in gaza right now remind me of eicha, the book of lamentations, which jews read every year on the day we mourn the destruction of jerusalem. the desperation and mourning. the siege. the despair.
this is gaza.
everyone north of the blue line is supposed to move south of it. in 24 hours. and this "warning" was given around 24 hours ago. but already earlier today, israel's ground invasion began.
what are gazans supposed to do?
i don't pretend to know the answers, but i know this isn't it.
Let history show that this tragedy and its continuing downward spiral are the fault of Benjamin Netanyahu and Likud. They did this when they got Yitzhak Rabin killed for the crime of signing the Oslo Accords to move towards a two state solution and Palestinian autonomy.
Happy Labor Day. Today I learned about probably the first strike to happen IN SPACE.
“We would never work 16 hours a day for 84 straight days on the ground, and we should not be expected to do it here in space.“
The day when three NASA astronauts staged a strike in space (Hiltzik, LA Times)

Kickstarting a book to end enshittification, because Amazon will not carry it
My next book is The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation: it’s a Big Tech disassembly manual that explains how to disenshittify the web and bring back the old good internet. The hardcover comes from Verso on Sept 5, but the audiobook comes from me — because Amazon refuses to sell my audio:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/the-internet-con-how-to-seize-the-means-of-computation
Amazon owns Audible, the monopoly audiobook platform that controls >90% of the audio market. They require mandatory DRM for every book sold, locking those books forever to Amazon’s monopoly platform. If you break up with Amazon, you have to throw away your entire audiobook library.
That’s a hell of a lot of leverage to hand to any company, let alone a rapacious monopoly that ran a program targeting small publishers called “Project Gazelle,” where execs were ordered to attack indie publishers “the way a cheetah would pursue a sickly gazelle”:

DRM ON FUCKING BOOKS???
The publishing industry 100% loves DRM on books. Like the publishers themselves will often insist upon it because they think it stops piracy.
FUCK DRM!
Also, fantastic to hear Cory Doctorow’s got another book out! 😁
FYI, the Kickstarter includes your choice of audiobook, ebook, and/or hardcover copy of the new book!
You can buy DRM-free ebooks from ebooks.com. I don’t know anything about their ethics or how big a cut they take (feel free to milkshake duck them for me), but I have bought books from them just to avoid supporting Amazon and ebook DRM.
And audiobooks purchased through Libro.fm are also DRM free and a portion of the sale supports indie bookstores.
You can get a monthly subscription on Libro.fm, paying $15/mo for ebook credits that never expire, and sometimes they have sales on top of that - I got all the Murderbot Diaries novellas for like $8 each.
Libro.fm takes their anti-DRM so seriously that they won’t sell books where the publisher requires it. They just put a notice on the page that the publisher’s policies conflict with their own.
They are 👍❤️
does anyone know if i can like block sites from appearing in my google images searches??? i keep getting those awful ai generated things with a hand coming out of a man's neck and just straight up not what i was looking for, because this was in a search for "curly hair in medieval paintings". it happens every time i search for anything vaguely art-reference-like and it's so fucking annoying and it clutters my search results so much. i don't wanna add specific commands to the query every time too, what i need is like a browser extension or something
Download uBlacklist for Firefox. Blocks sites you specify from appearing in Google search results
okay i found one! it works! everyone come get your blacklist 👍👍👍
if they rebooted austin powers it would either be the most tone deaf unfunny incredibly offensive movie in years OR they'd do it right and really keep with the times in being very self aware and it would be one of the best films in decades. austin powers would be a massive support of trans rights because trans women means more women for him to shag
oh your pronouns are she/they? well baby lemme she/them titties shagadelic
austin powers discovers bisexuality and it blows his fucking mind
sub plots of the movie include him learning who he thought was a woman he previously had relations with is a trans man now and powers teaching him the ways of picking up women & powers learning he has a daughter from one of his many escapades who's accidentally followed in his footsteps to also become a spy. the two have to team up and powers struggles being a father after being absent for so long, but eventually it's revealed his daughter is a lesbian and they bond over their mutual love of shagging women
the only joke made in regards to the trans man's gender is powers going "you're a man now? now that's groovy, honey! sorry, is it still okay to call you honey?"
the trans man is revealed from powers learning about bisexuality and lamenting that he could've also been shagging men this entire time, only for the trans man to be like "well...."
instead of the usual awful transphobic joke of being disgusted powers is instead ecstatic that he's already had relations with another man and that the pressure is already off for future encounters
there's a mid credits scene of him celebrating his first planned encounter with a man and him making a comment about how he's finally been with "both" genders, where he's then informed of non-binary people existing and how there's a whole world of genders for him to explore and it freeze frames on his shocked but absolutely delighted face
ok NOW we can all freak out marvel vfx workers voted to unionize thank god
article here
Guys.
Y’all.
I…
I just. I just… i have discovered something. And I have laughed too much. I have laughed every time I have tried to explain it to someone. I cannot get through this.
Look. Okay.
There are two things you need to know, here.
First: There’s a style of Greek pottery that was popular during the Hellenic period, for which most of the surviving examples are from southern Italy. We call them ‘fish plates’ because, well, they’re plates, and they’re decorated with fish (and other marine life).
Like this one, currently in the Met:
Or this one, currently in the Cleveland Museum of Art:
They’re very cool. We’re not 100% sure what they were for, because most of the surviving ones were found as grave goods, but that’s a different post.
The second thing you need to know is that when we (Classics/archaeology/whatever as a discipline) have a collection of artefacts, like vases, sculptures, paintings, etc. and we do not know the name of the artist, but we’re pretty sure one artist made X, Y and Z artefacts, we come up with a name for that artist. There are a whole bunch of things that could be the source for the name, e.g. where we found most of their work (The Dipylon Master) or the potter with whom they worked (the Amasis Painter), a favourite theme (The Athena Painter), the Museum that ended up with the most famous thing they did (The Berlin Painter) or a notable aspect of their style. Like, say, The Eyebrow Painter.
Guess what kind of pottery the Eyebrow Painter made?

places i should be allowed to poke around in because i am curious by nature
container ships in the middle of the ocean
the large hadron collider
any salt mine
museum storage rooms
svalbard seed vault
I can say from experience, museum storage vaults are fun. See this hallway? ALL of those cabinets are moths and butterfly collections.
However, might I also interest you in archives and special collections?
(All of these are from places I have worked)
We’ve got miles of documents, cursed objects, media, friends????
Scarecrow level=1000
lets get sillay
babushka off her shits lets gooooo
i’ve been thinking about this video nonstop since the first time i saw it
the jaunty walk perfectly in time with the music. the tip of the hat the unaware or uncaring bystanders. the shaky camera with random zooming. the fact that this is seemingly happening in a park. this is peak media i can’t get over it
I think that 2023 is a good time for many of us, and allies in particular, to practice again the dying art of minding our own fucking business when it comes to the identities and lives of other people.
You see someone from one of your classes in a public place with a different gender presentation/expression than they typically have? Mind your own business.
You discover that one of your coworkers is in a same gender relationship, but they aren't out at work? Not your place to share that information in the workplace.
You notice that your neighbor in a red state takes a road trip across state lines with their transgender child every 3-6 months? No you fucking didn't.
You overhear students in your classroom using a different name and different pronouns for one student than you are used to using? If you live in a state hostile to trans rights, pretend that you don't know anything about this and report nothing.
You suspect that an acquaintance of yours might be gay, but they deny it when asked directly? Leave them the fuck alone.
One of your friends refuses to publicly label their sexuality? Good for them, you aren't entitled to that information anyway.
Your sibling comes out to you as questioning, but isn't comfortable sharing that with your parents yet? Keep your fucking mouth shut.
Don't out people; coming out is a personal choice not a moral obligation. Don't demand personal information about other people's sexuality or sex lives. You aren't entitled to information about anyone's gender identity, assigned gender at birth, or transition.
Bring back privacy, allow people to have control over the information that is shared about them publicly; it might save their job, their housing, their parental rights and their child's safety, or even save lives.

bein able to reblog posts of deleted tumblr accounts is absolutely the best feature here
its feels like dragging a corpse around through a bacchanal along with its legacy
Tumblr 896 CE, colorised
somehow instead of saying "as a treat", I've started using the phrase "for morale", as if my body is a ship and its crew, and I (the captain) have to keep us in high spirits, lest we suffer a mutiny in the coming days.
and so I will eat this small block of fancy cheese, for morale. I will take a break and drink some tea, for morale. I will pick up that weird bug, for morale.
I'm not sure if it helps, but it does entertain me
