I think that Derek probably helped his sisters (and cousins) with their hair a lot when he was young. Being the only boy at his Auntie's and with his mama working so often he probably got familiar with how to work with hair and got good at braiding for them. He can probably do it in his sleep! Of course when he moved away he didn't need the skill as much anymore, but I think he was always helping his girlfriends and teammates with long hair. We know Derek is always using his hands, and finds it calming to fidget and toy with things and I think that applies a lot to Spencer's hair. I mean we see him flip it and ruffle it and mess with it in the show!!! I think Spencer's pretty bad at taking care of his hair and he only gets it cut when he's annoyed enough by it. So if Derek keeps braiding it and tying it up for him he just keeps it long. I can see him braiding and unbraiding Spencer's hair over and over as a means of self soothing. he probably cries really hard when Spencer gets a haircut.

Spencer is probably not so familiar with this. He had longer hair at times childhood but that was likely because his mother couldn't cut it, rather than a choice. I think that when spencer realizes how good it feels for someone to touch his hair and head he wants it all the time. He probably falls asleep the first time Derek washes his hair for him. This is my greedy self indulgent brain talking but I want Spencer to find himself pretty after Derek does his hair and be really shocked by that.

(but it's spencer whenever derek announced his engagement)
