legs really emphasized this on his stream about the situation yesterday, but i thought i'd reiterate here because it is an incredibly important sentiment that everyone should keep in mind when engaging with fandom in any way: do not idolize content creators.

i've been a part of fandom for a long time. and inevitably, when an actor, celebrity, creator, etc is exposed as a bad person, the responses from fans are always somewhere along the lines of "i can't believe this! i trusted them, how could they betray me?" that's the thing. they didn't betray you, at least, not personally. it's not your fault for being a fan of a bad person, obviously. but you have to understand, they are not your friends. you do not know them. as legs put it, you know a very small, carefully curated slice of their life. that's it.

something else legs said that really stuck with me (i'm paraphrasing here) is that "you need to be your own role model." you can be a fan, you can connect with them, you can make art about them, but they cannot be the person you look up to, who you base your worldview and morality off of. it has to be you.

everyone's already said it, but please take care of yourself. don't doomscroll, don't blame yourself for liking them right up until they were exposed. and DO NOT pressure anyone involved into giving a statement. i hope this resonates with people, thanks for listening.

One more bit of food for thought, and then I'll try to drop this whole AvidMC subject.

Vampires SMP was a work of art. I'm hanging out in this community and tracking MCYT because of it. The emergent themes about being a monster layer on top of each other in a way that just shouldn't be possible in improv. I'm not going to get over it anytime soon.

It's also, by design, a massive, interlocking collaboration. You CAN'T pull AvidMC's character out without wrecking major storylines by half the creators -- most of whom, and I think this is really important -- were AvidMC's targets and victims in this ordeal.

The story matters, and those creators really matter. These performances are a highlight of a lot of their careers. All this flailing to get away from AvidMC and canceling/restructuring of fan works that involve him is also striking against all these other creators who AvidMC already hurt.

Think about that when you decide how to deal with these ugly revelations. He is one thread in a tapestry -- it can't exist without him, but it's beautiful, and there are so many more threads that are more important than he was that shouldn't be cut.

What the fuck happens that changes these stats to such a massive degree?

1) schizophrenia hardly ever causes people to be violent so schizophrenic people aren’t more likely to be violent than anyone else

2) schizophrenic people’s autonomy is often taken away from them because of their schizophrenia. because the authorities and mental healthcare providers often automatically assume schizophrenic people to be violent, they’re more likely to immediately react to schizophrenic people's symptoms with violence, without even knowing for sure said schizophrenic person was going to be violent. all of this causes schizophrenic people to be more likely of being victims of violence and abuse. schizophrenic people also have a harder time getting out of abusive households because of the risk of their autonomy being taken away. if a schizophrenic person’s relative or partner is abusive, often the schizophrenic person has no way out of the situation, both because our disconnect from reality can result in us being easier to manipulate, and because the system is built in a way that it takes away our autonomy because of our condition.

Police take fiscal oxygen out of the room, away from actual social support programs. The money spent on policing could go to housing, nutritional services, healthcare, civil rights, building inspections, labor rights enforcement, street maintenance, public transportation. But it goes to paying guys to sit around idling Ford Explorers all day and hitting poor people with sticks.
