Been reading the Lord Peter Wimsey novels and did not fully anticipate how strong my reaction to Peter would be. It’s like he was intentionally engineered to hit every trait that activates the blorbo center of my brain.

What do you MEAN he was traumatized in the Great War by being buried alive and sending men to their deaths and continues to be haunted by it to this day? That he uses humor, prattle, and literary references to create an air of silly assedness to both obfuscate his intelligence and protect himself? That he is simultaneously vain and self-disparaging? That behind all of it he’s just a twitching pile of frayed nerves, duty, genuine love for humanity, and longing?

in re conversations that thankfully seem to be occurring only on other sites, i actually love when the fiction i'm reading uses words i don't know and have to look up! admittedly it does not happen often, because i am an adult who read a lot as a kid and has since done what is frankly maybe a bit too much education, but please do casually drop words like phalanstery in your book so i have to look it up and then find myself reading wikipedia pages about 19th century socialist utopianism! please do throw around rare plants and birds whose names i don't know because they're not native/common anywhere i've ever been! then i get to look at pictures of things that i've never seen before!

I hope at the end of this book Planchet gets to retire to… I don't know a big castle or something and live out the rest of his days in peace.

#I was enjoying it from the start #but not… hooked as such #interested/entertained by some of the characters (Silver and Eleanor)#and sort of curious in knowing what is going on with Mrs Barlow #(what IS going on with Mrs Barlow)#THEN #(spoilers incoming)#Flint killed Gates and for some reason it was at that moment my brain went ‘OH I care so much about all of these characters’#now I fear I'm invested for good #black sails

Porthos: Yeah I would never duel but I would hit someone with a bench.

Aramis: I'm going to be a monk, therefore would not even CONSIDER duels but I did draw my sword and someone impaled himself on it.

he doesn’t compliment her dancing and she spends like 5 minutes having a silent crashout until she finally snaps and is like I KNOW I SUCK AT DANCING. and he goes ?? and then he goes !! and THEN he goes “i would dance the sun and moon into the sea with you. i have waited a thousand years to see you dance in that frock” and she tells him he’s an idiot. a+ behavior harriet clearly zero feelings here
