NEW: Help people discover Pressfolios, earn extra storage space.
Need more storage space for your Pressfolio? Youâre in luck. Weâve just released a simple new feature that earns you extra space just for helping people discover Pressfolios.
Hereâs how it works:
Right this very moment, sitting atop your account dashboard is a brand new custom invite link.
Copy your invite link and share it with friends, colleagues and acquaintances via email, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn - you name it.
Every time someone clicks your invite link and signs up for a free Pressfolio, you both get +5 stories worth of extra space added to your Pressfolios.
The best part: Thereâs no limit to the number of stories you can earn. If 100 people discover Pressfolios thanks to your special invite link, thatâs +500 stories added to your account in no time flat.
"But I thought you already did that.. right?"
Well.. Yes, and no. It's true we've always had a referral system to help you to earn bonus space by inviting friends. In the old system, however, you could only send invites by email.Â
With the new system, we give you direct access to your user-specific invite code/link so that you can share it with your contacts wherever, whenever and however you see best fit.

Salt Lake Tribune layoffs: Pressfolios Pro available free to all those affected
Today we received word that a round of layoffs have taken place at The Salt Lake Tribune. In light of this unfortunate news, we have decided to make Pressfolios available to all those affected for free.
Pressfolios helps journalists backup their published articles and build a better online portfolio - http://pressfolios.com.
If you are a former Tribune staffer headed onto the open market, you can send us an email at [email protected] and we will get you set up with access to a full-featured Pressfolios Pro account with unlimited storage at no cost for three months.
FAQ: I already have portfolios on other sites (and theyâre free). Why should I use Pressfolios?
Pressfolios is the easiest way for journalists and writers to backup their published stories and build a better online portfolio. Designed for todayâs digital journalist, Pressfolios functions as a personal repository, a cloud backup service and a website builder all wrapped into one.
While there are many tools out there for building websites and online portfolios, Pressfolios is winning over the journalism community because our platform is designed to meet the specific needs of those plying the journalistic trade.
Story Backup
Every time you add a story to Pressfolios, we automatically create a full backup for you and keep it safely stored on our servers in case any of your links ever expire.
Do any other website builders like WordPress or Wix, provide backups for every story? Nope. How about other journalism-specific services like MuckRack or Contently? Negative.
Intelligent Archive
Pressfolios doesnât just help you build a nice website to showcase your professional identity and published work, it gives you an intelligent personal repository for collecting all of your articles into one central location so you can keep track of those stories over time.
Need to find the name of a source from a story you wrote two years ago? If it's in your Pressfolio, no problem: Just login and search any terms you can remember from the story and we'll pull it up for you in no time flat.
Automation
One of the biggest challenges with building a portfolio is keeping it updated with your most recent work. With Pressfolios Pro, you donât need to worry about months-old stories appearing front and center on your website - just set up our RSS auto-import tool and every time new stories are published, weâll automatically pull them into your Pressfolio for you.
Use Your Custom Domain
Most of the mass market website builders allow for custom domains, but other platforms âspecializing in journalist portfoliosâ - not so much.
Pressfolios Web Clipper
Increased automation is a key focus area here at Pressfolios. In addition to the RSS bulk importer and auto-importing tools, weâve also built a web clipper. Whatâs a web clipper? Itâs a little button that sits in your Chrome internet browser and when you click it while reading an article - voila! - the article is sent to your Pressfolio.
Our Roadmap
Choosing a portfolio platform is a long term decision. This means itâs important to consider the development roadmaps of the services youâre considering. For mass market services like Wordpress and Wix, itâs more of the same - continue building tools to help anyone in the world create webpages on the internet. In other words, we can pretty much guarantee these services will provide you with the exact same amount of value tomorrow as they do today.
Pressfolios, on the other hand, is here to help you take control of your published work and professional identity as a journalist. Weâre continuously developing new tools to make it faster and easier to build, manage and backup your portfolio.
What does our development roadmap look like? Overall, weâre working to increase automation and customization. Here are a few features we have in the works:
New Pressfolio layouts, designs and customization options
Customizable HTML tags to give you more control over your SEO
An expanded Pressfolios Web Clipper
New bulk uploading and import-automation tools
An analytics dashboard for mining data about your Pressfolio & stories
Improvements to our story management dashboard for better labeling, filtering and sorting
And on a final note: To date, the ideas behind some of the most popular features in Pressfolios have come from our community of users. That said, as you get started with our platform, please keep in touch. If you have any ideas on how we can make Pressfolios better - weâre all ears at [email protected]
AOL Patch layoffs: Pressfolios Pro available free to all editors and reporters
We have received word that AOL will soon close up to 300 Patch sites, with upwards of 500 layoffs expected Friday. In light of this unfortunate news, we have decided to make Pressfolios Pro available to all those affected for free.
Pressfolios helps journalists backup their published articles and build a better online portfolio - http://pressfolios.com. For Patch editors and staffers, this means you can save a complete archive of your work before it is taken offline.
If you are a Patch.com editor or staffer headed onto the open market, send us an email at [email protected] and we will get you set up with access to a full-featured Pressfolios Pro account with unlimited storage at no cost for three months.

So youâve created a Pressfolio to take control of your published work and professional identity, and now you want to make sure everything is optimized to keep your best foot forward when Googled. Great! Letâs talk about best practices.
First off, letâs clear something up: Despite what some may say, there is no deep dark secret to SEO - at least not anymore. The search algorithms employed by Google, Bing and Yahoo! are so sophisticated that trying to game them with cheap tricks simply doesnât work - not even a little.Â
Thatâs not to say you canât help search engines do their job (indexing your Pressfolio amongst the internet of things) itâs just that you canât cheat your way to the top of search results.Â
With that said, hereâs what you can do to optimize your Pressfolio for search engines:
1. Use your full name for the URL
Sounds simple, but itâs often overlooked. Assuming you want people searching your name to find your Pressfolio, setting your Pressfolios URL to those same keywords - ie. http://johndoe.pressfolios.com - is the most basic action you can take to ensure search engines index your site properly.Â
2. Fill out your entire profile
It goes without saying that search engines are intelligent nowadays. Part of what makes them so effective at delivering relevant results to search queries is their ability to understand context.
3. Provide inbound links to your Pressfolio
One of the challenges faced by search engines when indexing websites is determining whether a particular website is important, legitimate and worth delivering in their search results. There are a number of contributing factors here, but traffic and inbound links are two of the most heavily weighted.Â
Adding links to your Pressfolio from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Tumblr, Wordpress - as many external web properties you can - works as a sort of verification mechanism for search engines and improves your search rankings.Â
4. Add stories
While outbound links donât provide search engines with as much context as inbound links to your Pressfolio do, they still help. The more stories you add, the more connections search engines can draw, and the more relevant your site becomes.Â
Likewise, keep your Pressfolio updated with new stories as often as possible. This sends a signal that your site is actively maintained and contains timely, relevant information, which in turn improves your ranking.Â
With Pressfolios Pro, you can set your site to automatically update with new stories as they publish to RSS feeds. This helps you maintain an active presence and increases your Pressfolioâs search rankings.Â
In summary: While thereâs no way to cheat your way to the top of search engine rankings, you can optimize your Pressfolio to help Google, Bing, Yahoo! and the like do their job and properly index your site.
Use your real, full name in the URL
Fill out your entire page to provide context as to which John or Jane Doe you are
Add inbound links to your Pressfolio from your social profiles and other sites to verify your identity
Fill up your Pressfolio and keep it updated
Follow these best practices and the search engines will return the favor.Â

New RSS Integrations: Bulk Story Upload and Automatic Importing
Pressfolios provides an easy way to keep track of your published stories and backup your work, all from one central location that you have full control over. With todayâs release of Pressfolios Pro, weâre ratcheting up automation with new RSS integrations for bulk story uploading and auto-importing.
Hereâs how the new features work:
RSS Feed Follower
Set Pressfolios to follow your RSS feed/s and automatically import stories right as they publish:
Step 1: Log into your account dashboard and click the âFollow RSS Feedsâ button
Step 2: Enter your RSS feed link/s and click âAdd Feedâ
Volia! From here on out, every time an article is published to one of your RSS feeds, weâll immediately add it to your Pressfolio for you. If you write for more than one publication and have multiple RSS feeds, no problem - youâre a Pro user - add as many RSS feeds as you like!
Bulk Story Uploader
Adding new articles without lifting a finger is great, but what about stories written before you discovered Pressfolios?
Fear not, Pro user: Weâve got you covered. With our new RSS integration, you can capture your past stories too. Likewise, if your RSS feed has other stories mixed in with it, the Bulk Story Uploader lets you pick and choose the right ones to import.
Step 1: Log into your account dashboard and click the âBulk Upload with RSSâ button
Step 2: Enter the link to your RSS feed and click the âGo Get My Storiesâ button
As soon as you click the âGo Get My Storiesâ button, we dispatch runners to search out all previous articles associated with your feed. This process usually takes less than 30 seconds and once itâs complete, you can add stories by going down the list and simply clicking the âAdd to Pressfolioâ button next to each one.
*The number of past stories weâre able to populate via our new RSS bulk uploading feature depends entirely on the settings of your publisherâs feed/s. Most publishers keep a long archive of stories associated with their feeds, however, some do not. Since the content is controlled by the publisher, we cannot guarantee how far back into the archives your feed will go.  Â
Story Ordering
To set the order in which new stories appear on your Pressfolio as theyâre automatically imported, click the âArrange Storiesâ button on your dashboard.
From here you can set your Pressfolio to automatically place newly added stories either at the top or the bottom of your Pressfolio.Â
If you have any questions about how our new RSS integrations work, weâre here to help at [email protected].

Pressfolios Chrome Extension - Add Stories to Your Pressfolio On The Fly
In older versions of Pressfolios, adding stories to your site meant navigating to http://pressfolios.com, logging into your account, then copying and pasting links individually.Â
With our new Chrome Extension, you can now add stories directly to your Pressfolio right from inside your browser.Â
Hereâs how the newly released Pressfolios Chrome Extension works and how to set it up:
Step 1: Browsing in Google Chrome, log into your Pressfolios account, click the âAccountâ tab on your dashboard and scroll down.Â
If you donât already have Google Chrome installed, hereâs a link: http://google.com/chrome. We highly recommend it for browsing the web.
Step 2: Install the Pressfolios Chrome Extension
Click here for the Pressfolios in the Chrome Web StoreÂ
Success! You can now clip articles and send them to your Pressfolios account simply by viewing a story with Google Chrome and clicking the
P
icon to the right of your address bar.Â
Step 3: Navigate to one of your articles using Google Chrome
For this example, we will be using a story written by Karen Fratti of 10,000 Words about the Pressfolios relaunch this past March.Â
Step 4: Click the "P+" icon now located on your bookmarks bar
**Step 5: The article is clipped and sent to your Pressfolio. **
And just like that, your story is saved. As always, every time you add a story to your Pressfolios account, we automatically create and store full-text backups for you.Â
Step 6 (optional): View the new story on your Pressfolio dashboard
Step 7 (bonus): To set the order in which new stories appear on your Pressfolio, click the âArrange Storiesâ button on your dashboard.Â

Adding stories to your Pressfolio from your account dashboard
Bulk story uploading and auto-importing with the new Pressfolios RSS integration
Now that youâve upgraded to Pressfolios Pro, you have free reign to add as many stories to your Pressfolio as humanly possible. Here are some tips for keeping track of your work as your personal repository expands:Â
Use the RSS Bulk Uploader and Auto-Importing features
As a Pressfolios Pro user, you have unlimited storage space. Why not set your account to automatically import your stories right as they publish? Hereâs how >>Â
Make use of Section labels
Adding Section labels to stories makes them easier to manage. This becomes increasingly useful as you accumulate more and more stories in your Pressfolio. Hereâs our guide to using Section Labels >>
Add story-published dates if none are provided
When you add a story to your Pressfolio, we automatically grab as much information about the link provided as your publisher allows. Publish dates can be difficult to capture at times, as many publishers format this metadata in different ways. That said, as stories are added to your Pressfolio, add the date if it hasnât already been generated.
Sort your Stories Table by clicking the column headers
Hereâs a quick trick: On your Stories Dashboard, you can click the table headers to rearrange the order in which your articles are displayed. While not a permanent rearrangement of the stories table, it can help with locating articles on the fly.Â
Use the search bar
The search bar located on your Stories Dashboard allows you to query all of your stories and all of the content within them. Need to find the name of source from story you wrote two years ago? No problem. Weâve built the Pressfolios so that you can filter, sort and search through your entire body of work without breaking a sweat.Â

Step 1: Log into your Pressfolios Stories Dashboard and click âUpload Manuallyâ
Step 2: Click the âChoose a fileâ button and select the PDF clipping from your computer.
Step 3: Add in key story information in the fields provided, then click âCreate Storyâ
*Weâre working on a handy little tool that will extract this information for you automatically. We hope to have it online soon. Â
Step 4: Your PDF clipping will now appear on your stories table. Click anywhere on the table row to edit your new storyâs details.Â
Step 5: Associate your new story with relevant Section Labels.Â
To create a new Section, type in the label of your choosing and click âCreate Sectionâ
Your story will automatically be associated with the newly created Section Label
To remove the Section Label, simply click on it again. Youâll notice the Label now appears under âAvailable Sections.â (More on Section Labels here >>)
Step 6: Add an image to your new PDF clipping.
To add an image, click the âChoose an Imageâ button
Next, click the âSelect a Different Imageâ button
From here you can associate a photo with your story by uploading an image file from your computer, adding an image via URL or with other services. (More guidance on selecting images here >>)
Have an entire folder full of PDF clippings on your desktop? With a Pressfolios Pro account, you can upload every last one and we'll keep 'em safely stored in the cloud for you. Go Pro >>
As a Pressfolios Pro user, every time a story is added to your Pressfolio, we automatically backup two full-text versions of the article for you. One is a screenshot-style PDF of the complete webpage/s; the other is a text-based, Instapaper/Pocket-style backup (also in PDF format).
Hereâs how they both appear:
Screenshot-style Backup (Pro Feature)
From your account dashboard:
Once downloaded:
*Image cropped to fit within this post
For this version of your story backup, we clip a full screenshot-styled PDF of the article with all page elements included. If your article runs across multiple pages, fear not: Weâve designed our system to capture the additional pages as well and compile the entire story into a clean PDF for you, as shown above.Â
Instapaper-style Backup
From your account dashboard:
Once downloaded:
*Image cropped to fit within this post
As youâve likely noticed above, for Instapaper-style backups, we strip out all of the ancillary page elements from the published articleâs webpage and provide you with a clean, text-based clipping. As we continue to expand Pressfolios, we will be working to improve the layout and visual design of these backups.Â
Thousands of articles quietly head to the deadpool every day. With Pressfolios, weâre working to ensure that journalists never need to worry about this again. We have several processes in place to ensure weâre capture the best possible backups of your articles. However, on the off chance something is amiss, please contact us at [email protected].
