The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.Β
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, youβll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.
Past notes will stay on the original post β we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out β stay tuned!

the new content filters and the flagging system require every reblogger to appeal independently from the poster.
What is happening?
With the latest tumblr content filter updates, every reblog is flagged independently from the original post without the OP knowing. This means that if your post is reblogged by someone and that reblog is flagged, you won't know. The note count will go up, but the note is hidden: you can't see it on the rebloggers blog or any other reblogs branching from the flagged post.
What should I do?
Every reblogger needs to appeal for their own reblogs. Thankfully the review time on Tumblr's side has been fast, usually in a couple of hours they restore the post. If you can notify the OP, grand. If you have time, leave a support ticket, choose feedback and tell them why you think this is a bad model.
Why and how should I do it?
We all know the latest and contested change about the note counts that was thankfully rolled back, but its ramifications are still in use. Tumblr now considers every reblog a post in its own right, as you can see from the new banners for the same post as above:
The turn this website has taken regarding the ownership of posts is at best discouraging and at worst a massive disrespect done to all the artists, creators, gifmakers, fic writers and meta writers out there, making fandom fun and alive. If artists, writers and gifmakers don't get autonomy over their own art being shared on this website, how is a reblog different from a repost, something tumblr actively discourages from doing? How can the OP appeal for a post if they don't even know it's flagged? Why are we taking away ownership of the art from the artist, the human behind it?
How do I appeal?
Tumblr has this very useful feature, both on the website and on the mobile app:
You can find all the flagged posts on your blog either by going to the relevant blog>right hand menu, below Posts, Followers, Activity>Review flagged posts on the website OR by going to Settings>Review flagged posts on the mobile
Then you click on Appeal, and write a very short reason why, describing the post. You can even write this:
This post has nothing that is against the User Guidelines.
A door is one of the things that makes a building unlike any other structure. All the doors in buildings are intended for human use, no matter which species actually enter and exit. We want to keep encouraging cross-species interactions, and give the smallest members of our communities the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to see, smell, and hear the mice in your home, and they will be able to see, smell, and hear you in return. Each mouse will have its own door, instead of one large door intended to accommodate all visitors. And yes, you'll be able to welcome multiple mice through a single door.
If a door falls into disuse due to illness, injury, or death, another mouse will be placed into your home. You won't lose mice just because they die.
Past mice will stay in your home-- including corpses. Removing all of those would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out - stay tuned!
go to the google play store. click on your profile picture in the top right corner. click "manage apps and device" and then at the top of the screen, go to the Manage tab. select the tumblr app, and click the three dots in the top right corner. there will be a check box for "enable auto update" and you want to un-check it.
I wish I had taken a screenshot of when I reblogged the @tumblr @staff post announcing this new incredibly disrespectful feature, because this new feature became active within the past hour.
The announcement post, at the time I reblogged it, had around
2k comments
24k reblogs
13k likes
When I came back to Tumblr a little while later, the announcement post's notes had dropped significantly:
While my reblog of that post, now has its own notes AND comment section, completely separate from the OG post:
This means that the new feature is active at this very moment and that this is how it works. And it sucks.
This new reblog system GUTS original posts. Interactions and engagements can no longer be properly tracked. If an original post breaches containment, it REALLY breaches containment. Unless you feverishly check every reblog of a reblog of a reblog of a reblog manually, you won't know how your post is received.
This especially hurts creatives, who rely on engagement and numbers for the art, photos, videos, whatever else they post. They NEED to be a part of this, Tumblr, you can't bar the original poster from their own post's growth. It's disrespectful. It makes no sense.
If you disagree with Tumblr's decision to ruin creatives' post engagements and reason to post on this site, reblog the original post (linked far above), comment on it. Don't threaten, but be clear about why you disagree. Also send them your feedback through their support. Be loud about this.
Edit:
@changes blog <- Only comment on and/or reblog Changes's reblogs about this new feature! The engineers won't otherwise see or read what you have to say.
Edit #2: this is a gradual update and rollout; if you don't see the updated reblog chain notes system yet, you eventually might within the next few days. You can read Tumblr's response to the outrage here.
EDIT #3 (final edit hopefully!): Tumblr got overwhelmed by the massive negative feedback and decided to roll back the new shitty feature. You can read about it here!

in case you want to know how bad the new tumblr update is. look at the notes. these are from the same post. screenshotted at the same time. the first one is a screenshot from tumblr app where the new update hasnβt been implemented yet. the second one is a screenshot from web browser where the new update has already been implemented.
here let me make it clearer.
app ππ»
browser ππ»
again. same post. screenshotted at the same time.
basically, op will only get notes if people like or reblog directly from them. if people like or reblog the original post they made from other peopleβs reblogs β and if those reblogs have comments or tags left by the rebloggers β op will not get any notes or credits. because apparently when people reblog the original posts you made and add their own tags or comments in those reblogs, it now counts as new posts and these βnew postsβ belongs to the reposters. not you as the op.
imagine being an artist on tumblr and getting the least notes on your own art while your reposters get hundreds or thousands of notes from your hard works, because they reblog the art you spent weeks or months making and add βvery cool op ππ»β as a comment or a tag.
but not only will you not receive those notes, you as the op cannot see what comments people leave on your own original posts that you created either, unless itβs a direct reblog from you.
not to mention the harassment against op this new update will undoubtedly unfortunately allow.
@tumblr @staff @changes @support with all due respect, this new update is both terrible and harmful
WE'VE WON A BATTLE, BUT NOT THE WAR! tumblr has announced that they have listened to the feedback and are reversing the notes rollout. this is great news, but we also need to keep an eye out for future updates as they still believe the reblog feature needs a rework.
re tumblr's notes rollout!!
just got this email from support:
PLEASE PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT ON THE POST THROUGH THIS LINK!! it links directly to @changes reblog of the original post so hopefully they'll hear us out!!
if you need a template feel free to copy/paste this or any other alternative circulating on tumblr! (and be respectful please, otherwise they won't listen to us).
Please stop the new notes rollout. It's gonna kill fandoms. Original creators and artists will stop posting if we don't get the credit we deserve and instead goes to rebloggers. There is a reason why we are here and not on Twitter. We are already struggling to reach people and this is just gonna make it worse. Fandoms are already starving for engagement and this rollout will drown smaller accounts. This will also disproportionately affect minority groups, especially BIPOC and members of the LGBTQQIP2SAA community, as this will make it more difficult for them to see harassment towards them on a different reblog chain and block/report them.
I urge you to reconsider.
also please still submit feedback through their online support form! the more ways we can bother them, the better. to submit a ticket, go here and click the "contact support" button on the top right corner on desktop. then select the feedback option from the dropdown menu and fill in the form. you'll get an automated email like the one above. still, reply to that email and ask for a human to review your feedback. a response template for this:
I would like for an actual human being to review and reply to my feedback because with the new notes rollout, @\changes won't be able to see my comment properly and will get lost and unacknowledged. Thank you in advance.
(more info under the cut!)
there have been reports of the comments section in the post being restricted. this seems to be a bug that comes and goes, so keep trying and leave your feedback through the link above.
also, if your phone has automatic app updates, disable those in your phone settings if the rollout hasn't reached your device yet, so your tumblr app won't have this update. this won't work on desktop though.
there are talks about a blackout happening between the 19th (or 20th) and 21st of march.
if you pay tumblr premium, please cancel your subscription, stating the new notes rollout is the reason why and that you won't reconsider rejoining until this update has been rolled back.
if you don't have an ad blocker installed on your desktop browser, i highly recommend you do to limit revenue as a protest.
and REMEMBER, complaining just once won't do much. we need to constantly remind them that we oppose this rollout for as long as it takes.
