bae joohyun (irene). cis female. she/her. presenting princess chaeyeon, twenty-eight-year-old firebender and third in line to the throne. alluring yet cunning, they find themself apprehensive of fire lord chaesan’s reign. will this be their salvation or their undoing?
hi everyone! i’m rie (21+, she/her) and i’ll be writing for princess chaeyeon, dragon of the south. an active chameleon well versed in thinking three steps ahead and speaking in tongues. rumor has it that she’s quite ruthless, despite her graceful mannerisms and petite stature. this is a new muse, so everything is a wip and it’s been an embarrassingly long time since i’ve joined a group, let alone rped a canon character tied to a rp’s storyline (there’s a first time for everything & i’m loving it!). please bear with me if characterization fluctuates a bit as i begin to write and develop her alongside the core plot! below is hopefully a comprehensive summary of chaeyeon’s background and personality + some connections to get the ball rolling 😄
please like this post if you wish to plot & i’ll message you! 💖
background / personality.
dragon of the south, third in line to the throne — born a sickly child and considered a disgrace in the eyes of her royal consort mother, who had been told when diagnosed of her pregnancy that she would be expecting a boy. her birth rendered mother bedridden for months, to which her vitality and beauty took a toll. thus, chaeyeon lived with a resentful mother who often hallucinated that she had given birth to twins — a prince and a princess. a son who died at the hands of a demon child. (chaeyeon was a murderer, her mother insisted. a plague; a vengeful, evil little creature who didn’t deserve to live). whenever her mother came out of her delusions and was confronted with the truth (that she never had a son and only a weak welp of a daughter), chaeyeon was always on the receiving end of her mother’s vitriol and resentment.
it wasn’t until her younger brother was born seven years later and became the dragon of the west did her mother’s health take a turn for the better. with her brother’s arrival, chaeyeon becomes virtually abandoned and neglected. (although, it can be said that chaeyeon and her brother’s relationship was never entirely bad. they got along well with him always putting in a good word for her in front of their mother and him protecting her. there is fondness and affection, but never explicitly shown love because of her mother’s favoritism giving life to chaeyeon’s own jealousy and bitterness.)
she’s forced to grow up too fast & continues to live in the shadow of her younger brother, struggling to live up to an illusion of someone kind and respectable, worthy to be called her mother’s flesh and blood. years spent in the throes of feverish dreams and drowning in sweat and tears no mother has ever wiped away, chaeyeon survives through her childhood years and reclaims her own life with a burst of flames.
where he was gentle and kind, with the sort of charisma that attracted everyone into his orbit and made him loveable, chaeyeon was always the quieter, more stoic and outwardly detached sibling who was a living slow burn flame. she was never allowed to be as lively as she could’ve been, being older and thought to be weaker and inferior to her brother, chaeyeon’s only strength and virtue worthy of praise was her resilience (re: survival skill 1000%)
she both loved and hated her brother and that feeling continued to war with her all her life until he was assassinated a few months ago. however, his death changed her and, in turn, it destroyed her mother, who is confined in her own quarters, suffering from the loss of her child. mother’s resentment develops into full-blown hatred as she blames chaeyeon, believing she should’ve been the one to die instead and laments on how she’s bad luck. mother never publicly denounces chaeyeon but since her brother’s death, her mother’s health and mental status has declined rapidly and she has since never been seen outside her palace quarters.
chaeyeon is a resilient monster in the making, honed into someone beguiling, secretive and ruthless. capable of hiding her intentions behind a sweet smile. she cuts her teeth on books on war tactics and strategy, bloodies her hands learning to wield a sword, toughens her skin on horseback and learns grace through the art of dancing, combining elegance and deadly precision to kill without mercy.
A+ strategist and cunning to the core. used to be underestimated as a child until it became a whispered secret that she was a firebender. although, hardly anyone still alive knows what degree of mastery she’s reached since her firebending became common knowledge within the palace walls. she is much more known to be an expert swordmaster. her sword art has been likened to danse macabre — princess chaeyeon never misses.
she can be kind when warranted (how else did she manage to charm the servants in the royal palace, engaging them in enough small talk and acknowledging them to a degree that whittled away at defenses and sometimes even defied protocol, so much that their tongues loosen at a probing question or a throwaway comment). she has eyes and ears in every corner. i like to think she’s built herself a secretive network of spies in the form of servants to keep her updated on things in and outside the palace walls.
she can be cold-blooded as necessary. chaeyeon does not take kindly to betrayal and those within her command and household understand that her bottom line is not to be crossed.
alluring and intelligent, she is very much a closed book with a deceptive cover. never ever underestimate what she’s capable of. she loathes being looked down upon and has certain misgivings over being third in line to the throne — not that she truly cares to reign over the fire nation (no, that’s hardly her goal at all), but moreso she is apprehensive over potential upheaval and strife that could shake her standing and position in the nation. she cares about maintaining the status quo, having sworn her loyalty to the people, willing to bleed for the nation but not in the pursuit of power and she sure as hell will not sacrifice herself for the fire lord chaesan.
on the flip side, she has a decidedly more neutral attitude towards her other royal half-siblings. frankly, she doesn’t really care for anyone but herself. it’s less about being selfish than it is about self-preservation.
what her end goal is and what she’s looking to achieve is anyone’s guess.
pretty much anti-heroine vibes kinda sorta?
plots / connections.
handmaiden / lady-in-waiting or bodyguard / retainer — either someone who has been by her side since she was a child or a recent assignment to which she is either trusting of you (as you have seen her at her worst and knows all that she’s had to endure growing up and are protective of and loyal to her) or she is very guarded and wary of you because she sorta maybe suspects you to be a spy of some sort
a tutor from age old — you taught her how to master her firebending or you taught her how to wield a sword / self-defense, hand-to-hand combat / martial arts
the enemy of my enemy is my friend — you’re both apprehensive of fire lord chaesan or you have ulterior motives and your own ambitions to contend with and decide to approach chaeyeon with a proposition
childhood friend / enemy / frenemy? — would have to be amongst her royal half-siblings or from nobility. chaeyeon has always been two-faced (she just hides it better for the sake of survival) and it’s hardly a secret that her mother had a hand in how she grew up. it’s not a secret that she was never loved as a child and that mother-daughter are always in contention. although, rumors of just how terribly she was treated has been nipped in the bud and only those who have lived in or served in the palace long enough know chaeyeon’s nickname as a cursed child. she’s done wonders to erase all connotations of her mother’s delusions misconceptions of her by presenting herself as someone powerful and worthy of respect in the eyes of the people. still, there are those who remain that know of the scars that remain, ones that still ached and hurt her no matter how hard she tried to pretend they don’t exist.
ambiguous partnership / friendship / hateship — chaeyeon doesn’t trust easily (if at all). nobody ever knows what she’s thinking or what she wants in the grand scheme of things, but you happen to see through her (or so you think) and the knowledge that you unknowingly / knowingly get under her skin makes her extremely wary of you. it’s almost like you’re both a little too alike for comfort and she bristles at being confronted by someone she can see herself in — it intrigues her as much as it bothers her. you probably get a kick out of riling her up at every encounter, finding it a little amusing that you can read her like an open book, despite how much she seems to deny it or resist you.
first love / tragic love gone wrong? — i’m a sucker for angst so a first love that ended horribly in flames and left both (or one of you) in tatters and continues to haunt you enough to turn love into hate / bitterness / resentment makes my soul sing. it had all the potential to be something wonderful, but somewhere along the way, something changed — someone changed. and nothing was ever the same again. lots of pain, lots of suffering, lots of misunderstandings and clashing of egos, mismatched ambitions / morals / desires, friction, tension, longing and regret disguised as bitterness. idk? i like to write sad things i guess? an i hate you but i love you and somehow still can’t forget you / can’t let you go sorta vibe??
a spy of some sort — you’re one of eyes and ears outside the palace walls. news of what goes on outside comes from a source that has networks everywhere. you are someone capable and intelligent enough for chaeyeon to regard you as worthy of respect. not that she’d ever tell you to your face, but actions always speak louder than words where she’s concerned
that’s all i can think of for now? i’m happy to brainstorm something original if none of the above suit your muse / isn’t really your cup of tea!
