foreshadowing love in books
!!possible spoilers for divergent and me pointlessly rambling ahead!!
something i love when i go back and reread books is seeing little things that hint at character aās hidden feelings for character b.
like in divergent, four, trisā love interest, does little things that show that he cares for her more than he lets on. for example, thereās an part in the book where i literally was like āwow thatās the most romantic thing iāve ever readā. iāll put the part in here, thereās some extra stuff in here that isnāt relevant to what iām saying so iāll put the part that really matters in bold.
for context: tris and the other dauntless initiates are waiting to start the second stage of initiation.
Before Peter can respond, Four opens the door and says, āLynn.ā He beckons to her, and she walks down the hallway, the blue light at the end making her bare head glow.
āSo youāre first,ā Will says to Uriah.
Uriah shrugs. āYeah. And?ā
āAnd you donāt think itās a little unfair that youāve spent your entire life getting ready for this and weāre expected to learn it all in a few weeks?ā Will says, his eyes narrowing.
āNot really. Stage one was about skill, sure, but no one can prepare for stage two,ā he says. āAt least, so Iām told.ā
No one responds to that. We sit in silence for twenty minutes. I count each minute on my watch. Then the door opens again, and Four calls another name.
āPeter,ā he says.
Each minute wears into me like a scrape of sandpaper. Gradually, our numbers begin to dwindle, and itās just me and Uriah and Drew. Drewās leg bounces, and Uriahās fingers tap against his knee, and I try to sit perfectly still. I hear only muttering from the room at the end of the hallway, and I suspect this is another part of the game they like to play with us. Terrifying us at every opportunity.
The door opens, and Four beckons to me. āCome on, Tris.ā
I stand, my back sore from leaning against the wall for so long, and walk past the other initiates. Drew sticks his leg to trip me, but I hop over it at the last second.
Four touches my shoulder to guide me into the room and closes the door behind me.
the way he says ācome on, trisā instead of just saying her name like everyone else is just really romantic to me. also how he touches her shoulder kind of helping her walk after almost being tripped just wow.
i donāt know if any of this makes any sense or not, but i donāt really care. thanks for reading my little tangent.
my comfort movies
here are my comfort movies (that i definitely suggest watching) in no particular order because why not.
1. romeo + juliet
āand when i shall die, take him and cut him out in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night.ā
i love this movie so much. i know some people donāt like it because itās using shakespearean language in a more modern setting, but i think that that aspect makes this movie so much better. not to mention this movie made me fall in love with claire danes. i definitely suggest watching this.
2. 10 things i hate about you
āi guess in this society, being male and an asshole makes you worthy of our time.ā
this is my favorite movie of all time. i can practically quote it word for word. i definitely see how this could be problematic, after all, patrick was payed to date kat, but itās so cute and i love it. i have watched this movie three times in a row at one point and itās just so great. watch this movie, i dare you.
3. harry potter and the chamber of secrets
āiāll be in my bedroom, making no noise and pretending that i donāt exist.ā
i love all the harry potter movies, but for some reason this one specifically is the one that makes me the happiest. it might be because itās the only movie that colin creevey is in, and i love him, or because of the scene where harry says that he set a snake on dudley and ron and hermione are just like wut ššš. either way, i love this movie and you should watch it.
4. django unchained
āi like the way you die, boy.ā
i cant explain why i like this movie as much as i do. itās a quentin tarantino movie so itās violent and has very strong language. itās a really good movie though and you should watch it if youāre into this genre. some trigger warnings for this movie: violence, language, racism, and probably more i just cant think of them right now.
5. howlās moving castle
āa heartās a heavy burden.ā
this. this movie. itās my favorite studio ghibli movie. studio ghibli movies are just so beautiful, and this one is very special to me. words cannot describe the feeling i get when i watch this movie. please watch it, i am begging you to watch it.
6. clueless
āugh, as if!ā
this movie has it all, itās funny, itās nostalgic, it has a great cast, i love it. alicia silverstone was great in this movie. itās also very quotable, like the quote about high school boys and dogs, the calvin klein dress, the dinner party speech, etc. this movie is just great. it also has paul rudd, which is always a good thing.
7. whatās eating gilbert grape
āiām not going into that whole external beauty thing because it doesnāt last. eventually, your face is gonna get wrinkly, youāll get gray hair, your boobs might sag. itās what you do that really matters.ā
i remember that i had wanted to see this movie for about two years, and then it was added to netflix and i watched it and i loved it. leonardo dicaprio did a great job in this movie and should have won an oscar for it. i really related to this movie because, like gilbert, sometimes i feel like iām stuck in my hometown and that iām going to stuck here my whole life. i definitely suggest watching this movie, itās great.

anne with an e layouts
How to strengthen a love story
One of my favorite things about Anne with an E (and oh, there are so many things I love about it) is how Gilbert thoughtfully chooses his (unrequited) love for Anne over being with Winnie. Winnie is presented as a lovely character and an extremely good match for Gilbert.Ā
While not as fully realized as Anne, she is an intelligent, kind, considerate, wealthy, and beautiful young woman. The writers had several opportunities to rule her out as a romantic prospect by making her seem silly, frivolous, or to make her beliefs/morals clash with Gilbertās. But yet the audience is given zero ammo against her.Ā
There were several moments where most shows would have ruled her out by virtue of her parents. The two places I most expected it was when her parents were introduced to Bash and in conversations about class/wealth.Ā
In the first instance, I expected the writers to take the easy out to eliminate Winnie as a love interest, by virtue of her parentsā beliefs about race. I was so pleasantly surprised that her parents went above and beyond not just tolerance, but to genuine enthusiasm for meeting Bash.
The other obvious choice for ruling Winnie out without damaging her own character would be her parentsā disapproval, of what by all means is an inferior match for their daughter. While I love Gilbert, for someone of their social standing, it would be easy to think they would want a wealthy, city-bred gentleman for their daughter to marry. Again, not only do they tolerate Gilbertās circumstances, they actively prioritize their daughterās happiness and Gilbertās virtues over societyās expectations. Her father points out thatĀ āif my daughter is happy, then so am Iā before very blatantly giving Gilbert his blessing and offering generous financial backing to support Gilbert through school.
All this to say, the show could have taken the easy way out, making Winnieās family unlikeable or unsuitable when you consider Gilbertās own morals and beliefs. But they didnāt. They made Gilbert choose between a lovely young woman with no faults, and the spirited, freckled Anne with an E. I think it makes the choice that much more powerful, especially considering that Gilbert had no expectations that Anne would return his affections. With no hope of a future with Anne, Gilbert chose to be true to his heart, without any of the cheap, usual story-telling devices writers fall back on when a love triangle is shown on screen. I canāt say that everyone involved did their absolute best at all times, but it was incredibly refreshing to see a love story play out this way.Ā
Iām sure there are plenty of posts of similar length talking about how amazing Gilbert was in wanting Winnie to not settle for someone who couldnāt give her their unwavering affection. While I loved that speech and canāt applaud it enough, I wanted to draw some attention to a few quieter moments in the show that also highlight how thoughtful and well-conceived this show is!
tl;dr Anne with an E managed to take one of the oldest tropes in the book and tell a love triangle story in a refreshing, thoughtful, and powerful way.
i genuinely think amybeth is the most beautiful person on planet earth and you can fight me on that
(gif @early-sunsets )
I know it's been said over and over again by literally all of us but I really don't understand what is Netflix's problem with Anne with an E? They do practically zero advertising for it, and the trailer comes out too close to release date to ever really build up hype so it doesn't have time to get around people and to keep appearing until people go "yeah I'll give this show a go". They do one poster for it? When other tv shows have multiple versions.
Stranger Things for example released multiple posters, multiple individual character posters so we were able to get hyped about seeing our favourites. But Anne with an E? Literally nothing. And there's such a diverse cast and characters that there's so much room to show them off!
And there's other shows like Sex Education that get promo and a new season coming out soon, and don't get me wrong that show is ok, I saw S1 I'll probably watch s2, but there's already hundreds of shows about teens having sex when netflix could be funding a show that deals with topics we never see in period dramas or such authentic, human characters.
I just...what is their problem?????
i think my favorite thing about stories is how they transport me into that world.
when i read/watched harry potter, i dreamed about being a wizard, going to hogwarts, playing quidditch, fighting the dark.
when i watched stranger things, i dreamed about having powers like eleven, fighting monsters from other dimensions, growing up with friends in the 80s.
when i watched anne with an e, i dreamed about living in avonlea, having an open mind and imagination like anne, having friends that would last a lifetime.
when i watched star wars, i dreamed about being a jedi, having the force, fighting the dark side, flying starships.
when i watched sabrina, i dreamed about being a witch, going to the academy of unseen arts, fighting lucifer.
when i read miss peregrineās home for peculiar children, i dreamed about being a peculiar, living in a time loop, fighting and evading hollowgasts.
there are so many other stories i dreamed of being part of as well.
my least favorite thing about stories is that, eventually, you wake up, and realize that everything was just a dream, and that iāll never have a magical life, or friends to last a lifetime.

the fact that this is the last day anyone can post this makes me sad
honestly i hope millie bobbie brown just gets out of acting and the public eye completely for a few years, she doesnt deserve this, this is fucking horrible
everyone involved in pressuring her and other young girls into this shit should be fucking shot
like i dont buy that she just, completley of her own accord decided āhey i wanna do a dirty dancing photoshootā likeĀ
somebody presneted this shit to her. someone told her this would be a good idea. someone set this up for her
and even if im wrong and for some reason she WAS likeĀ āhey i wanna do a sexy photoshoot for this movie that came out and had its heyday before i was even bornā, somebody, MULTIPLE SOMEBODIES had to be involved in this, somebody should have said no, somebody should have had a fucking spine and saidĀ āyeah no sorry im not doing a sexualized photoshoot for a 15 year oldā orĀ āyeah no sorry im not publishing this shit in my magazineā
My biggest question is where are her PARENTS? Iām not saying they should be super controlling or that they should tell their daughter what to wear but like⦠it seems as though they are doing NOTHING to shelter her from exploitation. Like are they just ok with a 30+ year old man texting her? With people doing sexy photo shoots with her?
i love millie with my whole heart, but this is right.
being a fifteen year old myself, i would just feel uncomfortable in half the stuff she wears.
iām not judging her (i never would) because weāre two different people and are comfortable in different things.
but itās different when itās just wearing it in general and when itās for a photoshoot, because the photoshoot will always want femaleās clothing in general to be āskimpierā or something (that may be the wrong word but just go with it).
