I Know I Love You (Dean Winchester x Latina!Reader)
Summary: After a close call on a hunt in your hometown, you come to realize that maybe the Dean that you thought of as your best friend, your partner in crime, was more to you than you'd wanted to come to terms with. What if the feelings aren't reciprocated, what then? I mean, who even knows if he would feel the same? (Me, I do)
Warnings: friends to lovers, hurt/comfort, reader has recurring nightmares, angsty, a little suggestive towards the end but not smut lolol
Itâs been a couple years since you became a new edition to the team. You guys met while both hunting the same case back in Oregon. You were stand-offish at first as they startled you and held up your gun towards them. They were as quick to diffuse the situation as you were to start it.
After a bit of talking youâd figured they were being truthful and that it was safe enough to join yourselves together for the case. After that, Dean had invited you out with them for a drink as a toast to finishing the job. You gave it a moment before ultimately deciding what the hell sure, why not? You followed behind them in your car as you guys pulled up to a bar.
You all sat at the bar next to one another, you and Sam deciding what drinks to get. Dean got his usual, turning towards you with a bit of a smirk.
âWhatâs your go-to, sweetheart?â
âWouldnât you like to know, pretty boy.â You quipped back with a smile feigning ignorance to how your words seemingly affected him, despite his obvious attempt to act as if he had no reaction to that. A blush crept up his neck faintly. You were nice enough to not point it out, but you did feel a little bit of pride for being the reason it happened. After you guys got your drinks, you all chatted for what felt like hours and realized you all had more in common than you thought, especially you and dean.
âActually, uh I mean I donât know if this is a little forward considering I just met you guys a few hours ago, but I found some signs of another case a few towns over and if you guys want, youâre free to tag along. Only if you want too though, it was just a thought I hadâ. They surprisingly said yes and the rest was history.
The boys and you were in the bunker per usual, gearing up for a hunt on a new case youâd found while going through the news articles from your hometown. Itâs one of those small towns where everyone knows everyone in some sort of nice yet still a bit creepy kind of way. The kind of place where stuff gets around fast, especially if itâs REALLY bad.
From your understanding it seems like a Lechuza had been tormenting people in the city. From mimicking the cries of babies to lure people out, actively trying to get kids as well if she saw them at night, scratch up a good amount of people, unfortunately kill a few victims that it was able to snag. You explained that much to Sam and Dean, who were a bit familiar with that cryptid but still, getting more info was always nice.
âItâs one of those things weâd heard about but had yet to encounter.â Dean said, taking a swig of the drink heâd grabbed out of the fridge, tossing one to you and his brother.
âYou also said youâd only heard about it right?â Sam says as he turns towards you.
âYeah itâd be one of those things theyâd tell you about as a kid so that you wouldnât act out or else itâd get you for misbehaving. Kinda fucked up to tell your own kids that now that I really think about it.â You chuckled as you sat back and recalled those times to them.
What you didnât tell them however, was that you actually had encountered the cryptid before. A long time ago, you were so small and it was a miracle that it was as fresh in your memory as it was. It was something that traumatized you a lot more than youâd like to admit. Something you were never particularly fond of talking about, so if it was ever brought up in conversation, youâd find a way to skirt around it. Nevertheless, here you were about to face the damn thing again that you hadnât wanted to confront.
Back on the road again, Dean is singing along to a favorite song of his on the radio,Sam was looking through books and his laptop trying to see any other people whoâd had an experience with the infamous witch owl thing themselves, and you were on the phone back and forth with your mom asking about everything.
âHowâs everyone holding up? None of you guys saw it right?â
âYeah, weâre all good, still see who you can go and ask from your friends and their families tooâ
âDonât worry iâve already been on it, god i feel like i havenât even been gone for that long and suddenly everything's in shambles.â
âPos mija, you were one of the only things keeping that kinda stuff away.â
âYeah I guess youâre right.â you replied sheepishly.
âIâm not on speaker right?â
âNo, why do you ask?â
âÂżSaben que ya lo has visto antesâ your mom still tried to whisper into the phone.
âuhhh no, not exactly, or like not yet but you know how I get about it.â
âOkay well be safe, love you, talk to you later, tell sam and dean I said hiâ
âokay I willll, I love you too, be safe byebye.â
It takes a few seconds before you hang up the call, she prays for you over the phone, so youâre usually the one to hang up first all the time, though you donât mind.
âSo whatâd she say?â Dean asked, looking at you from the rearview mirror.
âOh nothing, just telling me to be safe and ask around about it from people I know and she also said hi.â you let out a tiny laugh.
âTell her we said hi back.â he chuckles softly at the thought of your mother being so comfortable with them now to just try and have a casual conversation, as if your job wasnât insane. For a moment, the thought of it almost felt too intimate, but he shrugged it off.
âI mean she didnât say anything else? Like whatâd she ask you in Spanish?â
âOh that? It was nothing crazy I mean, just asked if I was getting up to anything out of the ordinary or bad, but y'know itâs kinda impossible not to given what we do and all.â
âAinât that the truth.â
Time went on as you dozed off in the backseat of the impala on the drive there. Felt like an eternity before youâd return to the place you thought maybe youâd left for good.
Suddenly, you were thrust into a nightmare, it was a familiar one, she stood there perched on the sad excuse of a fence of your childhood home. The owl slowly turned its head to face you, as it did you could see the face of the witch who inhabited its body. You tried not to make any sudden moves, knowing it could set it off.
You were so very afraid, you didnât know what was worse, the fact that it can attack you at every second, or the fact that it hasnât. If sheâs not trying to kill you, her presence is still a signifier of an omen of death. It doesnât have to be you, it could be a loved one. A million awful thoughts flooded your head.
You could see the front door was slightly ajar, you had one of two options. Book it to the door in hopes that youâll make it and that your family is alive in there, or kill the damn thing. You werenât completely sure if there was any sure fire way to kill a lechuza, youâd only ever heard of things to ward them off. None of the things you could think of would guarantee its death, but they also can't guarantee your survival.
You heard screams coming from the inside of the house, your legs moved faster than youâd ever felt before. You ran and ran and ran, but it felt like no matter what you did the gap between the walkway to your front door felt like it kept getting larger and larger and like youâd never reach the end.
You knew this was a dream, you tried your hardest to take some sort of control. Youâve had this dream so many times it felt more like a memory you couldnât erase and it always ended the same. Youâd run in only to find a massacre of your loved ones displayed in front of you. They looked completely unrecognizable by the time youâd gotten inside. A sharp pain stung in your throat, you couldnât tell if it was from the tears and sobs forming or something else, until you try to look down and realize you can only look so far below you to see talons sticking out of your body. You watch as the blood of your own begins to merge with everyone else's on the ground. You felt yourself go limp, there was no strength in you to fight back. At least youâd get to die surrounded by the people you loved, despite how dark of a way to go it was.
âHey,Hey! Wake upâ Dean yelled as he shook you by your shoulders.
You gasped as you sat up straight, almost too quickly for your body to process so it made you a little dizzy. You felt tears teetering over your waterline as you went to wipe them with the back of your hand.
âWhat happened? Are you okay?â Sam asked with a concerned expression on his face.
âIâm okay, I think? Iâm not entirely sure actually,I had a nightmare, itâs one that I have happen every now and again. Itâs related to the lechuza. If I'm being real, I haven't been completely honest about what I know.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWhen I was a kid,I didâŚsee her once. It was a long time ago. It was late at night, we had just gotten back home from a long trip. We were all getting off of the truck and we were about to go back inside we heard the sound of a baby crying,me and my sibling were still kids so we werenât entirely familiar with stuff like that yet, but our parents were and we all stood still for a bit before our mom yelled at my sibling to take me inside, her and my dad stayed out to face off with it I guess, I think they were just able to ward it off though. They came back with more than a few scratches and I just remember lots of blood and I was a sobbing mess before my brother was instructed to take me to my room so I couldn't see what was going on. Not that anything Iâd experienced before or after that wasnât essentially the equivalent or more of how traumatic that was for me. Honestly though, I think the thing that scares me the most is that I donât know if anyone's ever been able to kill them. I realized that I'm not entirely sure what I set us up for, i know weâve dealt with crazier, I justâŚiâm scared of losing you guys and with these nightmares,itâs like each time I have them they get worse and worse and it feels like thereâs never a universe where I win or get to have a happy ending. I wanna help everyone out though, I canât just sit there and act like nothing's happening when these things are out here killing my people,my home. I donât know,Iâm just scared,Iâm sorry for not saying anything sooner. I just never really liked talking about it, I'm sure you guys understand.â You breathed out, getting all of your thoughts out quicker than your body could handle.
âYou had us worried there, sweetheart. I know youâre scared, but I promise everything will be just fine. Weâve dealt with bigger bads than this and this isnât the first time weâd be the ones to figure out how to defeat some demon thing. Weâve got it covered, okay?â
Sweetheart. The nickname always so laced with a softness in his voice when he says it. The way he speaks so self assured does make you feel much more at ease when going on hunts. He speaks so matter of factly it almost makes you a little jealous. You were similar in many ways, but things like this were where you differed just in the slightest. Sure you can say these things too, but sometimes deep down you donât know how much you mean them. Living what has essentially been your whole life as a hunter and not knowing anything but this,itâs never been easy, no matter how much you try and pretend it is. Itâs so normal to you, but you wish it wasnât. There was a bit of comfort in knowing that this isnât just your owned experience, but something that can connect you and the Winchesters. Although youâd be lying if you said it didnât also make you sad to know they grew up into this too.
âCome on, weâre already hereâ he said as he helped you out of the backseat.
Youâd been going around town back and forth between victims to ask them about their experience of what happened. So far everyone had said just about the same things, theyâd hear whistling or a baby crying out, that or theyâd see it while they were out and about and it would try to take them or their kids.
âIâm trying to figure out what the link could be between all these peopleâ Sam pondered out loud.
âIâm not sure, maybe there isnât one?â You questioned.
âOkay so what, this old witch owl lady sells her soul to the devil for power and then decides to just start ganking people at random?â Dean says as he looks at you while beginning to lean on the hood of the impala.
âWhat else do you know about it?â
âWell for one thing I do know the story gets retold in a few different ways, Iâm just trying to figure out which is the one weâre dealing with. What I was told growing up was that she would take kids, usually bad ones, and snatch em up to god only knows where. Although I've also heard it said that she specifically seeks out revenge for those who she deems sinners, drunks, or those who have committed some sort of wrongdoing to someone, like maybe an abusive husband or stuff like that. I donât know, the stories get all convoluted and mixed up at points. She could be doing it for the love of the game for all we know.â
âWell whatever it is, weâre going to figure it out and kill the son of a bitch.â
âSounds like a damn good plan to me.â You smiled at Dean and playfully nudged his shoulder. Sam clears his throat, doing so to get the attention of the two of you back onto the matter at hand.
You guys sat on the wooden bench in the backyard of your childhood home, polishing what little weapons you had at your disposal. You cracked open a can of beer, hoping itâd attract the hellish bird to your location. You sat on the ledge of the bench, your back to Sam and Dean. They could practically see the nerves radiating off of your body. You werenât exactly trying to be the best at hiding it anyway. You watched as the sun set in the distance, just waiting for the moment to strike.
âHere take these, you'll need them for the shotguns. They should be able to deal it a good amount of damage, not sure if killing it is in our future, we can hope as much, but regardless I made these on a whim because I know these things usually harm them or ward âem offâ You told the boys before handing them both tons of rock salt bullets with added chili powder in them.
âChili powder? How does that work?â Dean questioned.
âI donât know, I know it seems a little silly, but hey people say it works when shoo-ing them away soo I mean better safe than sorry.â you responded.
It didnât take long before your conversation was interrupted that you heard what sounded like a whistle blowing through the wind. It was so quick and quiet youâd probably miss it under normal circumstances, but you all knew better than that. You all got out of your seats and rushed towards the side of the house where youâd heard the noise come from. Stopping in your tracks as you once again stood face to face with the lechuza. She stared at you with her human-esque eyes, but you knew there was no ounce of a soul behind them. Its head begins to slowly tilt at you. Sam and Dean right behind you ready to go at your command or at a sign of immediate threat. The owl quickly lifted itself into the air and plummeted back down towards you as you dropped yourself to the ground.
âNOW!â you yelled while covering your face and rolling behind them to safety before the owl could get a scratch on you.
The brothers proceeded to walk down the witch with the new bullets youâd provided them not even an hour prior. Youâd heard it let out a few screeches despite it being fast enough to dodge a good amount of the rounds. For some reason though the asshole just wasnât budging, despite your desperate attempts to take it out. It was almost too fast. It was able to push Dean to the ground, as well as the shotgun out of his hands, knocking the wind out of him. You crawled over to Dean to shield him while you reloaded the shotgun and aimed for its head, before it slipped past you. Sam covered for the two of you as he followed it to the front yard where it flew. You lifted yourself from the dried grass and steadied yourself, holding a hand out for Dean to grab onto as you picked him up from the floor and booked it to the front. You cocked the shotgun as the owl beelined towards your face as you shot at it. You shot it straight in the face, but it was able to knock you back into the wall of your house, able to get its talons onto you hard enough to have you slightly bleeding through your clothes. It wasnât enough to be a concern, but something youâd worry about later.
âOver here, ya old hag.â Dean taunted, waving his arms big and high to grab her attention and get her off your back.
She soared towards him, wings spread wide and its aura fierce. You realize you had his shotgun, wondering why heâd make himself a target for something he barely had anything on him to go against, as far as you were aware anyways. Thankfully, youâve always been quick on your feet, so you swiftly toss the shotgun Deanâs way. As he catches it, he fires it off immediately two shots back to back. The only problem is that it was a double-barrel, meaning after said two shots, youâd have to reload it again, which took a little time, time that you guys didnât have. If you were even a second late with something like this it could cost you your life. Sam was running through his journal desperately looking for some sort of prayer or chant that would cast the evil out for good. The owl covered his brother out of view. He let out a pained yell, but you guys were unable to see what happened.
âDEAN!!â you and Sam both yelled simultaneously.
You had to act fast, this cannot be how it ends, not like this. You couldnât lose one of the only things that was a constant in your life. Your body moved faster than your brain, running at an almost impossible pace. You lunged at the witch, tackling it to the ground with an anger the boys had yet to see from you. It wasnât something you enjoyed feeling and definitely wouldnât enjoy others seeing. Youâd hidden a dagger in your back pocket that youâd doused in a concoction of things meant to kill witches that youâd learned while growing up around brujeria, so why wouldnât it work? You lifted your arms and began to unleash all your unspoken feelings into sending this evil back to where it came from. It tried its hardest to fight back but to no avail as you cut it to pieces. Blood splattering all over the place and over you, but youâd be damned if you let this thing hurt and kill anymore people.
âSammy can you get me lighter fluid from the backyard and then go check on Dean please?â you managed to huff out.
He stood there baffled for a second before running to the back and making his way back to you as you were in the midst of decapitating the bird. You stood up from your previous position on the ground and stood over the lechuza. He handed you the bottle and went over to Dean, you proceeded to dump the fluid over its entire body.
âRot in hell, you piece of shitâ you breathed out as you used your lighter to set the fire ablaze, making damn sure it was dead and gone.
You ran over to Dean, the aftermath of the adrenaline catching up to you as you fell to your knees next to him on the ground. He was stabbed with its talons youâd noticed. He was still fully conscious, thank god for that. You gasped at his gashes, they werenât deadly but enough to cause a problem if you didnât patch him up fast enough. Sam went to check the trunk of the impala for first aid supplies that youâd made sure to never leave without. He came back with gauze, alcohol, and other supplies for stitching up wounds. The two of you working around him with the gauze to stop the bleeding temporarily.
âHelp me get him inside, I can do the rest.â You told Sam as you scooped one of Dean's arms over your shoulders and Sam did the same.
You sat him down against the headboard of your old bed, using old pillows and stuffed animals as cushioning to not strain his body anymore than it already has been. Thanking the younger Winchester, you offered him the spare room to rest after the night youâd all had. Heâd left the room to leave the two of you alone to sort yourselves out and knock out for the night.
âCan I?â you gestured towards Deanâs shirt to ask if you could take it off.
âYeah, go ahead, I mean itâs not like I have much of a choice here, do I?â He laughed but then winced as you helped him pull it over his head and off to the side.
âGuess itâs just the two of us here now, huh?â Dean joked at you to try to lighten the mood, but you just stayed quiet.
He assumed you were just focused on patching him up until he looked closer and saw tears brimming the waterline of your eyes. His smile faded quickly and turned into more of a worried expression. Almost feeling bad for having tried to soften the vibe, despite knowing how serious the situation back there really was.
âHey, what happened?â that softness lingering in his voice again as he asked.
Thatâs what finally did you in. Tears flooded out of your eyes, you tried to stop and dial it back, but you couldnât control it.
âYou couldâve gotten yourself killed back there.â Your voice comes out more shaky than youâd like.
âBut I didn't,â he said matter of factly.
âThat doesnât matter, you know exactly what I mean. Itâs not about if you did or didnât. Itâs about the fact that you put yourself in danger like that.â you said, finishing the last of the stitches on his chest.
âThat thing had you thrown against a wall, you expected me to do nothing?â
âThatâs not what I said. I just donât want you putting yourself in harm's way for me. I canât bear the thought of something happening to you. Thatâs my absolute worst nightmare. Iâd seen it so many times in those dreams that I was afraid maybe this time I wouldn't be so lucky to wake up and have the luxury of seeing you alive afterwards. I love you Dean. For fucks sake, Iâm in love with you Dean Winchester I always have been and Iâve felt awful keeping that from you for this long and everything that happened tonight just scared me to hell and back.â your statement came out weaker as the sentence went on.
His breath got caught in his throat as he stared at you in silence. You looked up to see his face in the state of a shell-shocked look. He looked as if he was aching to say something but wasnât sure how to find the words.
âIâm sorry, I just wasnât thinking okay and I got caught up in it all, I didnât want you getting hurt or worse.â He said, his tone a little guilty.
âI know, Dean.â You wiped the tears from your eyes.
âAnd I just- I love you too, Iâm sorry, câmere.â
âI justâŚI canât lose you, I couldnât take that. Iâve already lost so much in this life and I can't lose you too.â you said while composing yourself.
He caressed your face, wiping what he could of your tears and some of the blood it mixed with from the fight. You both leaned in slowly, but he stopped for a second.
âAre you sure this is what you want, baby?â
âWhat kinda question is that, of course I do. I know the risks of being with you and what that comes with, I could ask you the same thing, but why would I when I already know the answer.â Your roles reversed, now youâre the one reassuring him softly.
You pulled him by the back of his neck into a slow and gentle kiss. It was even better than youâd ever imagined. You had stayed like that for a few minutes, stealing kisses from each other like you were scared that you guys wouldnât get this chance again. It was like you were scared of the possibility of this scenario fading away from your grasp. At some point you both pulled away from each other. The room filled with the small sounds of your unsteady breathing. Dean stares at you with the most genuine heartfelt look youâd ever seen him express.
âIâm still here, Iâll always be here. You wonât lose me, I can promise you that muchâ He said while snaking an arm around your waist to give you a reassuring hug, but also to make sure not to put any pressure on his wounds.
You leaned into his touch, it happened so casually and neither of you fought it. It was like you guys had done this a million times before, you fit each other perfectly like puzzle pieces. You pushed yourself off of him slowly and sat yourself in front of him. He watched as a small smile began to form on your face.
âDonât ever do that damsel in distress shit ever again, Winchester.â you said while laughing with dry tear stained cheeks that are still covered in blood.
âWell if youâll get like this every time, I canât make any promises. Can I be honest, you look crazy hot when youâre all mad and covered in blood.â He states, sending a wink your way.
âWell that I canât deny, but still be more careful next time, yeah?â Your tone of voice lowered in a way that sent shivers down his spine and other places in his body.
That much made itself visible to you through the tent in his jeans. His cheeks flushing with embarrassment as he looked like he was about to explain himself to you before you stopped him.
âSorry, I didnât mean for that to happen.â his eyes making contact with everything but you.
âDean, it's fine, I know you didnât.â you laughed a little at his antics.
âNow itâs my turn to say youâre kinda hot when you get all flustered like this. The big and strong Dean Winchester at my mercy and weâve only just kissed. Whatâll you do when we move on to bigger things, huh? Kinda turns me on to think about it.â you whispered while sliding your hand up and down his bicep and back up to his shoulder resting it there.
âI mean you can find out right now.â He fired back at you, eyes brimming with desire.
âIâm afraid not tonight, cowboy.â you sighed dramatically.
âYouâve gone through enough for one night and I'm not gonna add to that by jumping your bones. It can always wait, plus just means itâll be that much sweeter when we actually get to it.â you caressed his face and brought your lips to his face, giving him a little peck on his cheek. He groaned, but agreed with the sentiment.
âOkay I'm gonna run the shower for you and wash the sheets so we don't have to sleep on the yâknowâŚblood.â you laughed at the predicament as itâs not something most couples usually had to deal with. Youâd gotten used to the unusual though, nothing new for you guys.
âYeahhh definitely notâ He chuckled from you guys back and forth banter.
Somehow it felt like fate brought you guys together, that in every timeline youâd end up like this. No matter the circumstances, your connection would always just find its way in those timelines.
You were out of the shower, sitting on your bed with your mirror facing you. You were already in your pajamas, putting the last of your products in your hair, humming tunes to whatever artist comes to your brain next. Dean was on the other half of the bed, tucked into the blanket as comfy as can be. You could see his head peeking out from the blanket, because heâs just been staring at you giddy the whole time.
âWhat's up?â you questioned as you stared back at him in the mirror with a smile.
âNothing, just thinking about how im the luckiest man aliveâ he might as well have been swinging his feet and giggling too.
âYouâre such a dork.â you say looking back at him, taking in the view of Dean in such a calm and silly setting despite all the events that transpired tonight.
âDonât act like you donât love it.â
âI didnât say that I didnât enjoy it. Itâs one of the many reasons I fell for you in the first place.â You leaned over to him and gave him a kiss.
âYou almost done, sweetheart?â
âYes, finishing up anddd Iâm done.â
âGood, because I wanted you right here with meâ he patted the space on the bed next to him as if you werenât just a few feet away from him.
âYouâre so needy.â you said, mocking his tone as you got up to turn off the light.
âOnly when it comes to you.â as he took your hand and pulled you into the bed with him.
âLetâs get some rest now, yeah?â You said as you pulled each other in for another kiss.
You were facing each other, giddy as ever. You cuddled yourself up to him, head laying on his chest. You could hear his heartbeat as you laid there. Yâknow considering everything that happened that day, it ended on a good note. That is all you could ever wish for really. You felt yourself dozing off, in a state of comfort that you hadnât felt in a long time.
âSo you wanna tell me whats up with the emo boy band and anime postersâ a hushed whisper by your ear. Itâs like you could hear his stupidly pretty smile going ear to ear.
âOkay, now you ruined it.â you laughed and turned your back towards him.
He pulled you back into him and planted a soft kiss on your shoulder.
âOh baby, Iâm barely getting started.â he said as he found home in the crook of your neck. The both of you drifted off to sleep soon enough.

The pettiness is just đđ
Sound on! Sound on!
He has since begun getting past the defensiveness and actually talking to people on the left to learn their perspective, and is openly admitting that no, if this hadn't happened to him, he wouldn't have considered our side of things, and that's wrong.
Love me some schadenfreude as much as the next guy, but we actually WANT these people to finally blink and go "oh shit wait, maybe I should move LEFT".
Bc the more we have on our side (esp ppl who can say they left MAGA and finally understand how culty it was, how bigotry is wrong, etc), the more resources we have with which to apply pressure and intimidation to these fucking fascists.
