The opposite of anxiety is not calmness, it is desire. Anxiety and desire are two, often conflicting, orientations to the unknown. Both are tilted toward the future. Desire implies a willingness, or a need, to engage this unknown, while anxiety suggests a fear of it. Desire takes one out of oneself, into the possibility of relationship, but it also takes one deeper into oneself. Anxiety turns one back on oneself, but only onto the self that is already known. There is nothing mysterious about the anxious state; it leaves one teetering in an untenable and all too familiar isolation. There is rarely desire without some associated anxiety: We seem to be wired to have apprehension about that which we cannot control, so in this way, the two are not really complete opposites. But desire gives one a reason to tolerate anxiety and a willingness to push through it.

“My eldest daughter, Suldana, is in love with another woman. She is eighteen and she spends her days working at our kiosk selling milk and eggs, and at night she sneaks out and goes down to the beach to see her lover. She crawls back into bed at dawn, smelling of sea and salt and perfume. Suldana is beautiful and she wraps this beauty around herself like a shawl of stars. When she smiles her dimples deepen and you can’t help but be charmed. When she walks down the street men stare and whistle and ache. But they cannot have her. Every day marriage proposals arrive with offers of high dowries but I wave them away. We never talk about these things like mothers and daughters should; but I respect her privacy and I allow her to live.” — excerpt from Fairytales for Lost Children a book by Diriye Osman

Beauty
My older sister soaps between her legs, her hair a prayer of curls. When she was my age, she stole the neighbour’s husband, burnt his name into her skin. For weeks she smelt of cheap perfume and dying flesh.
It’s 4 a.m. and she winks at me, bending over the sink, her small breasts bruised from sucking. She smiles, pops her gum before saying boys are haram, don’t ever forget that.
Some nights I hear her in her room screaming. We play Surah Al-Baqarah to drown her out. Anything that leaves her mouth sounds like sex. Our mother has banned her from saying God’s name.

I know the subtitle says "In another life, I would really have liked just doing laundry and taxes with you."
But after rewatching that line, I realized that he actually says in Mandarin: 如果有来生, 我还是会选择和你一起报税, 开洗衣店。Which better translates to "If there is another life, I would still choose to be with you - doing taxes, opening a laundromat."
I'm totally normal about this. I'm really not -

I love the south and the caribbean and Mexico for the warmth and how many black people I see smiling and also how willing everyone is to call me beautiful. They're scared to call me beautiful in New York. Perhaps that's why the people look so unhappy
This year was so stressful I'm going gray

a lesson i learned this year is that a person's capacity for growth is directly linked to how much truth they can face about themselves without running away
