the “you” is America. caught up in the lights and the glory of the “American dream” and what America represents and all the sparkly shiny versions of it. 

“American glory faded before me Now I’m feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress Running through rose thorns, I saw the scoreboard And ran for my life”

the 2016 election. all the glamour and the shiny versions of America faded in a single night and exposed all of the nasty things beneath. we no longer want to ideolize “American things” like prom and homecoming and American culture. because look where it got us. we run for our fucking lives.  “No cameras catch my pageant smile I counted days, I counted miles To see you there, to see you there It’s been a long time coming, but”

we put on a show, we thought we could win it. we played the game. and yet… “It’s you and me, that’s my whole world They whisper in the hallway, “She’s a bad, bad girl” (Okay)”

“The whole school is rolling fake dice You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes”

the whole entire country is playing a fake game with fake news. people aren’t thinking, they’re acting like this is a game. well, look what happened.

miss americana and the hearbreak prince. the dream of what america is versus the reality we are currently living in.

we’re going to take it back. we’re going to paint it blue again.  “My team is losing, battered and bruising I see the high fives between the bad guys Leave with my head hung, you are the only one Who seems to care”

literally. the 2016 election. it’s very very clear. we were losing. the liberals were losing. the republicans were getting ahead and they were winning. and people didn’t fucking care… they didn’t care.

the aftermath. the country burning. American values being confused with racism and homophobia and nationalism. the pr*sident acting like “boys will be boys” is a justification for the crimes being committed. it’s fucking terrifying.  “No cameras catch my muffled cries I counted days, I counted miles To see you there, to see you there And now the storm is coming, but”

we’re terrified and we’re crying but we have to put on a brave face. we have to count down the days. we’re going to make it. the storm is coming, it’s here, we’re in the middle of the storm. but it will pass. we will get through it.  “And I don’t want you to (Go), I don’t really wanna (Fight) ‘Cause nobody’s gonna (Win), I think you should come home (repeated) That someday we’re gonna (Win)”
