6, 7, 8 and 27 for Maura? 👀 💜🐸👑
6- Are there any parts of them that they abandoned as they grew older? Oh she had to abandon the need for validation from a lot of people. She doesn't care if she's praised by the king himself, she won't feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in that. She's very much a solitary creature in that way. If she wants to feel accomplished, she has to feel accomplished herself, and not have someone tell her she did a good job. She's more of a 'my actions mean more than your words' kind of person. The only person she wants to hear praise from is long gone.
7- What is their purpose that they believe in and work towards She genuinely has no idea any more LOL she thought she was working towards being someone who preserves the traditions of her house and stays with her family and That was her purpose, but now it's just kind of dissolved into... don't die? Be a good enough asset? It's confusing and deeply unsettling to her and she absolutely despises it. As a more immediate sort of goal, she'd like to be a good horseback rider and counsel member, though she's sure she'll achieve one quicker than the other.
8- How curious are they about the world around them, do they actively seek learning new things She's deeply curious about the natural world around her, and always has been. Her earliest memory is with her brother teaching her how to mimic a bird call. She's someone who, if given the opportunity, will become a voracious reader about the natural world and the intricacies of the human body, but she'd much rather learn 'on the field' than sit with a book and read. She's a more practical learner that way! If she has to learn about politics and managing people, she might just have to view it through that lens to make the learning process bearable.
27- What does safety look like to them and when do they feel the most secure and safe Safety is a pair of hands that used to braid her hair while she talked about what she'd learned that day. Safety is a surcoat she still hasn't grown into, gifted to her on her fourteenth birthday. Safety is the birdsong in the gardens at night, the only place she feels isn't listening to her. Safety is a song that can only be sung by people who speak her language. Safety is a joke she hears about how weddings and funerals aren't that different because they're both for mourning someone. Safety is trying and failing to keep her safe with misdirection. Safety is the smell of hay in the stables during a feast because the world is overwhelming and she needed a place to hide. Safety is a pair of eyes that don't meet hers often, but that she knows are looking. Safety is a cracked mirror with a thousand pieces, and they can never truly fit together neatly, but they still make an image despite it. It's still bad luck.
13- Is there anything they're terrified of becoming or turning into
18- How aware are they of their flaws and shortcomings and what's their reaction if someone points them out
For Maura?
13 - The more time she spends in the Red Keep, the more she kind of fears becoming like the nobles there! She sees all the highborn games as something nobles do when they lose their ability to see people as people, and that's something that literally goes against the way she'd been taught to view the world! She was very much expected to be a future elder for her house, more a lore-keeper and someone who remembers the traditions of the crannogmen than a lady, especially because her family had so many children already that she didn't have to worry about succession before she's promptly informed that no, her role's changing drastically, after her whole life had been spent building up to this one purpose almost. She's already had her future stolen in front of her once, when her eldest brother left and refused to be the heir to Greywater Watch, and suddenly her whole life had to be redirected. If you were to ask her before finding out she had to marry, she'd tell you she fears becoming like her mother. Although she loves her deeply, she'd mostly been raised by her grandmother and older siblings as her mother had severe postpartum complications (physical and mental) after her birth, and because of that distance, she'd never felt close to the woman who gave birth to her. As she grew up, she felt as though her mother's only gotten more demanding, never truly finding anything good in her. She thinks if she ever had a daughter, her one fear would be becoming like her.
18 - Maura's very good at recognising her shortcomings in the sense of starting from a place of a) being a northerner and all that entails in the Red Keep and b) being from a minor house in the North at that. The Reeds are not politically in the best position given their isolation and she's well aware she has to kind of work on multiple fronts at once just to try and keep up with other noble-born girls. She's also well aware she's not exactly a favourite within the court because of this fact, and because the history of her house's involvement with the CotF and the worship of the Old Gods. However, because of the recent attempts at 'branching out', she's also exposed to just how rigid she is when it comes to change. She was never intended to be wed and suddenly she has to learn a whole new set of skills, which she despises! But she's very much not self-aware of her flaws when it comes to her character. She doesn't think she's perfect, no one's perfect (except her eldest brother), but she thinks someone pointing them out to her means she's being attacked because of everything stated above. It's kind of like a shield almost, trying to guard what's left of her home fiercely, even if it means coming across as unable to compromise. She's not exactly good at taking criticism if it doesn't come from someone she trusts, and with the lack of those, she's kind of almost unreasonable unless someone of literal higher authority speaks to her, and she only listens then because she has to.
