🗝 After an accident, 3 teens move into a gothic New England cottage full of impossible scifi inventions to convalesce & learn to navigate the world on wheels ♿ On day 1 they accidentally open a portal 🔮 and lock eyes with a hot alien himbo 🌳 The trio are determined to find him again, and not just to return his shapeshifting furby 🦉
he would not fucking say that, but with disability.. he would not fucking be able bodied. sick n tired of characters walking away from multiple life changing injuries without a scratch. let’s get some natural consequences in here.
give that knife/sword fight survivor nerve damage. give the character who was shot in the gut a stoma. give that fire survivor lung damage and an oxygen cannula. give that leg injury survivor a cane. give that starvation survivor gastroparesis. give that spinal injury survivor a manual chair or powerchair.
while we’re at it, give your characters congenital disabilities too, just because. give them intellectual and development disabilities. give them acquired and postviral illnesses. dare to make somebody bedbound. for me.
Once my character Mias Bolton experiences his spinal cord injury, he's paralyzed. That won't change. Because I know that feeling of betrayal, when Batwoman/Oracle was just... able to walk again. Her time in a wheelchair seemingly erased.
What does change for Mias (other than gaining self esteem & self acceptance & discovering people will make the effort to include him & his love life is far from over) is that he & his friends discover ✨magic✨ But magic isn't there to "fix" his disability!

Across humanity there are some things most known cultures have celebrations for and can be used well as an easy way to expand on the lore of your world without info dumping. here are some of them:
Independence / Unity / National / Freedom Day: the day used to commemorate when a nation, kingdom, or faction came together as one. This may be the day a treaty was signed, the day the former regime was overthrown, the day a new ruler was sworn in...
Ruler's Birthday: if there is a single or a few rulers, their birthdays might be celebrated with large festivities
End & Beginning of a year: regardless which calendar is used, most societies had some way to measure the length of one cycle (lunar cycle, every ___ amount of days, the beginning of a particular season, maybe something more abstract like the first day the flowers bloom or the day of the first snowfall...) and celebrate accordingly
Celebrating a Season: celebrating summer with festivities outside, spring with a flower market, autumn with a harvest festival, winter with a bonfire...
Day of Mourning/Remembrance: either in general or a day for remembering the dead from a certain event, tragedy, war...
Religious Festivals: depending on your type of belief system there could be many celebrations or only one or two
Historic Memorial Days: the day a war ended, the day of a massacre, the day of a revolution, the day of any grand and influential type of event that is remembered years later
Labour Day: a day to celebrate those who work hard to actually uphold the system and makes up the vast majority of the population, often accompanied by protest and conversations/demands between leader(s)/speakers of the people and the head of state

Allows you to choose the origin of where you want the name to be from, whether you want a more feminine vs masculine vs androgenous name (as voted by users), random surname generator, and clicking on the name gives you important info like if there are any famous people with the same name, where it’s from, how common it is, and how people tend to see it, etc.
You can also search their name database by letter or meaning or origin, so if you know you want a character who has a name/surname that starts with an A from Ireland, there’s a whole list for you to choose from.
Census sites
Especially useful if you’re looking for a name from a specific place and/or time period. Just search “(country) census (year)” and you’ll find a database of real people who lived in that place at that time. No one can ever call your names unrealistic again.
For coming up with place names:
Fantasy name generator
This site can basically come up with any name for any person, place, or thing you might ever need. There are also specific generators for different fandoms if you’re looking to make an OC in an established world.
For finding that one word on the tip of your tongue:
One Look Thesaurus
This is my go-to. Not only can you find synonyms like a regular thesaurus, but you can also describe words like “unhappy smile” or “quiet laugh” to find the more specific word you’re looking for.
For coming up with ideas:
Word cloud
When I need to inspire a new idea, I write down all the things I’m interested in (hauntings, academia, lesbians, etc.) and put them into a word cloud to shuffle them next to each other. Sometimes seeing a concept in a new context can spark new ideas!
WWF Discord
This is my discord channel (shameless plug) for when you need to brainstorm off other people but don’t have anyone irl to talk to. We’re also happy to read and give feedback on writing, answer writing questions, or just chat!
For visualizing places and characters:
Pinterest
Pinterest can at times be a bit too sterile for my tastes, but if you use the right words, you can find more realistic photos of places. For example, adding “aesthetic” after basically any word will bring up a more broad collection of photos to help you flesh out places.
This is also a great way to find photos of people and fashion to help visualize characters. I’m bad at describing clothes, so I usually collect photos of outfits to help me know what my characters are wearing. Searching up “character inspiration” will collect more interesting photos and drawings of people who might not exactly be of our world.
(However, to make Pinterest not show you AI results, you have to go into your settings and check the “reduce AI” box. Luckily, it does mostly work.)
Death to Stock
Like pinterest but completely AI free (hooray!) Only drawback is that you have to pay a monthly subscription (about $20 CAD).
Cosmos
Very similar to pinterest but slightly more "artsy". I'm not super familiar with this one but I believe all the photos are human and you can save them and create collections with a free account.
Dupe Photos
Royalty-free stock image site with very Pinterest-core photos!
Minecraft
If you haven’t built your entire fictional city in Minecraft instead of writing, why not? It’s fun.
The Sims
This one is dual purpose because you can not only create your characters in Create a Sim, but you can design their houses. If you really want to go for it, you can bulldoze all the lots in your town and build your world from scratch.
For checking grammar:
Grammar Girl
Easy to follow definitions and examples, and if you learn better by listening, every article comes with a podcast to follow along with instead.
Grammar Monster
This one is my favourite for checking grammar rules because there’s tons of examples in graphics that helps for any situation.
Reedsy
Among other things, reedsy can connect you to professional editors within your budget.
For writing advice:
One Stop for Writers
This one was recommended from my discord channel and has all sorts of tutorials and resources for the writing craft.
My Blog Directory
Another shameless plug, but if you need writing advice on something specific, you can search through my directory to see if it’s there. If it isn’t, you can always send me an ask about it!
For an alternative to Google Docs:
Ellipsus
Think google docs but without AI. Yay!
(will update this list with any more suggestions or resources I discover 😊)
I keep making more box braid/twist/cornrow brushes for Clip Studio Paint 😅 They're all free for black history month! I'll be uploading more brush packs over the next few days, including brushes ending in pony beads, & 🌈 rainbow hued brushes that shift in color based on how much pressure you apply!
I'd LOVE if you tagged me in any art you make with my brushes; @DeathPetalArt or @PolyAmorKey #DeathPetalBrush 🖌
I have 2 broken metal rods in my spine, so I'm stuck here in agonizing pain for who knows how long, & seeing people use my work to represent themselves & their ideas would really cheer me up 🥰 Any skill level welcome.
Sim + outfit combo: Gia (Hime ver.)
(ᴗ͈ ˬ ᴗ͈ )ꕤ. "Gia has always dreamt big. She hopes to one day become a princess, live in a castle, and meet her one true love... okay, maybe that's too much, especially when she wants to be a mangaka and has six beloved bunnies. But she can dream!"
I think we need to start giving stories happy endings again. Grimdark suffering and then everyone dies has been done to death now. We need a reason to hope and a reason to try.
YES! ABSOLUTELY! I love it when characters face unimaginable horrors and manage to survive and scrape the pieces of themselves back together and start living again. A happy ending doesn’t have to be sugary sweet and placid, it just has to inspire hope.
I'm imagining a world where, 20 years ago, I was flying down an icy hill on a sled, except this time, I wasn't alone...
I'm creating a comic, & putting my 3 high school OCs through a version of the sledding accident that crushed my spine when I was 16, & almost ended my life. But unlike me, they'll have each other. & that means that on some level, I'm retroactively not alone. Maybe it's dumb, but I feel less alone. They'll still have to deal with the grief & loss & survivor's guilt, as only one of the three is permanently paralyzed in the accident, but unlike me, they also get to go live in a scifi house that's secretly a spaceship, & find out that magic is real, & accidentally open a portal to a verdant world of misty green floating ruins where they meet a really hot alien, & an actual living furby jumps through into their house & starts terrorizing their cats.
At least, that's the plan. 22-44% of people with spinal cord injuries develop what's called central pain disorder, & I drew the short straw, so I know only agony. But I'm starting yet another new drug trial, so we'll see.
EDIT: Got some X-rays back. I've been walking around with broken titanium rods in my spine for 2 fucking decades. So I'm feeling pretty grim & dark right now. It's really hard to work on a comic about 3 teens experiencing the same accident I went through when I'm suddenly bleeding freely from all those old wounds again. Hell, I think I've found new wounds. I haven't grieved the fact that I could have lived a normal independent life. I didn't have to be a loser, crippled by constant agony. I could have stayed in school, stayed in CA, & protected my brother from his mother, instead of running to protect myself. I keep waiting, expecting I'll wake up from a nightmare, & the last 20 years will vanish. I wish they would. They're all a mistake. All of them. I've done nothing but barely survive. I've done nothing but haunt my own body like an unwelcome ghost.
EDIT #2: Ok, I'll get over it. I'll still make the story I needed when I was a kid facing a spinal cord injury in 2004. & I still really detest grimdark, even when I'm filled with rage & anguish & grief.

Let’s talk about accessibility and how it impacts able-bodied people for a second. I know this sounds weird but it is good to acknowledge how these things affect the majority of people.
There really is no reason to not make things more accessible. Historically, making things more accessible has helped everyone benefit more. Having curbs dip down helps disabled people in wheelchairs or similar mobility aids, but also helps people with strollers, bikes, and other things as well. Having a button to make doors open is usually intended for wheelchairs again, but I know many who use it just cause it’s easier. And it applies for other disabilities too! Captions are a good example, they’re made for people with auditory processing disorders but a lot of people use them just cause it’s helpful. I’ve been seeing on YouTube shorts a bra brand for disabled people that uses magnets and has hooks so everyone can put it on and I’ve heard people just getting them because of preference. And it’s important to me that it’s because of preference, because more options means more people can get what just works better for them in any way. Which once again, just helps everyone find something they like using.
It is true that because of how some disabilities conflict, it’s impossible to make everything accessible to everyone, but it has been proven that many accessible things have benefits for able-bodied people(or people with unrelated disabilities to the intended use). Make things more accessible forever and ever and ever because it will benefit you and most other people. You should actually care about this if you’re not disabled because you’re likely gonna benefit from it as there will be new innovation that makes life better for everyone. And this means disabled people can do more things, which as a disabled person means a lot. I feel horrible when I’m not able to do as much as others and if I can do more then I will genuinely feel so much better. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
Increasing accessibility helps everyone! That's a topic that I really want to eventually address in my comic PolyAmorKey, which I will never actually publish, because I am disabled, & I live in constant agony :P But someday. Someday...
I don't know how to operate Tumblr, how do I find your comic? 😅
So, I must admit that the comic doesn't exist yet in a physical form per say, but I swear I'm starting on thumbnails to plan out the first few pages tomorrow, or working on the script if it's a bad pain day.
...I also just found out today that 2 of the titanium rods in my spine are broken, so I'm kind of frazzled at the moment. The opening scene in the comic also involves a character experiencing a spinal cord injury just like mine, also while sledding 😅 I'm the one who wrote the plot, so I have only myself to blame 🤷♀️ I truly appreciate your interest, you're so cool & I really want to collaborate on a project in the future when my pain levels are under better control 😊 Maybe when I can get back into sewing again!
...Anyway, this is a sprowlet! It's a creature from my comic. They're shapeshifters, & they look like little fluffballs when they hatch from giant eggs, then they grow into this form, with big avian dinosaurian hind claws. Then when they're older, they develop a more complex form, with a longer weasel body, & multiple sets of shorter legs, 4-8 avian claws or fuzzy feline paws, & they gain the ability to awkwardly float. They sometimes sprout tiny useless vestigial bat wings at random intervals.
...Ok, so I unintentionally reinvented the Furby, & then the Long Furby. I just really like Furbies! They're the perfect juxtaposition of creepy, cute, & stupid 🥰 I have 3 originals, & 1 Furby Boom. I just need to find a safe place to display them where my kitten won't try to fight them. Yes, even if they're turned off. She tries to fight my toes when I'm asleep. I get no peace.

I'll definitely private this when I get closer to publishing, as most of this should be revealed slowly as you read, but here's a quick & dirty summary of the most important backstory & plot points of my WiP comic 🗝PolyAmorKey🗝 so far!
300-500k years ago, when the boundaries between the planes were thinner & more permeable, the spaces between the threads of fate wider, & the weave of those tapestries looser, some of our evolutionary ancestors found themselves wandering, slipping, sliding, & falling through these openings, & on, into strange new worlds. There, ✨️magic✨️ was real, & wild, & hungry. Separated from our ancestors on earth, & faced with wildly differing evolutionary pressures, their descendants evolved into, well… I think we have to call them Elves. Elves, & vampires, & dryads, & many of the other fantastical beings found described bombastically in our ancient myths & legends. After all, many of those myths originated from glimpsing our lost “cousins” through those windows in reality, as well as a few rarer physical encounters, when boundaries between the planes once again grew thin & pliable, & a few individuals slipped through again, to make contact, & mischief (& more than a few babies).
This happened often enough that there was still some gene flow, but the main reason interbreeding is possible with modern homo sapiens today is that our “cousins” have developed fairly advanced magically enhanced breeding technology, & standardized “gene mixing kits” are standard kit for scouts & explorers. Let's just say these sexy space aliens behaved more like they fell out of the bonobo side of the family tree.
I finally started on this portrait of the protagonist Niava's mother, Ly'lath Teivelle, although she still looks too young. It's the first time I've actually drawn her, because in the original comic, when I was 14-16, she had “mysteriously disappeared” to save her daughter from her evil grandmother, Yazara Teivelle. Now, she's the backbone of the plot; a brilliant engineer from another world, sent to the Earth 20 years ago as a spy by her people, the Sanguarathi Empire, ahead of their invasion plan, & then abandoned without any word.
When they didn't return on schedule to rain down fire & blood, Ly'Lath spent the next year feverishly building 12 enchanted blood magic keys that she believed together might have the combined power to rip reality apart, just so she could return back home to her people. But she eventually realized that her real home was here, on earth, with her nerdy human lover Diallo Mercy, & her young daughter Niava. So she hid the keys in her old transdimensional ship, at the time dormant & disguised as a cute gothic inspired brick cottage, & she hoped that the Sanguarathi Empire would never return to conquer the Earth. But she continued regularly sparring with her husband, & built a few secret weapons keyed to their magic signatures, just in case.
Unbeknownst to Ly'lath, her people couldn't have returned; it had taken everything they had to open the first portal to send her to the Earth, & the big ritual they'd planned, to gather enough energy to spin their enchanted blood web throughout all the known dimensions, & tear open a permanent portal all the way through to the earth, had gone terribly wrong only a few months later. The few survivors of the imperial forces & the priest mages of the Church of Eternal Thirst had fled, beaten & disgraced, & remained in hiding on their home planet Sanguahara, in no position to come pick up a single scout, regardless of her mother's rank, & especially not to invade the Earth. They continued their traditional bickering & infighting among their own 12 houses on Sanguahara, but barely dared to leave the planet's surface, due to the curse that resulted from the spoiled ritual. They couldn't use blood siphoning magic on other sapient beings without being haunted & drained by ravening hungry ghosts, who appeared from the dark, & dragged their screaming victims back into the nearest shadows, where they disappeared forever. (It's later revealed that they're transported to the undead moon Aevrim, but we'll get there.)
Their home planet Sanguahara was unique, as far as they knew, because it was alive, filled with molten hot magically potent blood, which they called Sanguilith, or _, which gave the Sanguarathi their power, filtered through the plants & animals they consumed. But after greed led them to frack their planet, causing tremendous environmental destruction, they tried to bring another moon, Aevrim, to life, by sacrificing the entire colony of alien beings living there. After the failed ritual, the moon now had a soul, which had not been the intended consequence, & it was undead, not alive, & knew only hunger & rage. It called to the spirits of every creature the Empire had killed in their conquest, & when a member of the Church of Eternal Thirst tried to siphon power from another sapient being, glowing red tattoos appeared on their skin, turning them Sangriven, mad, & they were swarmed by hungry ghosts, which dragged them into the nearest shadow, no matter how small, where they disappeared. It's later discovered that their bodies are transported back to Aevrim, the undead moon.
Eventually Yazara Teivelle, Ly'lath's mother, will discover her granddaughter Niava's existence on Earth. The Sanguarathi believe that their blood runs true, so there are no “half-breeds;” if you can call the blood magic without becoming Sangriven & losing your will, then you're one of them. Yazara believes that Niava can soothe the moon of Aevrim's ghost, & free her people from their curse, & she's not taking no for an answer.
Obviously Niava does not want super powerful magic space vampires trying to take over the galaxy again, especially now that they have this portal to Earth. But she's also heartbroken at the apparent suffering of millions of ghosts who allegedly can't find peace or rest. It's also disturbing what that says about the existence of some kind of afterlife for everyone. Big bummer!
(Spoiler: It'll turn out to be nanomachines, not ghosts, so no, there's not necessarily an afterlife, & no special destiny. & if Niava does figure out how to quiet them, it's not because she was destined to, it's simply because she's smart, & kind, & she took the time to try. I'll tie in something with the technology's interaction with "perfect" bodies vs disabled bodies, eugenics being the Sanguarathi downfall, making the tech more inclusive being the reset & allowing the "ghosts" to "escape." But all that stuff is waaay out in the future of the comic. I just really like characters facing hard choices with no obvious good answers.
That's all back story! I should really edit this so that part goes after this part, lol. Sorry 😇 The story actually starts about 2 decades after Ly'lath Teivelle was abandoned on an alien planet known as "Earth," & her teenage daughter Niava Mercy & her 2 best friends Mias Bolton & Kitta Pjur go to stay at Ly'lath's old lair- I mean, laboratory, to convalesce, after a sledding accident leaves Mias paralyzed & in a wheelchair, & Kitta with a broken wrist & ankle.
So, the protagonists;
Kitta is a manic pixie, & the living embodiment of ADHD. She's skinny, pale, with short pink hair. Impetuous, bombastic, & a little self centered, but devoted to her friends. She often gets them into trouble by talking or acting before thinking. She has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.
Mias is shy, quiet, reserved, laid back, chill, short, thin, with olive skin, dark eyes, blue hair, pretty face. He invents gadgets & tries to improve his mobility aids now that he's in a wheelchair. He'll regain some leg function, like me. He'll get a magical animal companion, a furby that can shapeshift, & eventually gets big enough to be ridden as a mount by several people. It might even turn into a spaceship like the Cabbit Ryo-Ohki from that weird old 90s anime Tenchi Muyo.
Mias could be trans masc. He could just be a really short pretty cis man. Who's to say? He hasn't told me, & it feels rude to ask him at this point.
Niava is autistic coded but very high masking. She's plump, muscular, curvy, with brown skin & purple curls, which she usually wears in braids or twists with beads. She dresses in dark purples & blacks with stompy goth boots, & calls her style "gothleisure" (goth + athleisure). Teeshirts, leggings, skirts, jeans. She's brave, smart, sarcastic, acerbic, loyal, & politically active.
After the 3 teens are released from the hospital, Ly'lath & her husband Diallo help them move into her old cottage/secret lab, & settle into rooms on the ground floor. It's a bit hard to tell how many floors the building has, but 2 of the 3 kids are still on a lot of pain meds from their reconstructive surgeries, so they brush it off. Ly'lath takes Niava aside, & gives her a strange key with a circuit board pattern, & shows her how the inner walls of this cute & seemingly ordinary building are actually overlaid with highly advanced & alien looking technology, none of it in any recognizable earth language. The stairs can be turned into ramps for Mias's wheelchair & Kitta's crutches with the glowing circuit key. (Later they find more fun settings for the stairs. Hogwarts, eat your heart out.)
Ly'lath confides that there's a part of Niava’s heritage that she hasn’t been ready to share, because there’s a history of conquest & imperialism that still feels too close. She apologizes for always being gone during Niava's early childhood working on secret projects in this secret lab, & for having her father Diallo teach her & her friends self defence from such an early age, but there are hidden dangers, & she can't tell her about them yet. She asks Niava to please stay out of the north & south towers, the starlight observatory, & especially the basement laboratory, as she kept her most dangerous experiments down there.
Niava blinks, confused, & reminds her mother that this is a house. It doesn't have any towers or observatories. “But sure mom, I'll stay out of the creepy basement…” “...Well, your father & I will be out of cell service for the next few days as we're traveling, but after that, just call us if anything explodes! Hah! Hah, hah! Hmm. Ok, We'll be back to check on you in 2 weeks. Just relax, beloved. The house will take care of you & your friends. Who knows, they might even heal up better than new.”
Left alone for 2 weeks, the 3 teens begin to explore the house, & discover a structure that appears to be larger on the inside, & filled with seemingly impossible, almost magical science fiction-esque technology in no known human language. The trio manages to open a viewing portal to an alien world of beautiful verdant green “trees,” clinging to the floating debris of a destroyed planet. There they lock eyes with an extremely attractive but not quite human being, who they assume has to be an elf. They try, but are unable to communicate with this being verbally. Just as the viewing port begins to glitch, & is about to shut down, its power drained after 2 decades of neglect, the alien elf throws a large fruit overhand through the portal like a football, & a living furby attaches itself at the last second, making it through & into the cottage alive.
Once in the house, the furby eats the fruit, & begins to run amok, bouncing around & scandalizing the 3 cats & shiba inu dog. Later it sneaks outside & poops the seeds from the fruit into the yard, right next to an arched trellis, where they sprout & begin to grow. They go unnoticed by the humans, as they spend the next few days chasing the alien creature as it slingshots around the house. The resulting vine eventually blooms, & forms a portal to the destroyed green world. When the “elf,” a member of a species Viridim called Kenrin Tamal squeezes through the vines, the 3 humans find they now each have a circle of 5 oak leaves tattooed on a different part of their skin, & they can now understand his words, as well as the furby, who he calls a “sprowlet,” a shapeshifting psychic pest, but sapient.
Kenrin also now has a matching circle of leaves seemingly inked on his oak brown chest. Because they “accepted” the fruit he threw, & he then used its blooming flowers to travel to their plane, he explains that they're all now magically bound in a sort of a pact… kind of like a mutual traveler's visa. He assures them it's temporary & breakable. The leaves represent each of them; Kenrin, Kitta, Niava, Mias, & the Sprowlet. He offers to take them back to his plane, where he tells them about the Sanguarathi Empire, who tried to destroy his planet, Viridros. But now they live on floating islands connected by rope bridges & travel by airship.
Kenrin briefly explains how they handle physical disability, assuring them that Mias & Kitta won't be left behind, even if he has to carry them. But the Viridim have many creative means to use magic as an adaptive device.
Kenrin then notices Sanguarathi tech inside the house, & gets really worried. He wants to warn his people, & Niava wants to find out what her mother has been hiding, so the trio decide to go with him to find out more… & because an alien planet full of hot hippy tree spirit people with lower gravity after a terrible injury sounds amazing. Especially for 2 girls with hypermobility. I'm envious. I want to go to Viridros :(
...& that's what I have so far. I think it's time I start making the actual comic. If it was a book, of course I'd still be in the workshopping phase, but it's going to be serialized, & it's going to grow along with me as I become a better artist, so I've just been struggling to get to a point where I could start drawing page 1. I think I'm almost there. I just need to polish all the character designs & come up with the script & thumbnails for chapter 1.
I think the overall plan is to have the teens begin finding the secret locations inside the house & the 12 keys Ly'lath forged to rip reality asunder. They each have some more minor surface magic that can be used for mischief. The keys will probably unlock something bigger eventually all put together, so some sacrifice will have to be made. Maybe to bring magic back to Homo Sapiens, as we don't seem particularly magical compared to the other 2 variants we've seen so far, Homo Sanguarathi, & Homo Viridim. Or maybe that's how Niava will defeat the nanobots cursing the moon of Aevrim & making the Sanguarathi people disappear when they use their magic. I'm honestly comfortable leaving that up till later.
Sooo yeah, the premise is 3 teenagers, traumatized by the accident & injury that I experienced 21 years ago, except they have each other 🥰 They're then left alone in a crazy science fiction smart house to recover, & they quickly find out that magic is real, aliens exist (& they're hot 😍) & they need to arm themselves with tools, protection, knowledge, & allies, & they need to do it fast. Old enemies are returning, & humanity is facing a brand new evolution. 🗝🗝🗝
