wrote a little something ab everlark! set during the epilogue, just a drabble about what could’ve happened while katniss and peeta grew back together!
“no, peeta. i’ve never been scared of you. not even after…”
they both know what she’s talking about. she doesn’t need to say it. he doesn’t know how she’s not scared of him after what he did. she had every right to be.
“oh. what are you scared of then?”
she takes a deep breath and it all comes tumbling out of her mouth before she can even process what she’s saying
“i’m scared that you don’t love me anymore.. at least not like you did. it took me so long to figure out i loved you, and now.. i don’t even know if you love me.”
of all the things he was expecting her to say.. that was not one of them.
the room falls silent with both of them staring into each other’s eyes trying to figure out what to say next.
why would he love her? after he was rescued and he tried to kill her, he yelled hurtful words at her and she couldn’t even be angry because he saw her for who she really was. a monster.
she was the reason his family’s dead. the reason he was tortured..
but she’s also the reason he fought so damn hard to stay alive when all he wanted to do was die. through all of pain and suffering.. he thought of the first time he ever saw katniss everdeen.. and he fell in love with her that same day and every day since then.
“katniss, i have loved you since the day i heard you sing in that beautiful dress with your hair in two braids instead of one. i loved you even when i was supposed to hate you. i fought against my own mind to get back to you. i will always come back to you.”
she should’ve known there wasn’t a bone in his body that couldn’t love her with everything he had.. even if his mind was telling him different.
katniss lifts her head to meet his glassy eyes with her own tear filled eyes as he steps closer to her, opens his arms and she immediately steps into them.
she buries her head into the crook of his neck feeling embarrassed for ever thinking he didn’t love her anymore. she never believed she could ever be loved as much as peeta loves her..
she’ll probably doubt his love for her for the rest of their lives but he’ll be right there reassuring her that he loves her more than he ever thought was possible.
peeta puts his finger underneath her chin and gently lifts her head to meet his eyes. he puts his forehead to hers.
“i love you, and i will reassure you as many times as you need.” he says with a small smile.
“i love you too.. so much.” she says.. her voice almost breaking. she’ll never be able to put into words just how much she loves him.. she doesn’t have to. he knows. and words are more peeta’s area of expertise anyways.
she looks up into his eyes with awe. she doesn’t know what she did to deserve him. she used to think haymitch was right, that she could live a hundred lifetimes and never deserve him…
but maybe just maybe after everything they’ve been through, she does deserve him in this lifetime and even a thousand more.
