In “A Girl Worth Fighting For” in Mulan, Chi-Fu claims to have a girl back home that’s unlike any other. Yao responds under his breath that the only girl who would love Chi-Fu is his mother, to his great offense. Watching this as a child, I assumed Yao was calling Chi-Fu a liar in the great my-girlfriend-is-from-Canada tradition, but looking back now, we know marriages are arranged in this culture from the matchmaker scene. A man of Chi-Fu’s influence with the emperor, presumed wealth given his position, and obvious age would certainly have been married by now to a woman considered highly desirable by the values of the society, as described in “Honor to Us All.”

Chi-Fu then is definitely not lying about having a girl back home unlike any other, which everyone there would know, including Yao. So Yao isn’t calling him a liar; he’s saying Chi-Fu’s wife doesn’t love him, which I would argue is a far more savage burn.
