something something extremely sexy when magic users resort to physical violence. yeah i have the power of god and anime on my side but i also have THESE HANDS. i cast Punch You In The Face. i take my magic staff through which i channel the vast energies of the elements and the cosmos and i cast Severe Concussion And Skull Fracture. casting time for xenoglossy too long, chose the quicker route of Stab You In The Throat.
YOOOO manic breakdown POSTPONED LOOK AT THIS THING
the kowari....
just found out about this cute little birdy and i am in love
from the above-linked ebird.org:
Anis are bizarre, coal-black cuckoos with long floppy tails and unique, curiously tall, flattened bills. Groove-billed occurs in a variety of open and semi-open habitats in tropical lowlands and foothills, typically staying low in shrubs and grasses. Gregarious and not particularly graceful; usually seen crashing around awkwardly in small groups.
oh my god
groove billed anis are a hilarious cuckoo situation where they ended up laying their eggs in one another’s nests instead of anyone else’s. they hang out together in groups of up to five pairs until a nest gets built (sometimes by committee, sometimes they just hang around hopefully until someone does it all on their own) then they start sneaking over and laying an egg in at a time. the females who lay for the first time will sometimes flip prior eggs out of the nest like ‘oh i KNOW this one isn’t mine! away it goes’ but eventually everyone’s laid a couple eggs in there and is stuck with the mutual hostage situation. then they take turns incubating until all the kids hatch and everyone pitches in on feeding them, because no one knows which of the kids are theirs so they all might as well.
they also like to do a team handshake where they clump up and mutually make a low bubbling noise together, to signal group affiliation. go team!
Also their eggs are incredibly beautiful. They’re a very pretty blue color, but covered by a white chalky outer layer that is easily scratched off, so they end up in various stages of in-between.

A Personal Ranking to Different Ways Spec Fic Handle Languages
Everyone speaks "Common", which is the normal, default-language (probably associated with humans), with each other species/race having their own [weird sounding] languages At best, basic and functional. At worst, speaks to some really euro/Anglo-centric perspectives on how language works. Fine for your personal D&D game, but both unrealistic and uninteresting in terms of worldbuilding. (1/10)
Everyone just speaks the same language but no explanation is given as to why Again, basic and functional. Makes very little sense unless you're in a very small setting, so you'd think I'd dock that for being unrealistic. But this says 'this story doesn't have the scope to handle translation logistics' and I respect that honesty. 3/10
Earth (or future Earth or AU Earth) where everyone just speaks different real world languages By default, the most realistic! Perfectly respectable. Can be very easily used to explore the real-life politics of language. But by dint of being realistic, also a little boring, though it's ultimately all in execution. (5/5, +/- 2 depending)
Scientifically-created perfect instant universal translator For when you need your cast of international/intergalactic characters to I appreciate this one for giving me a willing suspension of belief for how all these characters can understand each other. However, introduces a new belief to suspend because i Do Not Believe we could invent this under real world physics. I find this fun but think writers could get weirder about this one. (6/10)
Magically-or-psychically-powered (etc) perfect instant universal translator The last one, but make it magic. Which sure is just a rebrand in the techno babble but works better for me. Again, I think writers could get weirder (6.5/10)
Characters speak "Common" as a lingua franca, deconstruction remix Okay, now we're cooking. You're actually exploring what would cause a so-called "common" language means, the history that would cause it to take root, and the interspecies/racial/group politics and tensions that exist. Fun! (7/10)
Look at me, I made a conlang! Okay, cool, impressive. but like... did you do anything with it? (7.5/10)
I made a conlang (or conlangs PLURAL) and it's relevant to both characters and plot! Damn, fair enough man. Respect. Tolkien would be proud. however, i personally am jack shit at languages, so if it's relevant enough to the plot I need to understand it, I'll struggle. it's not you, it's me. (8/10)
Characters speak many languages in this setting, which is a major political theme My personal catnip. It's like speculative linguistics and anthropology and politics and all this bullshit i love. <3 <3 (9/10)
Speculative evolution LANGUAGE EDITION you made an alien and it's weird and it has a language but it's not like any HUMAN language because the species doesn't have a mouth or it's psychic or it communicates purely through colour. my absolute fave. (10/10) [disclaimer: this is just my opinion not objective fact. i am not a linguistic i just think this stuff is Neat. i want to hear other peoples' opinions on this too]

Just don't have any world-building.
Where are we starting in this game? How should I know? I'm not a scientist.
looking through past ideas and enjoying the combo of comments on this one from @dominyk9 and @silelda
Religion in fantasy worlds: Everyone believes the exact same things about Green Nature Goddess and has official rituals for her that are the same everywhere
Religion irl: Technically it’s heresy for me to worship this skeleton but my spiritual advisor said that it’s legit so I’m gonna keep giving it offerings of yogurt
Religion in fantasy worlds: We’ve gotta pour water over this statue or else the god will get angry
Religion irl: We’ve gotta pour water over this statue? Why? Idk man that’s just what you do. Just do it alright.
Religion in fantasy worlds: These are the rules. The rules are law. Nobody can break the rules.
Religion irl: Okay you say that there are “rules” but how exactly are we defining “rules” here? Like is a suggestion a rule? How are we defining suggestion? No come back. Listen. Are we going by nuance in the original language or are translations fine or-
High control religions/cults recruiting in fantasy worlds: Join us! For we shall all eat the moon! This is a legitimate position to have!
High control religions/cults recruiting irl: We have free snacks. That shirt looks sooo cute on you btw. What, you heard that we wanna eat the moon? The media is always telling lies about us you know. We may have some unorthodox opinions about the moon but, tell you what. Come get some snacks, make some new friends, maybe chat about the moon a bit. See what you think. We’ve got pizza.
Religions in fantasy worlds: We must make a sacrifice to appease the gods! *draws up a sacrifice circle and completely destroys the sacrifice*
Religions irl: We must make a sacrifice to appease the gods! *has a communal barbecue*
messed up that you can literally be better and nicer in every way and the adventuring party will still be like "waaa its a shapeshifter waaaa the real whatstheirface would never say that" like ok maybe i am a picture perfect copy of your friend that i imprisoned beneath the earth and replaced when you werent looking. so what. maybe they were a cunt. maybe i thought youd appreciate an improved version of your friend. with awesome eldritch tendrils.
When the story has a sequence where the characters each get personally tortured with their exact personalized greatest fears and traumas
I'm just saying, if you're going to worldbuild magic being a "raw, primal force, akin to and interweaving with nature itself" you gotta explain to me why animals don't use it
I know the normal answer is "they just aren't smart enough for it" but idk I've seen enough media where a character uses a spell in a moment of brain-off panic ilI feel like animals could probably stumble into a spell or two like, accidentally
Also how funny would it be to see a completely normal regular bear cast magic missile outta nowhere
Also there is no way ravens wouldn't figure out spells, tbh
They're smart fuckin birds, I believe in them
Either through observing or just figuring shit out ravens could 100% learn how to cast spells I'm sure of it
Dogs can also cast Magic Missile but every time they do the projectile is shaped like a bone or a stick and they chase after it

I feel like a very important part of worldbuilding for any universe with a magic system is asking yourself ‘how would people use this to do crime?’
One thing I love putting in my fantasy and scifi that so many stories I read don't have is superstitions that are just wrong. Astrology type shit. Wizards being assigned an elemental type that's supposed to determine their personality just because that's how it's been done for centuries because ages ago people believed in it and these days people are like "no of course it's a silly superstition haha" but still glance knowingly at your metal type tattoo when you're being headstrong. Societies who believe that the stars determine your destiny because see, this kid was born under the star that indicated intelligence so we pushed her in school and got her special tutors so she could live up to her potential and look, she IS more academically successful than her peers born under other stars! People talking about their religion in the far future and all the side characters are like "that sounds like fucking nonsense" and they're like "no it's TRUE" and the audience is like 'no that's nonsense'. I love inventing shit for characters to just be totally wrong about.
Green Wanderings 3/16/26

I've also been looking ahead at more things to work on and share, including the RUNE realm and Ex Materia (scifi Forged in the Dark).
Major Plane : Outlands (N)
Call it the "Plane of Balance" and you'll get an eyeroll from the natives. The Outlands is the 'biggest' outer plane, and its opinion of Good and Evil are covered by "shut up we have real things to care about." Sure there are a few chessmasters playing the great game and keeping the universe from swaying towards one cause or another, but even a lot of the big players think they're off their rockers. Most of the Outlands is focused on their own interests and problems.
Not a lot is written about the Outlands because... well it's not too different than a Prime Material World. Cities, Wildlands, and Rural chunks abound. And the people aren't actively hostile, but don't rush to help everyone they meet either. Most petitioners got here by being average, and they're keeping that drive. And the exceptional characters tend to enjoy not constantly dealing with interruptions from people with annoying alignment ideas.
Their easy retirement is handled by the plane's travel quirk. You get to your destination fastest by "minding your own business." This sounds obvious but it's not just the lost time from going out of your way to help and harm others. The Outlands guides people who interfere with others towards other groups of busybodies, and people who leave well enough alone closer to their goal. So those looking to sell stuff find those who show interest in buying, those looking to cause mayhem and Evil find crusaders looking to battle for Good, and everyone else deals with the other groups as little as possible.
Gods in the Outlands : The Gods around here are usually focused on something. Nature, Knowledge, Magic, Commerce, Crafting, and they have a realm devoted to doing that. Sometimes realms will intersect, but usually they have something they want to do, and they do it. Everyone else can either help or leave them alone.
Adventures in the Outlands : Adventuring in the Outlands is similar to adventuring in the prime. There's less demons/angels and more 'annoying monsters' but 'old ruins made by cults/wizards,' still litter the place. The big difference is that it's not limited to your singular prime world. No, some Dark Sun rain cult might be a couple miles down river of a Steam Wizards research lab, kept apart by the laser crocodiles until some fairies captured them for chariot races. Things are weird in the Outlands, just not Good or Evil weird.
There's also occasionally problems that pop in. Most of the proselytizing and corruption nonsense happens in the Gate Towns. But sometimes someone gets it into their head to bring the alignment conflicts into the Outlands proper. At which point it's a problem that needs to be solved. And the high ups are willing to use everything from asking nice to murder to solve it. Handing adventurers a bag of money is a time honored tradition, and those that perform well will find other contracts awaiting.

dnd setting where dungeons are as ubiquitous as roman ruins are in parts of europe
"i was just trying to dig a pond in my yard when i hit some kinda puzzle door, now i gotta get the adventurers guild involved. they say its gonna take at least 3 months to explore the whole thing, can u believe that?"
Thats 13th Age. Dungeons emerge from the earth like mushrooms after a rainstorm. They grow and spread as though alive.
The underdark in the setting keeps going down and down. At one point you hit the Storeroom. Its a giant planet spanning warehouse containing everything needed to populated dungeons. Millions of wood door, billions of torches packed into crates, ensless rows of traps yet installed and evil temples and shrines neatly arrayed.
And somewhere below, in the center of the world, dwells the master of all dungeons.
13th Age is an RPG written by one of the lead writers of 4E and a designer from both sides of the edition war, but with less of the jank in

Conflict Plane : Carcerai (NE/CE)
This place is a shithole. Sometimes literally. Caught in the Blood War, with larger Evil groups trying to take chunks of the plane from them, the petitioners of Carcerai decided to make their home plane the worst place fucking possible. To pile up the filth, mud, and shit until no one would want to live here. The only reason there are places that aren't filthy is because they don't want the filth demons to have anywhere nice either.
Stuck between the Abyss and the Grey Wastes, Carcerai is the place where those who are between pure indulgence in their dark whims, and a drive to enforce their unholy will on reality. And that lack of conviction has generally left them in a bad spot. Bullied by everyone around them, they retaliate with self destructive sabotage. And so Carcerai is a place no one wants to be.
Because of that it's a great place to shove things or people you don't like. The locals will gladly help lock up anyone who gets sent here. If anything you might have to bribe them to not torture the living and break the inanimate. Then again most things and people sent here are too difficult to easily damage.
Gods in Carcerai : Not many Gods want to be here. Usually those that end up stuck in this place are part of a Pantheon that shipped them down here, and their primary goal is to get out and get revenge. Their realms tend to be less miserable than most chunks of the plane, but visitors will likely be conscripted into the escape attempt.
Adventures in Carcerai : No one wants to go to this shithole, but there's a lot of treasure down here. A lot. As well as a lot of forgotten prisoners and lost souls. Which means there's all sorts of rich folk willing to shell out a lot of gold for those who can stomach digging through the muck for those items. As well as many weapons buried away by those who wanted their weaknesses sealed. Just be warned, the locals are every bit as evil as any demon or yugoloth, and much angrier.
This shithole is also part of the Blood War. No one wants to be here, but it's the only easy path between the Abyss and the Gray Waste, so someone's gotta take supplies through here. And that means fortresses and waypoints. Ones that have to be defended from both the locals and enemy action.
