On view in The Library of Helen DeWitt part of "The Library Vaccine" at Artists Space, NY (Sept 25 - Nov 16) "The Library Vaccine" presents few collections of books in order to sample art's distinctive relationship to the book form in its singularity, and in its states of reproduction, distribution and accumulation. Among them is the library of writer Helen DeWitt, who since the late 1990s has addressed the governance of language by social machines. Juan Capistrán works in sculpture, painting, video, photography, drawing, installation, performance, and sound—whichever method best serves the specific project. American artist Richard Prince's current show at Gagosian Gallery in New York, "New Portraits," features 37 images taken from other peoples' Instagram accounts, which have been enlarged to roughly 4 x 6 feet and printed on canvas. This process – take others' images (created in various media) and then exhibit them as his own – fits perfectly with his long-standing approach to art-making. But what he does in the comments field adds layers on top of the disconcerting images. This time, he’s not using anonymous advertising and magazine pictures; he’s going right to the source to people he can and does communicate with. They know he’s looking. Tala Madani’s paintings, drawings, and stop-motion animations construct grotesque worlds and fantastical scenes in which the boneheadedness of men reaches a fever pitch. Madani tends to depict her male protagonists as disemboweled, humiliated, and pathetic entities, quickly rendered figures that leak fluids, engage in curious homosocial rites of passage, and inflict intolerable pain upon one another. #TalaMadani #Grotesque #StopMotion #PMxPostMeridiem

Pablo Guardiola, from "Maintenance Yard," on view at Romer Young Gallery, San Francisco (9/5 to 10/11, 2014). Through photographic and sculptural metaphors, Guardiola gives new meaning to objects, and weaves new stories. "Maintenance Yard" explores the 'markers of geography through historical figures Francis Drake and George Dewey, plotting story lines from the Bay Area to the Caribbean and back, emblematic of Guardiola’s own personal trajectory' (Hotchkiss).
