Something happened in the void sea: maybe they got scared, and tried to swim out. But instead, they simply drowned. Depths is gone because they're trying to forget it, destroy the source of their regrets. We never really speak to the ascended iterators, it's Saint talking to themselves, lamenting their own fears, begging themself to WAKE UP.

and it all comes to the final point, when they swim upwards, cowering from transcendence. when it all faded to white, and the fluid filled their lungs as they desperately tried to find air, and they deformed into something they'll never be able to understand.
