Wild Cats That Look Like Domestic Cats!
European wild cat (Felis silvestris), sometimes erroneously listed as the ancestor of the domestic cat:
African wild cat (Felis lybica), the actual ancestor of the domestic cat:
Black-footed cat (Felis nigripes), it may be cute and very small but it has a 60% success rate when it comes to hunting, which is more than any other cat:
Sand cat (Felis margarita), this is kind of loose, as they’re basically the Felid version of the fennec fox:
Chinese mountain cat (Felis):
Geoffrey’s cat (Leopardus geoffroyi):
Leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis):
And rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus):
Don’t try to pet them! I’m sured they’d love a box to sit in, though.

Mutual interest - With shark diving ever-increasing in popularity, I have seen an alarming increase of people flipping sharks over to trigger tonic immobility for the sake of a belly-rub shot. Tonic immobility should not be induced for anyone's entertainment, and it is not the only way to get close to sharks. This picture demonstrates a shark that has glided into a diver's waiting lap, an interaction that has likely resulted from many dives and many instances of building trust ; from this position, the shark has the ability to swim away at any time. It's moments like these that truly capture the idea that a shark's trust can be earned, and interactions should not be forced.

grain being taken from third world countries and fed to livestock causing world hunger just isn’t a thing that’s happening
disclaimer yes monocultures are bad and we shouldn’t be growing so much corn and soy, and we need to invest in the agricultural infrastructure of poorer countries, but North America and Europe by and large grow their own feed and don’t import it
bug boys
It’s amazing how much we can see ourselves in some of the other ape species and how much they likely see of themselves in us.
everyone in the comments going “haha two apes looking at a bug...”
bitch you’re looking too

Do wind turbines kill birds? Yes. And we do need to find a way to mitigate that. But outdoor cats are the overwhelming leader in causes of bird deaths.
Usually when I post something on Tumblr I expect that there will be many people who simply don’t read the post and make a comment anyway. Usually I ignore this and move on, but I just can’t for this one.
1) The original post was because someone had commented on my post about outdoor cats saying until wind turbines stopped killing birds, they wouldn’t keep their cat inside.
2) This post clearly shows that wind turbines are NOT a huge killer of birds. The number of replies to this post stating that wind turbines shouldn’t be the focus of this clearly didn’t look at the graphic or read the article. Wind turbines aren’t the focus-outdoor cats are.
3) Turbines do kill some birds, the research doesn’t argue otherwise. There are also other killers of birds and of course they are important. But by a very large margin outdoor cats are the largest cause of bird mortality out of all of the other modalities studied.
In this same vein of course we need to do all we can to make turbines safer as well as the other factors listed. But we can’t (or won’t) change our entire electric grid so birds don’t die. Neither will buildings be redesigned or have all of their glass replaced with bird safe glass. Nor will people stop driving cars. There simply isn’t enough money or desire to change these things. But keeping cats inside literally costs nothing and is easy enough that anyone can do it.
4) I guess I just don’t understand the apathy demonstrated by some commenters. They don’t care about birds. They don’t care about clean energy. They don’t care about fossil fuels. They don’t care about cats. So why exactly are you even commenting? Just to be trolls I suppose is the correct answer.
5) Finally, once again I don’t understand why people don’t want their cats to live long, healthy lives. Outdoor cats suffer horrible diseases and are killed by predators, cars, people, etc. I cannot tell you the number of cat owners who I have told over the years that they really need to keep their cat inside and they give all kinds of reasons why they just refuse to do; these same owners are very upset when I have to tell them someone brought their dead cat into the vet and the only way we knew it was theirs was by the microchip number.
And yes, I realize there will always be all kinds of horrible responses. Some of it purely for the troll factor and some of it because some people truly are just rotten in their very core.

Making worlds is not limited to humans. We know that beavers re-shape streams as they make dams, canals, and lodges; in fact, all organisms make ecological living places, altering earth, air, and water. Without the ability to make workable living arrangements, species would die out. In the process, each organism changes everyone’s world. Bacteria made our oxygen atmosphere, and plants help maintain it. Plants live on land because fungi made soil by digesting rocks. As these examples suggest, world-making projects can overlap, allowing room for more than one species. Humans, too, have always been involved in multispecies world making. Fire was a tool for early humans not just to cook but also to burn the landscape, encouraging edible bulbs and grasses that attracted animals for hunting. Humans shape multispecies worlds when our living arrangements make room for other species. This is not just a matter of crops, livestock, and pets. Pines, with their associated fungal partners, often flourish in landscapes burned by humans; pines and fungi work together to take advantage of bright open spaces and exposed mineral soils. Humans, pines, and fungi make living arrangements simultaneously for themselves and for others: multispecies worlds.
