i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

stop misconstruing what i stated above in favor of skimming wikipedia and indulging in media from 50 years ago. read cultural and religious texts. listen to archived lectures about historical subjects. pick up a beginners guide to engineering or computer science. listen to an audiobook of classic literature. study language and anthropology. download a pdf about hydrology or agriculture or manufacturing or demographics for your city. get very very curious about logistics. analyze foreign films from a generation before you were born. investigate medical and biological sciences. educate yourself on philosophy and art. practice mathematics even though it's hard. discover an academic journal for a subject you like. start a book club to discuss political theory. we will persevere through the anti-intellectual information age together

i’ve started looking at weight and health the way i look at class and income and it really puts a lot of things into a new perspective.

let me explain: in america at least, the lower class have significantly worse health outcomes, even when accounting for other factors. just being poor is enough to make your overall health worse. we don’t know that being fat makes your health directly worse, like the data just isn’t there, but for a moment, pretend it does.

imagine going to the doctor with a health problem and the doctor looking at your chart and saying well, this problem will be less severe if you go up an income bracket. have you thought about becoming rich? it would really help. start by saving a little money every month.

ridiculous, right?? very few people successfully go from working class to rich, it just doesn’t happen on a large scale in society. maybe for a time you pick up some overtime hours, spend a little beyond your means, and appear rich. but eventually you burn out, your car needs to be repaired, and you return to being working class.

we do have this data: only some people can successfully lose large amounts of weight, and only a tiny fraction of people who lose that weight actually keep it off for more than a year. telling people to lose weight for their health is just absurd because they almost certainly can’t do it any more than they can double their income for their health.

and yet i see it everywhere. a little poster in my work breakroom tells me to improve my blood pressure by losing weight! a psa on the radio says you need to take care of your heart by losing weight! we can’t even conclusively prove that weight is the cause rather than just correlated with a lot of these problems but here it is offered anyway: have you tried being rich?

You hit the nail on the head. A lot of people tend to try and invalidate fatphobia as a form of oppression by saying its not an immutible quality like race or sexuality or gender. The old “you can lose weight, i can’t become white/straight/cis” argument.

That’s because fatphobia is a lot more like classism; i.e. it’s a form of bigotry that is only TECHNICALLY changeable. They’re both seen as a lot more changeable than they actually are, for all the reasons you’ve listed.

People are so harsh on Black cinema, in this really bizarre way. It's almost like they're unnerved by all the casual Blackness they're seeing in these films, but they don't realize it or care to unpack why — so they hyperfocus on the TINIEST details at the expense of more relevant shit like plot or themes, OR they have these wild, reaching complaints that make zero sense to anyone who like. Watched the film normally. Because TELL ME how I just saw someone saying they wished I Love Boosters "had more fashion" in it. Like really. I Love Boosters. The film about fashion designers stealing clothes and making clothes and selling clothes and pulling heists at fashion shows and clothes stores? The film where they have different outfits in each new scene? That I Love Boosters?? THAT'S the movie that didn't have enough fucking fashion for you??!

a lot of trans women I've met who initially discuss enjoying topping their partners have, over time, after getting space from the expectation to top, said that they've stopped enjoying topping and no longer want to do it

certainly a lot of trans women genuinely enjoy topping, but I think it's a lot fewer than many people imagine. we just aren't being given the space to genuinely explore what we want, often thanks to the presence of enlightened level 100 queers who see us as naive fools for thinking we might not want to top. how simple we are for not considering that Women Can Top Too! it's actually more radical for women to top! 😁

i actually think it's scary that we seem to be forgetting what regular human beings look like and that in some cases it's being deliberately accelerated by incels and their esoteric mythology of appearance now that they have the cultural microphone. it's scary that i can watch a movie from like 1991 and be like "oh if this woman was cast as a leading lady today it'd be a culture war outrage session about ugly women being shoved in our faces"

this particular example makes me so sad bc I can tell you firsthand I've had to explain to multiple cisgender men that they're not freaks for having gynecomastia and that it's actually extremely common. like it is so common that about half of all cis men experience it at some point over the course of their life. but we're so fixated on these imaginary and increasingly impossible ideals that we convince ourselves normal variations in human anatomy are rare freak differences that need to be changed to fit that ideal. obviously this hits women way more than men but in general it's like we're all tricking ourselves into a reality that doesn't exist and demanding it of each other
