Out of curiosity and to know where the majority of people stand, how many people have canceled their discord nitro subscription in response to Discord’s age verification?
"I don't want to switch to yet another platform that will repeat it all again in another two years" nor do I! I don't want to leave the 5+ years of chat history I have with my friends. I don't want to go somewhere the people I haven't spoken to in years who want to reach out can't find me. I don't want to get used to a new UI that's probably worse than discord's.
But I also can't just throw away my privacy. I can't just give my face to people who will turn it over to hostile law enforcement the second they're asked to(that's if it doesn't end up in a data breach first). I can't just accept that the chat program I use to text ny friends is collecting enough information about me to accurately guess my age, and who knows what else.
And for the people saying "well it only affects NSFW stuff so you don't even have to verify if you don't want to": 1) I use discord for NSFW stuff, many people do. 2) Why is that not important? 3) What is the definition of NSFW you're using? Is it the same as discord's will be in a year from now? What's stopping discord from including depictions of trans people(and lets be realistic, trans women specifically) in their definition of adult content like tumblr does?
And no, you're not "doing nothing" by leaving a hostile platform. The only thing a company like discord cares about is money. The two ways you make them money is by paying for nitro, or by inflating usage numbers they show to investors at advertisers. Leaving is the only way to tell them "no, I am not okay with this, you are not going to make money from me". Staying says "i don't actually care enough to stop giving you money".
Sorry, kind of a rant, saw a post that probably pissed me off more than it should. Was gonna go into how platforms like matrix are less vulnerable to stuff like this because of decentralization, but don't have the energy for it.
DISCORD HAS POSTPONED AMERICAN ID VERIFICATION UNTIL MID 2026. DO NOT LET UP THE PRESSURE. KEEP REPOSTING AND PROTESTING
Though the pressure has certainly done something, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES FORGET THEY HAVE DONE THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE. THEY MUST LEARN THAT WE WON’T LAY DOWN AND TAKE IT
Just because Discord isn't partnered with Persona anymore doesn't mean the age verification crap is off the table. Do not pay a dime to them until we have confirmation that they won't touch this again.

The company added that 90% of users won’t need to verify their age and will be able to keep using Discord as usual.
Discord delays global rollout of age verification after backlash
Feb 24, 2026
Discord no longer plans to roll out age verification globally in March and is delaying the launch until the second half of 2026, the company announced Tuesday.
Discord had faced heavy backlash from users earlier this month after it announced that all users would be put into a “teen-appropriate experience” by default until they were verified as adults.
The company clarified on Tuesday that 90% of users won’t need to verify their age and will be able to keep using Discord as usual, since most don’t engage with age-restricted content and the platform’s internal safety systems can already determine the age of many adult users. These internal systems work by looking at signals like how long an account has existed, whether the user has a payment method on file, and what types of servers they’re in.
“Let me be upfront: we knew this rollout was going to be controversial,” Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy wrote in the blog post announcing the change. “Any time you introduce something that touches identity and verification, people are going to have strong feelings. Rightfully so. In hindsight, we should have provided more detail about our intentions and how the process works.”
“The way this landed, many of you walked away thinking we’re requiring face scans and ID uploads from everyone just to use Discord,” he continued. “That’s not what’s happening, but the fact that so many people believe it tells us we failed at our most basic job: clearly explaining what we’re doing and why.”
Discord says that people who are part of the 10% of users who do need to verify their age will be given options to do so. Previously, Discord had stated that users could only verify their age by either completing a facial age estimation or submitting an ID to Discord’s vendor partners. Now Discord says that before expanding age verification worldwide, it plans to introduce additional verification methods, including the option to verify using a credit card.
“If you choose not to verify, here’s exactly what happens: you keep your account, your servers, your friends list, your DMs, and voice chat,” Vishnevskiy said in the post. “The only thing that changes is you won’t be able to access age-restricted content or change certain default safety settings designed to protect teens. Nothing else about your Discord experience changes.”
The company also plans to publish information on its website about each verification vendor and their data practices, and clearly identify which vendor is being used. In addition, it now says it will only work with vendors that perform the age-verification process entirely on the user’s device.
The change around vendors also comes as Discord faced backlash for listing Persona, which is backed by an investment firm co-founded by Peter Thiel, as one of its partners in age verification. Thiel is chairman and co-founder of Palantir, which has attracted controversy for its work with U.S. immigration enforcement and other federal surveillance programs. Persona also attracted criticism from users for its use of third-party data and partnerships with governments.
Discord is trying to distance itself from Persona and told The Verge yesterday that it “ran a limited test of Persona in the UK where age assurance had previously launched and that test has since concluded.”
Discord also faced backlash for its age-verification plans because it had disclosed last October that around 70,000 users may have had sensitive data, such as their government ID photos, exposed after hackers breached a third-party vendor that the platform used for age-related appeals. Discord says it no longer works with the vendor involved in this breach.
Fucking hate it when you’re rallying people to boycott an app or service because they adopted the Fuck You Forever policy and some motherfucker peeks out from between the boot treads and says some shit like “I get the sentiment, BUT…”
Like do you not understand that they’re going to sell your face to an ethnostate so it can hunt you down at the first sniff of rebellion on you, and money is the only thing these greedy corporate fucks ever listen to?
And yes, they’ll probably still do it under the table anyway! They don’t give a fuck about it! But that’s not the point! The point is to make sure people don’t trust this shit, to know it’s fucking wrong to be bullied and/or tricked into compliance with a surveillance state, to be fucking angry that their right to privacy is being toyed with by the worst human beings alive, and that they should never think they have to settle for it!
When you undermine the sentiment, you are telling people they should just lay down and take it, like you did. That doesn’t make you pragmatic. That doesn’t make you a realist. That makes you just as much a lightless void as the evil fuckers at the top of the world.
i dont want a childproofed internet i am almost 30 fucking years old. give your kid an internet safety talk and stop making it the problem of every adult on the planet every time some cryptkeeper legislator gets the brilliant idea (via conservative lobbying) to push through yet another bill gutting our access to free expression + increasing the powers of the surveillance state + lining the pockets of Big Data in the name of Protecting The Kids they wont even feed. this shit is exhausting i can’t believe we’re going to be fighting about it for the rest of my life
I don't normally get political on here, but as a Brit who's been through the chaos of the Online Safety Act - It. Does. Not. Work.
Guess what skyrocketed after the act got implemented? VPNs. I'm using a VPN 80% of the time on the internet. Not to mention that I don't even need a VPN to find a dozen dodgy porn sites that DGAF about age verification laws. 4chan still refuses to comply with age verification. Clones of Bato are already popping up.
Kids WILL find a way. The net WILL persist. Even in China, Russia - countries with insane laws around this shit, their citizens still access stuff that's banned there.
Teach your kids about online safety. Do some actual fucking parenting. Don't try and curtail people's freedom and privacy, because It. Will. Not. Work.
No one is seeing my posts and it's driving me crazy. XD
There's already people saying "I'm probably just going to give Discord my ID and face because there's nowhere else to go."
All you have to do is be patient. Leave the app for two fucking weeks. Cancel your nitro sub and leave.
The only reason this is happening is because people don't know how to boycott. The reason we don't have password sharing on Netflix anymore is because people showed Netflix that it didn't matter if they took password sharing away. The reason we're saddled with Twitter Blue is because everyone caved and bought paid features that used to be free.
And yeah, corporations have a lot of responsibility for enshittification, but they're going to keep fucking doing it if they know they can get away with it. Boycotts work, but you have to actually boycott the thing.
I boycotted Netflix for two YEARS before seeing that their average user count was increasing and that boycotting was, by the barest definition of the word, not happening.
Fighting against enshittification means sometimes you have to inconvenience yourself and take a stand. You can't just yell and expect things to get better if you don't actually try to make them better. Why would Discord stop doing this if the company knows it won't suffer in the long run? It's actually already planning to lose users and it has a strategy in mind to get them back. Because the company knows people just won't hold out.
"Where will I go to message friends then?" I don't know. And I'm very sad about that. My mental health will take a hit, and it'll suck for a long time. But like, when you think about why they want ID verification, it's very likely going straight to ICE, right? You know that, right? This isn't even a conspiracy anymore. It's just facts.
And the first person who tells me I'm fearmongering gets bashed over the entire face with the "phones aren't really listening, you idiot" conspiracy that turned out to be true.
Listen. Just try. I really need you all to just try.
If you deprive a corporation of users and money, it is 100% going to cave. It can't function without users and money.
Discord is rolling out global teen safety updates designed to create age-appropriate experiences by default.
We cannot have shit.
Fuck everyone who pushed for age verification.
These people have already been fucking hacked since implementing age verification in other places, btw.
Note: do not be a doomer on this post.
We have to fight back with all our strength. Spread awareness, contact who you can whether it be your representatives or the people running these shit holes, write letters, send faxes/emails, etc.
We only lose if we give up.
We've fought against stuff like this before and won. We can do it again.

Can't believe we're here, but especially important for fandom accounts: DO NOT link your IRL, government ID to your fandom accounts! Not ever. Not for anything.
You will feel tempted by FOMO, you will feel bullied by Discord. You will be peer pressured to the ends of the earth. Do not do it. Do not allow them full access to you, and do not let them normalize this utter horseshit. We deserve anon spaces. We deserve the internet, it's ours.
Discord is announcing enhanced teen safety features rolling out globally that reinforce its long-standing commitment to creating a safer and
Like this shit is TERRIFYING.
Cancel Nitro and tell them this is why. Shit talk these assholes in public. Ridicule them. And do not budge an inch, do not let them have you.
DISCORD IS IMPLEMENTING GLOBAL AGE VERIFICATION REQUIREMENTS. GO YELL AT THEM ABOUT IT.
Source: Discord's official statement
Ethical problems of surveillance aside, Discord cannot be trusted with your information. There was already a data breach of 70,000 users' government IDs in October of 2025.
The support email listed on Discord's website for contact does not work. Instead, flood their system via submitting support requests via this form.
Discord also has an account on X, so if you have an account you can go put them on blast over there.
Public outrage over decisions like this does work. Make your voices heard.
I can't believe I haven't seen a single other person have this take. Now that r/place is done this year, can we talk about how writing "fuck spez" on the canvas accomplishes less than nothing? Spez has shown again and again that he doesn't care about public opinion of him; all he cares about is users. Going onto r/place to contribute to writing "fuck spez" doesn't help the situation, it just gives spez the user count and the ad revenue that he wants. I swear I don't understand why I haven't seen a single other person say this anywhere. I normally lurk for the most part but I just feel like I had to finally voice this opinion. Please spread this idea if you ACTUALLY want Spez to fall.

I don’t think anyone should participate in r/place as long as the Reddit protest is still ongoing. Just don’t go on Reddit at all, it’s giving Spez unecessary power.
