The second oldest from 1907 was the IMCO company that started out designing and producing buttons for military uniforms. After World War I there wasn't much need for the buttons so the company switched to making cigarette and pipe lighters. Burley Blend Tobacco

This hearty tobacco blend originated in Ohio in the 1860's and contains a lighter colored leaf in shades of yellow and white. Rich, nutty, and light air, this type of tobacco is often used in Cigarette's produced in North America. The Plant is primarily grown in the Southeast United States, but producers also exist in Brazil, and Argentina. When smoked you can detect the sweet flavor as the Burley is cured in a blend of quality sugars to give it an almost caramel oatmeal cookie finish.

The Use of Pipe and Tobacco in Religious Ritual

While there exists a strong “anti-tobacco” sense today, that has not always been the case. For centuries tobacco and pipe smoking have been a part of many religions’ sacred practices. It is something akin to the smoke of incense that was used in the ancient Hebrew worship and is still being used in some Catholic and Orthodox worship services today.

The smoke of the incense, in the Jewish and Catholic traditions, and, the smoke of tobacco in other religious traditions represent prayers and the shadowy connection between our physical world and the spiritual world.

Among the Native Americans pipes and tobacco was used in a variety of ceremonies and settings. The pipe and tobacco themselves are considered holy. The Dakota Sioux call their “Peace Pipe” a “Calumet”. The pipes themselves represented both the male (the stem) and the female (the bowl) in their sacred act of pipe smoking.

Mayans reportedly used a primitive tubelike pipe made of reeds in their worship rituals in the early 16th century.

As far back a the 4th and 5th century B.C. Hippocrates used pipe forms and tobacco in the treating of ailments.

Interestingly, many different cultures have found pipe, tobacco and smoke to be a important part of their worship and culture. As simple as it is to put fire to tobacco in a cylindrical earthy instrument it seems to touch humans in a deep and meaningful way.

Pipe Lighters

So you've just began smoking a pipe but it seems to taste a bit like ash? This is due to a build up of ash preventing the efficient igniting of the tobacco in the pipe. Sadly this ash will always gather in the pipe but there is a solution.

Rather than giving step by step instructions to empty the entire bowl of the pipe, removing both the ash and tobacco, I will be explaining a simple method of removing the ash without heavily interrupting smoking known as 'Tamping'.

After you lit your tobacco with a pipe lighter or matches, ash will be the result as the tobacco burns.  Removing the ash with this tamp method requires you to gently nudge the ember against the tobacco that hasn't yet to burn. This method can be carried out with a pipe tool known as a tamper, as the ash becomes more dense laying upon the tobacco, simply use the tamper to gently sift and break it apart then proceed by carefully tilting the pipe and slowly tapping it out. Be sure not to do this on a hard surface as it can damage the pipe.

Tamper's are not very expensive at all and come in quite light weights. To 'Tamp' efficiently it is more important to carry out the technique well rather than relying solely upon the tool. The trick is to be profoundly gentle when carrying out this method as the aim is to do it without effecting the ember's construction.

The best time to practice the proper technique of 'Tamping' would be when you are achieving full puffs of smoke. Simply take slow and casual puffs very gently touch the ember with your tamper; wait briefly and then do it again. The repetition of this action will eventually cause it to become a force of habit.
