I found a whole bunch of knitting and crocheting patterns in some library books I checked out. Since I have to return them soon, I thought I'd document the projects I want to return to or even create inspiration for my future projects. I am posting a few patterns from Outlander Knitting edited by Kate Atherly.

Mrs. Fitz's Armwarmers Designed by Barry Klein

A big motivation for creating my own arm warmers is that I have eczema. In the past, I have tried to make arm warmers from cutting socks or wearing compression sleeves, but they are always too tight or they are itchy for me. Arm warmers are so cozy and soft and much more appealing than other options I mentioned.

I bought this a couple years ago at a local thrift shop and I just adored her! She is giving me cozy, cottage grandma vibes. She is my inspo cardigan. She sadly has a couple loose threads and fraying on the sleeves. I decided to use her as inspiration for my own creation, the Grandma Cardigan. This cardigan fits snugly on me, so I want to replicate the exact measurements, but I want to give a new floral design. I love most of the flowers in the front panels, so I may replicate/ create something similar to them. The back panel is beautiful, but just not to my tastes. In the Grandma Cardigan, I hope to create a new, magical floral design of my own creation.

Here is a closeup of the cabling done on the bottom hem and is also replicated on the sleeves.

I know the inspo cardigan was knitted, but I am better at crocheting and still learning how to knit. Here is the work I have done far. All the panels and sleeves will be done with slip stitch ribbing. I used Sugar ‘n Cream yarn in the color Ecru (weight: Medium 4). This yarn is definitely bulkier, sturdier, and thicker than in the inspo cardigan, but to me, that means it will also last longer! The Grandma Cardigan will also drape differently on the body as well, but I do not think this will be an issue for me.

As you can see, I used a different cable pattern for the cuff and bottom hem for the Grandma Cardigan. The stitches shown are lark’s foot track stitches and intertwining cable stitches.

Shiny and ruffly, but fast fashion and poor quality. I didn’t do enough research when buying this garment, but now I have her. The fabric is thin and snags on the smallest thing. However, this corset is so beautiful to look at, I could never throw her away.

I decided to add some embroidery to bring her to life. After being worn 3 times, the boning started ripping into the fabric and creating holes. I darned all the stretched out and torn fabric- below is an example. I darned using 100% cotton embroidery thread that was slightly lighter than the original fabric, but the closest thing I could find at the store.

The fabric started to tear out of the corset’s grommets (the metal things), so I secured it from tearing and unraveling using a backstitch. To assure the grommets stay attached to the corset, I sewed them to the newly backstitched fabric and now adds a softer, complimentary look. The exposed metal grommets were horrible looking.

I did not take pictures for the next steps I did, but add it in my next update. To add a visual flair and extra security, I backstitched around all the grommets.

The serged ruffling on the bottom flared portion started to also come apart on the ends, so I zigzag stitched over them to secure them in place. I bought a 100% cotton thread that matched the original thread used when serged.
