Evil Is Like Evil Does

Wasn’t the whole superhero thing supposed to be bright and fun and campy? That was always how it was in the comics, right? The near-constant stream of trauma never left scars, never broke anyone. Because they were superheroes, and they could handle it, they could go back to work or school the morning after almost dying and be perfectly fine.

So why couldn’t Kim do that?

Why had she spent every single free moment she had in the pit, beating the hell out of herself more than the simulations she kept making Alpha run? Why had it been getting steadily worse? When had she started waking up every morning (assuming she slept at all) in pain, and when had she started believing that was normal? Truthfully, she wasn’t sure, but she had no intentions of stopping. So when she heard footsteps, felt the presence of another person, she simply shook it off.
