"Just a walk in the park, Kazansky."

in the middle of the war, somewhere in Afghanistan, Maverick is finally sent home. its leave, but it doesnt seem like leave. after all, hes just going to come back to this sandy shitbox hell.

but he still goes back to the states. his head hurts, the wound in his side that shouldve healed months ago aches, and he cant go anywhere without the smell of smoke in his lungs.

but still, he goes home.

after all, hes a reckless, stupid sonuvabitch. so when he finally lands in san deigo he pays for a taxi to the admirals house and knocks without warning. ice opens up the door to see a eerily small looking maverick with eyebags and scrapes on his face staring up at him.

hes hurt, they both know that. hes seen too much, and ice is going to kill whoever thought to keep sending him out on missions. but still, he lets mav inside as if they are only friends.

it takes too long for the mask to drop, ice thinks. but when it does, its 2 days later, and maverick just calmly shuts off the boiling water on the stove and retreats back into the small corner behind a chair.

ice isnt sure whats happening, but he knows maverick isnt okay.

slowly, he comes and sits down by the corner as well, draping his right arm over maverick, shielding him from the outside world.

when maverick comes back, he apologizes. but all ice does is cusp his hands on the others cheek and softly wipe the tears away.

Maverick is bleeding out in Ices arms and Ice feels utterly terrified, helpless and useless in the face of the inevitable. He pulls Mav closer to his chest as his breaths slow down and sobs into Mavs dark hair, trying to muffle himself. The red surrounds them, painting a haunting halo.

But Mav weakly pats his chest, trying to get his attention. Mav draws him back to look up at him, smiling through his pain and tears. He's scared but goddamnit he'd never show it, too brave and stubborn, even to the end.

"Hey c'mon Kazansky don't cry, thought you were ice cold." He laugh breathily, coughing slightly.

Ice just curses at him through heaving breaths and calls him a dumbass.

"Hey Ice, can you......c-an you l-look at m..e please...p...please" Mav stutters breathily, eyes getting harder to keep open.

"Mav....mav" Ice is now fully sobbing. Mav never begs. But he's begging now.

"H-hey, Tom, ca-n you sh..show me t-the s...sky?"

Ice looks into his eyes despair and confusion battling in their blue depths.

Mav smiles softly and just for a moment, looks entirely happy, safe and peaceful, his face cleared of cuts, and blood. It suddenly hits Ice that Maverick is the most beautiful thing he's ever seen. Then the reality is back, he's swallowing with difficulty and meets his eyes, Mav instantly relaxing back into Ice's arms.

His breaths slow.....slow....slow......and stop. His bright eyes are now a dull green, still looking up into Ices.....

Goose: So you're gonna avoid him?

Mav: Oh no, I'm gonna climb him like a tree.

Ice: [makes a neutral face]

Ice: He’ll know what it means

[later]

Rooster: Oh, and Uncle Tom said to give you a message

Rooster: [makes a neutral face]

It sounds suggestive enough in the movie………

Mav on leave, playing Super Spies with Bradley in the house, running around and trying not to break anything (they fail)
