The mindset frightens Me, the entitlement and that sudden rage that overcomes them when they don’t get their way…

The idea that because they identify as a d-type, or at least they think they do, means that every s-type will fall to their knees in worship is ridiculous! If you’ve spent any time in the scene then you know that a certain respect is given which goes both ways but never an unwielding devotion because you’re on the left side of the slash.

These relationships/dynamics are built on intimate information gathered about your partner. You have to know everything you would in a vanilla relationship plus triggers, flags, fetishes, safe words, head spaces and much more.

A Dominant’s position is not about power - not one bit - it’s about the responsibility that comes with being given control.

So many submissives are taught by these “Tumblr Doms” that the fact that they’re a Dominant means that all submissives need to respect them as such.

No. It doesn’t work like that.

Any respect given to someone should be done so as a human being, not as a Dominant or a submissive. Everyone should be given respect, both Dominants and submissives, until they prove that they don’t deserve such treatment.

Respect is a two way street. A Dominant that spouts off commands, demands pictures, or claims ownership over someone that they’ve just met isn’t being respectful. It’s borderline psychotic and proof that this person has an ego bigger than their head.

Get to know someone as a person before you try to get to know them in the lifestyle. Show that you care for them in all areas of life. Take an interest in who they are and what makes them tick. A healthy D/s relationship needs to be nurtured slowly and over time. It cannot blossom in a moment’s notice.

If a Dominant treats you poorly, he isn’t showing you respect and thus doesn’t deserve any back from you. Take care of yourself and don’t let these “Tumblr Doms” step all over you.

There are lots of great Dominants out there who understand what goes into developing a strong relationship. Please don’t settle for the boys who don’t know what they’re doing.

@geekydominant really hit the nail on the head there. Respect people based on them as a human being, not as a Dominant (or a submissive). That is to say, respect is earned, not inherent. A D/s relationship is just that - a relationship. That means you care about the other person, in all aspects, not just D/s. D/s is built on top of (or into, depending on your kinks) the relationship - it shouldn’t be the entire basis of a relationship. Prove that you care about your partner, because it is that concern for your partner’s overall life that makes them care for you.

A LOT of comments posted about this already...so let me add mine! LOL. A friend of our, locally, made a remark about someone who many know in the community here as someone who demands people's respect but usually doesn't garner much. He described him as "drunk on Sir juice". Made me laugh but how true that is! To the and women who are dominant, don't get it twisted...there is NO dominance without submission. If the sub chooses not to submit then you've got nothing. Be respectful in dominance. Dish out the humiliation or chores or swats they beg for if that's their kink, but show some gratitude for their service. Trust me when I say that it goes a very long way. The trust you earned can be taken away just as easily. *tosses his 2 cents in the hat*
