Forgive my prolonged silence, green heart. The battle of the office front has been fierce, and I have been pinned down beneath a relentless barrage of reporting and meetings. Though surrounded by spreadsheets, my thoughts have often strayed to you. Fate has finally been kind and my commanding officer (the calendar) has granted me a brief reprieve to write this little prompt.
It started with a sniffle.
Trinity had almost fallen out of her chair at the charting station when she heard it.
Not because it was a sniffle - that was a normal sound in the ED.
No, it was because of where the sniffle originated.
Her girlfriend was looking down at her trusty iPad, examining the results of a scan when she sniffled.
By the end of their shift she had counted 14 sniffles, 3 sneezes and at least 2 attempts at clearing her throat. Sometime around the 5th sniffle the gossip group chat had been converted into a war room.
Perlah had ordered soup for lunch with the specific intention of getting Baran to eat it. Dennis had found Dana's secret stash of tissues and was leaving them strategically around the Pitt. Emma had quite literally sprinted out during her lunch break to grab a bag of cough drops Trinity informed the chat that Baran preferred from the nearest Giant Eagle Pharmacy.
"Here, let me drive. You relax." Trinity stole the keys from Baran's hand and very pointedly ignored the stink eye she was receiving. "Want to stop and pick anything up on the way to your place?"
"Don't think I haven't noticed you all treating me like spun glass today." The attending slid into the passenger seat with a huff, unwrapping another cough drop from deep within her pocket as she tried to clear her throat again.
Trinity scrunched her nose up, shaking her head as she started the vehiclr. "I wouldn't say spun glass... we just... wanna make sure you're okay." As she pulled out of the employee parking area she spared a glance in Baran's direction - the other woman was already conked out, head against the window, unwrapped cough drop resting in her hand. "Now is probably a great time to tell you Ellis, Shen and Abbot are covering your shift tomorrow." She made a note to turn off Baran's alarm when they got home.
