My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult - A Crime For All Seasons (1997)

Not as on the nose as Concentration, but the energy and themes can still be traced back to Mello. Again, themes of religion and such. The sound of this album is significantly less dark and higher energy, but still gritty and industrial. Far less angsty and more of a party. It makes me think of pre-explosion Mello before things took a real turn.

Machines of Loving Grace - Concentration (1993)

The entire album’s industrial metal instrumental suits Mello very well. The electronic drums in particular reflect his canon theme songs in the anime. The themes of addiction, lust, and political apathy mixed with the described imagery of large cities, religion, and violence make it incredibly easy for me to picture Mello.

The question is always when. They exist in a timeline and have character development, so let me break it down for you real quick.

Early relationship

Matt is insecure about what's ok, so he doesn't initiate much

Mello tries way too hard to be cool, no cuddling

Mello has massive walls in his head making him think isn't allowed to crave softness - thinks cuddling is childish and cringe (craves nothing more than hugs and kisses and almost started sobbing when Matt absentmindedly ran his hand though Mello's hair) (he's like that touch-deprived cheetah)

Mafia era

Mello is getting more comfortable with cuddling and casual touches but he's still paranoid as fuck to show it publicly - he's got a reputation to lose yknow? So it all stays behind closed doors

Their bedtime arrangement more closely resembles various cutlery thrown in a drawer rather than spoons neatly fitting together haha look

Matt got the hang of what's ok and how to handle Mello and he's definitely more *openly* cuddly than him

Post-explosion

Mello goes from being unable to tolerate touch due to severe burn injuries to craving it more than anything, wanting nothing more than to curl up tightly in Matt’s arms, because that’s the only place that still feels safe and familiar

Post-canon

The further you go post-canon, the more openly chill they get with snuggles (Mello especially)

They enjoy any constellation of spooning/cuddling
