In short? They have history! I love Hammertastic as toxic exes (on both ends) but I’m not gonna push that narrative since it’s not inherently canon. Basically in the rewrite it can be read as “used to be friends” or “oh. Goodness. The narrative between them they tried to erase but it haunts them like a ghost from their past” etc etc.

when pope is taking care of lena he decides he has a few side tasks he needs to get done. one of them is getting lena to spend more time with other kids her age so she doesn't feel quite so different. it seems like a good start because it's certainly not going to be an easy fix. so they go buy the required outfits and dance shoes and he pays the fee for the class for the entire year, in cash. asks the assistant at the studio if he can meet the teacher to tell her a little bit about lena. wants to make sure whoever it is makes sure to pay attention to her and let him know if she's having trouble or not having fun. you're not there that day but he sees you before the first class when he drops lena off. he stops and takes it in quickly—you're distractingly pretty but it's more than just that—the sweet way you pull him aside while the kids put away their belongings in the little painted cubbies. how you listen to his concerns with big eyes and reassure him with a hand on his arm and tell him that you'll be sure to watch out and speak with him at the end of the class. you smile at him and tell him to enjoy the evening off, andrew and as he watches you walk away, he has one thought. you might be the way he can kill two birds with one stone.
