The counter-argument: Not having UBI is in the interests of those in power who want to do anything to the people they are in power over in order to remain in power.

They use the money to pay the first and last month’s rent on a better apartment. They buy school supplies and clothes for their kids. They go to the doctor for preventative care, seek mental health support, and get their kids glasses. They start a retirement fund. They can afford better quality food and repairs on their homes, appliances and cars. Many use the money to start a business or invest.

Know what they tend NOT to do? The vast majority do not buy drugs, they don’t drink it all away, they don’t gamble it away and they don’t blow it all on scratchers, iPhones or garish clothes. They aren’t disincentivized to work. None of those things are morally bad or wrong, but they are the most common arguments against UBI: “MEEEHHHHH WE CAN’T GIVE PEOPLE FREE MONEY THEY WON’T WORK AND THEY’LL BUY DRUUUUUGS!” Take a wild guess who is most often accused of spending money on drugs, scratchers and jewelry. Yep, POC. The mythical “welfare queen” we were all told to hate is a racist stereotype based on a handful of anecdotes during Reagan’s presidency and perpetuated by conservative white people who can’t handle the concept of sharing resources with someone who might be a little poorer, sicker, or darker than they are. Using the term “welfare queen” is a good indicator to me that they watch Fox “News” every day and haven’t had a thought of their own since the Gulf War.

Alien planets have experienced an extinction event maybe once, perhaps even twice if they’re just that unlucky during their evolutionary history and had to start the long process of rebuilding and adapting from the rubble. And then they look at humanity’s evolutionary history and…’What the F**k?!’

Humanity has had no less than FIVE MASS EXTINCTION EVENTS.

We’ve have space rocks dropped on us, had the sun blotted out, had that one time where everything just fuckin died (Literally called the Great Dying) and our evolutionary ancestors still managed to squeak by. And that’s not even mentioning the ‘less dire’ events in our history including multiple ice ages, at least three wide spread and lethal plagues, two really really bad just truly awful wars, and a whole bunch of other natural disasters that very much should have at least slowed us down for a lot longer than they did.

The aliens learn about all of this and turn to their squishy, delicate human companions and say

“Why does your planet want to kill you so badly? Do you need help?? Do you want to come with us???”

Apparently juries in Texas are now issuing life sentences for possessing information ?? There was no terrorism involved, no assassination plot; the couple mentioned in the article did not do or plan to do any violence. They literally just got sentenced to life in prison for being associated with anti-fascism (aka... a pro-democracy movement).

So just to be clear:

Attack the US government and attempt a coup = Pardoned and free to go!

Be present at a protest or in possession of leftist information = Life sentence.

Last year on the Fourth of July, a small group from Dallas-Fort Worth held a night-time noise demonstration, setting off fireworks outside the Prairieland Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility south of the cities, in solidarity with the detainees. A few protesters broke away and spray-painted graffiti on employees’ cars and a security post, slashed the tires on a government van, and broke a security camera. The facility’s guards ordered the protesters to disperse, and most of them did. When a police officer arrived at the scene, drawing his gun, an armed protester shot her rifle, hitting the officer in the shoulder. The officer survived.

After a three-week trial, a jury found eight of nine protesters guilty of “providing material support to terrorists”, among other crimes.

For the Sotos, this “material support” included owning a “printing press” used to print anarchist zines and being part of a leftist book club, the federal government argued. The couple had already left the scene by the time guns were drawn. All eight of the defendants sentenced so far have received unusually harsh sentences – 30 to 100 years – essentially life in prison.

Their attorneys announced their intention to appeal, but many supporters are doubtful that anything short of a presidential pardon from a future administration would free them.

The Prairieland case was the first tried and convicted under the Trump Department of Justice’s “counter-terrorism” initiatives targeting “antifa” – short for antifascist – a decentralized movement the administration has officially categorized as a “domestic terrorist organization”. The federal government argued the Prairieland defendants, what they called a “North Texas Antifa cell”, had planned the demonstration as an assassination attempt against a law enforcement officer. The government alleged this conspiracy even though the defendants were loosely connected, and some who attended the protest did not even know each other.

So being anti-fascist is llegal and worthy of going to prison for life in the United States.

And they got. Life. In. Prison.
