Iām not even in this fandom but I AM in the DC area and would like to schedule some kind of schadenfreude field trip with anyone else whoās interested and fully vaccinated
Helping hare
I just looked it up. Not guilty of murder, but of manslaughter, because of "diminished responsibility." Because he was anxious and depressed and struggling with the COVID pandemic, his murder of his wife is just a manslaughter. Ruth Williams's death is legally classified as manslaughter because this piece of shit was stressed out, so it's more understandable that he'd murder his wife. I'm fucking sick.

sorry not sorry but I am always going to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to queer inclusion
Like if you say youāre bi but youāve only dated people of the opposite gender? youāre bi as hell i donāt care.
If you tell me youāre trans but you havenāt transitioned yet or donāt want to undergo certain aspects of transitioning? you are trans! Iām gonna call you by the name and pronouns you tell me to use
what if someone looks feminine, is afab, and uses she/her pronouns but identifies as nonbinary? what if someone looks masculine, is amab, and uses he/him pronouns but identifies as nonbinary? both of those people are nonbinary because they said they are!
if youāre asexual or aromantic but youāre still hetero in the sense that you experience attraction of some sort to the opposite gender and that gender alone? youāre still a part of the community babe! Aros and aces have always been queer.
If you donāt know if youāre queer or not? youāre certainly welcome to be a part of our spaces while you figure it out!
if you donāt wanna use labels? dont! thatās it! never let anyone pressure you into labels if youāre not ready to define that part of yourself.
if you use labels/pronouns that are uncommon and/or perceived as strange? thatās your label! those are your pronouns! who am i to tell you you canāt use those words to describe yourself??
basically fuck all the debates about the nuances of this stuff. if you tell me youāre queer, youāre fucking queer. I have no right to start discourse with people about their own identities and neither does anyone else.
Please donāt pirate books at least while the author is alive. Iāll make an exception for actual billionaires and wildly expensive textbooks you cannot afford yet need to complete your studies. I canāt make an exception for assholes, because weāre all considered assholes by someone.Ā I donāt know how many people realise how many writers who created successful, beloved stories and characters still die poor while other people get rich off the same work. I donāt think people realise that in the UK the current average yearly earnings for an author has nosedived over the last fifteen years to Ā£10,500.Ā That obviously is forcing people to quit writing. It increasingly means writing is a job for people whoāve inherited money or have wealthy spouses who can support them. I donāt know if people realise that in general, writers are poor and getting poorer. Iām sorry, but if you think widespread sense of entitlement to free books has nothing to do with that ⦠youāre just wrong.Ā
I say I donāt think people realise - the truth is I hope they donāt, because the alternative is that they donāt care. Thatās certainly the impression Iāve got from Twitter, where a truly horrifying number of people are arguing that copyright onĀ all books should expire after thirty years, and you should be able to acquire books forĀ free after that. This ⦠would not just mean that everyone gets free books. It would mean if you write a book at 30, not only do you lose any royalties from it at 60, but Disney can take it, make a franchise out of it, Scrooge McDuck it up in a pool of money while you starve because writers donāt get workplace pensions.
Some threads on the unintended (?) consequences of this. I canāt go over it all again. John Brownlow NK Jemisin Michael Marshall Smith Me Marina Lostetter Kari Dru and others William Gibson and others
There are plenty of others. Itās not that this actual idea will actuallyĀ happen, but I do think it reinforces the idea that itās not only okay, but sometimes actually virtuous to search for ways to enjoy writersā work without paying for it. Like itās somehow a step towards a better world. Not just at the reader end, to be fair, at the employer end too. And I do see a lot of people here too who are all about supporting workers unless the workers are writers in which case fuckāem.Ā
Like. If you want to radically change society in such a way that mass-media conglomerates donāt exist and so canāt exploit us and weāre supported to make art in some other way than fine. But can you start the revolution with actual rich people please, not ask us to live right now, in the society weāve got,Ā without the money we need to survive it. Finally, a plea:Ā I really, really, do not want to debate this. This whole thing genuinely makes me feel tense and shaky and sick. If youāve got to disagree - unfollow me, block me, vagueblog somewhere I canāt see it. The Twitter version of this already has me feeling like Iāve been kicked in the gut. I didnāt want to write this post. I just felt I wasnāt going to have any peace until I did.
