VERY MUCH ALIVE

I'm only halfway through but the new Elle series is doing something really interesting I think. It's flipped the script, showing the story from an autistic perspective - we the viewer are following and associating with Elle, who is veritably the "outcast" in this school. But it seems backwards - "alternative" is the norm here, and what Elle considers usual is unheard of. Her interests are mocked despite no one knowing anything real about her. She tries to fit in and make friends but is further ostracised for it. She is repeatedly embarrassed by rules that everyone seems to know but her: for example, the pool party has no water. All of this reflects how the world can seem irregular and nonsensical to an autistic mind, and how it can feel like you can never get it right - she's mocked for her dress sense, and then she changes it in an attempt to fit in, which leads to more mockery.
