whatever happened to the teenage dream?

like okay so like this is inspired by this one ask I got a while ago (and I’m sorry anon i haven’t had time to really lock in on it BUT clearly it’s still on my mind and won’t leave so you’re good) but essentially marc is this mermaid/magical sea creature who has protected this fishing towns waters for years, right? He’s kept the water healthy and made sure it was always full of fish. In turn, all people had to do was give him white swan feathers (yk cuz reference) so his magic could be at his fullest, or at least the fullest he would allow himself to use. Over time Marc was turned into a bit of a legend as people simply thought he was a spirit of luck. They also got kind of weary of the magic since Marc being the mischievous little dude he is, would fuck around with the waters and overturn boats, make waves a bit erratic, and control the water to splash the kids playing on the beach. so like they made a legend that if you gave the water a feather of a white swan, the waters would be bountiful and appeased (I haven’t come up with a rhyme I’m sorry but that’s the gist 🥲). Time passed and rarely anyone really believed in the legend, making it a bit of a cautionary tale since there were no more white swans in the area so it’s used as a story to steer kids from going to deep into the waters.

now for like context, marc is a water spirit of sorts so he is kind of immortal so that’s why it’s like years pass people change type thing yk? anywhoodle then we have Ringo, who’s lived in the town all his life with his mom and stepdad. Now in a way, he is a bit of a Disney princess. Longing for something more, a bit of a dreamer, has a sprinkle of daddy issues. BUT more in the Moana type of way. (This is the part where we’re gonna sound stupid and insane I’m sorry 😣) Ringos always loved the ocean and wishes to explore it. He’s always been stuck in his town since his family has always lived there yk? His stepdad is a fisherman and teaches Ringo to fish but doesn’t like to fish outside the “comfort areas” which are like places that Marc doesn’t really frequent + areas that weren’t affected by a small oil spill a while ago (WHICH IS ACTUALLY RELEVANT cuz that’s where like marc and his sea life friends got kind of disillusioned with humans) so obviously he’s like okay but there’s a great big ocean over there, why can’t we go over there? and his stepdads like cuz we have no business over there. So like very comfort zone people right and ringos not having that. So he’s like I want adventure and I want to explore and really I just hope my life isn’t this forever so naturally his favorite place to be is the beach. A small little part of the beach tucked away by this rock.

anyway anyway I should mention though (and it ties into the oil spill) that the town has gotten industrial and puts a lot of waste into the waters. So naturally the “comfort areas” are areas that aren’t polluted and stuff (can you tell I’m trying to make this all make sense now as I’m writing this?). Marc has been trying to keep the waters clean but without the white swan feathers, he’s nearly powerless. So he’s been debating moving the local sea life out and searching for another spot.

okay so like ringo goes back and the next morning goes through other pictures he’s taken of fish before and tries to like match up what he saw and realizes it doesn’t. It truly was something he’d never seen before so he asks his mom and his stepdad and they’re reminded of the legend. And at this point it’s essentially folklore and a story ringo only remembers slightly. So they tell him and he’s like well maybe it’s real and they’re like where the fuck would you find a white swan ‘round these parts? and he’s like well fuck. So he does a bit more research on the town and how it was way back when right?

so the next night Ringo goes out and tries to get a glimpse of the fin again. This is then when Marc and his sea life friends notice Ringo. (So like cuz this is fanfiction and we are shipping Ringo Starr and Marc Bolan of all fucking people, allow me some grace on the fact that there are seahorses in this story. I don’t care if it’s not geographically accurate I LOVE SEAHORSES!!) okay so there’s this fan group of seahorses that follow Marc EVERYWHERE like they’re kids marc babysits unwillingly. Anyway there’s four of them right or really four main one right? It’s Myra, Ry and Ny (twins), and Roan. Myra is the first to see Ringos lantern light from the surface and she gets scared and runs and tells marc. Marc goes to investigate and breaks the surface (in my head it’s only his eyes and his hair) (SPEAKING OF HAIR, because his hairs curly and a significant piece of his physical appearance, he has a charm on it so that it doesn’t get wet. It’s almost hydrophobic but he keeps up with it cuz yk magic) anyway he finds Ringo, who had planned to stake out the area for the fin cuz holy shit if the legend is true than maybe the spirit could tell me where I can find white swan feathers and then it could fix the waters (ringos deeper seated motivation for this is under construction, let me develop that more lol). Anyway Ringo had fallen asleep and it lets marc be able to observe him more without revealing himself. At first he’s obviously like “what the fuck?” and very alert. But he’s curious and decides to protect Ringo and send him back to shore.

Ringo then wakes up and is like “whoa what?” and thinks it was the water spirit. So he’s like “okay so it’s like 98.99% real, I need to find a white swan” so with a lot of convincing on his parents part, he’s able to get either John or Paul or George (or maybe all of them idk I’m not really a Beatles fan, I’m a Ringo fan ((really I’m a Marc fan and a Ringo fan by association but WHATEVER))) and they go on a short adventure to get a white swan feather. Meanwhile Marc’s having a hard time losing his magic and scared he’s not going to be able to protect the sea life. Plus he’s kinda like “who the fuck was that just drifting on by asleep?” but he’s interested cuz that was the first human he’d seen in a long time to actually go out that far.
