Black Caucus of PSUSU
It’s been a while since I’ve posted here on my own. Here is a nice photoset of my day with PSUSU’s Black Caucus event at Portland Community College, where they had a lovely -and open mic- discussion with community members and students about toxic masculinity and “The Myth of The Mass Shooter”.
Over the past few days I’ve had friends visit me, adventures to be had and plenty more. Usually I’d arrive home around 1-4am(ish). These are the products of patience and ‘creativity’. Yes some are cliché but I had a lot of fun making the drawings.
Each of these long exposures lasted anywhere between 4-45 seconds each. My good friend Adan helped with the Smiley, and accompanying me on these ventures.
Equipment Used:
Camera: Canon 5D Mark iii
Flash: Speedlite Yongnuo 560-III
Memory Card/File Size: Sandisk Ultra/(range:) 14-23Mb per photo
File Selection: M-RAW
Editing Software: Nik Photography Software (Silver Efex Pro 2, & HDR Efex 2)
#ArtAsActivism was the event run by Rachel Orey, a Senior in High School. This was not your typical poetry event for students, no. This was much more. Through some personal doubts of mine, Rachel managed to get Andrea Gibson to attend the event as the headliner.
Throughout my time with Metalcore News, Lyrical Exchange, and the one Redbull event, I found that this is definitely a path that I would love to pursue in my future. Donovan has been immensely kind when it came to giving me opportunities and showing me how great the Redbull and concert media can be.
As for my work I saw that it went from just me posting photos to me posting what feels like my best work. and getting it shared on big social media accounts.
I hope for this not to be the end of my internship as more of a hiatus. I’d love to continue to be an intern for Donovan and work after my time at HTHI until I leave for college in the fall. It’s been real.
Thank you Stephanie for giving me this great connection that has broadened my photos networking reach. Thank you Donovan for giving me so many opportunities that helped me learn more about my photography and how to share it. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to share my work with a bigger audience. and I most definitely hope to see you at a concert or work with you in the future. If you need a photographer I’m sure you know who to call.
Thanks again,
Paul Holtzman

Externships first Impressions
As of May 9th I’ve been working for Donovan Dresti I have shot 3 shows and 1 Redbull sporting event. I have witnessed so much, as well as how open and accepting people are. Especially for the Redbull event I was asked to take photos for so many people. Sure I didn’t know them but I once they saw the photos online, I received a lot of kind feedback and, “thanks for the photos”. This internship is really pushing me to really want to strive for a job like this in the future. As for specific people, Donovan is really kind and very outgoing. Without hesitation he has told me to do what I can to get the shot. As a photographer, hearing those words is like receiving an all access key to the event. Donovan really is the biggest reason I want to pursue a job/career in this field. Not much strikes me about the job seeing that I have photographed events for a while. The only thing that stands out is the networking opportunities and being able to have so much access. I love it. I haven’t made many changes as my internship has a plan as it goes kind of attitude. So as events pop up I work them into my schedule. I’m really excited for the potential of getting my name and my work especially out in the public. I’m not worried about much other than the fact that I might not get the right amount of photos or the right photo for the event.
Seeing that my externship is always shot on location I’d just pick the places that I’ve worked at so far.
This first photo is of Redbull’s Curb Kings at Belmont Park in Mission Beach, SD, CA.
This second photo is at SOMA San Diego, a local concert venue for all kinds of music (The Metalcore News portion of my externship)
Redbull’s Curb Kings (Saturday, May 9th)
This day marked my official day of externship. I got the amazing opportunity to be on the “field” as 90 local San Diego skaters duked it out to be crowned the Curb King.
Sadly tumblr will only allow me to upload 10 photos (out of the 53 I edited), which means I had to pick my personal top 10.
On each photo there will a little “i” in the lower left corner where there will be info on each photo along with a caption. This information will most likely only be useful to other photographers as the information given is all the settings I used in that specific moment.
As always if any questions about photos arise feel free to use the ask feature on the left hand side of the page, or type (ph-otographs.tumblr.com/ask) and ask away.
(P.S. to my teacher, You can see Donovan and yourself in the 8th Photo)

Externship time...
I managed to score an externship with Metalcore News, meaning I will be working with its founder Donovan Dresti. So over the course of the month of May and Part of June, I will be going to concerts and possibly helping out with other events as a press member.
If you want to follow my photographic process of this next month follow me on instagram @ph_otographs, and even on Facebook as PH-otograhpsSD. Can’t wait.
Today (May 9th) I will be photographing part of Redbull’s Curb Kings at Belmont Park, Mission Beach, SD. If you go I’d love to see you! Heres to the next month!
Equipment I will be using today at Redbull’s Curb Kings:
Camera: Canon eos 5D Mark iii, Canon eos 7D
Lenses: Canon EF 50mm F/2.5 (only lens I have sadly for the next week)
Flashes (if needed): Yonguo YN-560 speed light
Editing Software: Googles Nik Collection
Welcome to Sun Diego.
Here are the photos I took for Metalcore Magazine last night during the A Day To Remember and Blink 182 at Soma San Diego.
ALL PHOTOS ARE MY PROPERTY AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. all photos were taken on a SONY NEX-3N camera.
Had to re-edit some photos to use for an engineering project.. some are a more grainy than I like, but that’s what happens when you use an old Canon camera..
Wet Suburbia:
I got a new Diana F+ for my birthday and I thought I would go out and take some rad shots in the unusual winter rain that San Diego is getting.
If you have any tips please let me know, I'd happily listen to anything you have to say about my photography and how to better my photos.
thanks, Paul H.
