I have become a regular at the local cafe. I sit at the lunch counter with my laptop to write. The workers keep me updated on all the tea.

I almost immediately accidentally made eye contact with him. He practically beelined to the chair next to me, and stares at my notebook. The vibe is immediately strange. I understand why he was banned from the other cafe.

Me: A script. I'm developing an alternate script for the international phonetic alphabet. My goal is to make it one grapheme represent a single syllable, rather than one grapheme per phoneme. I'm happy with the consonants, but the vowels still need work. I'm experimenting with kerning based on Georgian script-

As a former figure skater I feel obliged to point out how technically difficult that little Chaplin patter would be. See the kind of speed he's getting up to and then immediately moving into that "walk" - sometimes without even a brake manoeuvre. The momentum you build up when moving at speed has to get released somewhere so stopping like that is usually an easy way to topple over (not on purpose). In the true spirit of Chaplin he is making very hard and potentially dangerous things look easy.

something i like about disco elysium is that although it has an obvious viewpoint (if you think the game isnt explicitly communist you're just wrong i'm afraid) it doesn't make the proponents of the other ideologies big silly goofballs to make this point--joyce and kim are wrong, both morally and factually, but they are wrong eloquently and compellingly. even measurehead, in the final cut, gets a long and compelling (and wrong! and fascist! to be clear!) monologue where he makes the case for his ideology.
like it compares very favorably to a trend i see a lot in media that wants to Say Something About Fascism, which is to have a guy walk on and say 'im fasho the fascist!' and then he slips on a banana peel and goes 'bwagh!'. like--that's not a critique of fascism. you've made the fascist look bad, yeah, but not by attacking any substantial part of their politics or actions. anyone could fall over and go 'bwagh'. it's not even bad critique, it's just not critique, it's painting a groucho marx moustache and glasses onto a photo.
