I agree with the author of the post that Sitara hides her hatred because she wants to get Fatima’s book back and Töregene doesn’t because she feels she has nothing to lose, but I think that the ways they deal with their grudges show their class differences too: Sitara/Fatima is a slave so she has to show herself as submissive and agreeable to her masters if she wants to reach something and to avoid harsh brutal punishment since slaves are denied their humanity and agency and seen as things and thus are the lowest social class in the hierarchy (and she herself admits of not opposing resistance because of it), while Töregene is a noblewoman who can be punished only by her husband and his top wife but they don’t because the first one has a form of Lima Syndrome and wants to have her coming to like her life in the Mongol Ulus and the second doesn’t consider it worthy (and Töregene probably acknowledges it and it adds to her resentment and feeling of powerlessness: I think that part of the reason why she doesn’t hide her hatred is due to her lashing out as she can’t do anything else).
A Witch in Mongolia: EP 1/2 - Review and General Thoughts (Edit: For additional historical/cultural commentary)
(Content: Small mention of possibly implied rape, discussions of historical slavery in the 13th-century Islamic world and the Mongol Empire, spoilers for the first 2 episodes)
I love historical fiction, so from the second I saw the trailer my brain was exploding with excitement.
Please note: I am not Muslim, Iranian, or Mongolian, so if I get anything incorrect, please correct me without reservation.
Set in 1213 in Tus (Eastern Iran), the story follows Sitara, a young girl sold as a slave to a scholarly household. Here, despite initial reservations, she comes to learn the importance of knowledge - and then the Mongols attack. Now our protagonist sets out on a journey of revenge.
Beautifully adapting author Tomato Soup's art style, Science Saru and the hard work of the animators and specialists of Islamic architecture has made the series a feast for the eyes.
It's very clear that the staff and author put a ton of work into making the world feel accurate and lived-in (e.g. the opening scene has what I believe is the adhan/daily call for prayer heard in the background)
A fun fact: Zumurrud’s name means ‘emerald’ in Persian, referring to her eye colour. Possibly her brother, whom she calls Mikhail, also was given an Persian name after they converted to Islam. She would probably be what is referred to as a Saqaliba in medieval Islamic sources, a term for Slavs or Eastern/Central Europeans in general
There are also many references to real-life scholars from the Islamic Golden Age, and depictions of exchanges of knowledge between cultures (such as the importance of Euclid's 'Elements', or one character wanting to seek knowledge beyond his religious education)
The series' cute artstyle belies how brutal the story is. One city is shown to be almost entirely razed to the ground in retaliation for the death of one of Genghis Khan's sons-in-law.
Another example is that it's possibly implied Sitara is raped by a Mongol soldier in the second episode. Her disheveled state can be attributed to the fact that Fatima was just murdered in front of her, but it's somewhat notable that she's missing the sash around her waist, the room she's in is now completely trashed, and this scenery is shown in tandem with the plundering of goods in her household.
I thought it was very impactful that they chose to depict Genghis Khan not as a man, but as a wolf atop a cliff, overlooking vast stretches of land.
I love that they got actual Japanese-Mongolian sumo wrestlers to voice Tolui and his soldiers. Presumably, their Japanese voice actors will step in as Sitara, later to be known as Fatima, comes to better understand Mongolian.
Also please note this ring on Tolui’s thumb!
This is an archery ring - You can see there’s a protruding part on the ring with which to hook the bowstring — this prevents putting too much strain on the thumb. In contrast to European styles of archery, traditional Mongolian archery uses the thumb to hold the arrow in place/draw the bow, with the arrow notched on the outer edge. This allows the archer to shoot at any angle, such as the infamous Parthian shot (pictured here)
I do also enjoy the portrayal of the lives of people who are enslaved in 13th-century Iran. Sitara is treated well, it isn't as though the entirety of her life as a slave is pure misery, and she does manage to form genuine bonds. Fatima, Sitara's mother-figure/mistress, is even the one who says:
However, as her peer Anis notes, they're still not considered people, but property; it is at the whims of the family that owns her that she is educated, though they care for her, and there's no guarantee they will free her (though in this case, Fatima does say she wants to free Sitara)
This fact is confronted when the Mongols attack and gather women and children in order to sell them as slaves; Anis's last act of agency is to die a slave to her Tus family, instead of a slave to her Mongol captors.
Seeing as Sitara will eventually become a slave to the Mongol royal family and eventually rise to a much higher position (alongside with a few of those members being prisoners of war who were later married into the family), I hope this is something continuously brought up in the series.
Furthermore, Muhammad is meant to be the historical figure, Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, which can be deduced from a read of Al-Tusi’s childhood, so, even though the narrator states Sitara never saw him again, at least he did survive the siege of Nishapur!
Anyways, I don't know if I'll be able to hold back my anticipation long enough to wait for the next episode, but either way, I loved this debut, 10/10, incredible
Sources I checked seemed inconclusive on how commonly rape occurred during the Mongol conquests. At the very least, it does not seem to have been done large-scale during the reign of Genghis Khan.

The Kingdom of Hawai’i was illegally overthrown with the help of American businessmen and we have suffered under the iron grip of America.
Our land is simply seen as a vacation spot, my people are simply seen as tour guides and hula dancers. We have had our culture, our history, and our people turned into a commercialized joke by America.
The rampant tourism kills our islands with endless hotels, attractions and overcrowding. The housing and living costs are out of control because of the false “paradise” narrative. The Navy poisons our water and destroys our land. Covid has killed so many of my people due to the reckless and selfish nature of tourists. If you are a white person in a racialized person’s life, especially as a partner or close friend, you should go out of your way to ask regularly “hey is there anything you have been holding on to that I did?” and critically both fix it and NOT DO ANYTHING TO PUNISH THEM FOR TELLING YOU.
As a white person raised in a white supremacist society, you’re gonna fuck up sometimes. That’s just a fact. But racialized people often aren’t able/comfortable speaking up when y’all do some shit because of the power imbalance/not feeling up to educating when you may be resistant/don’t think the “fight” will be Worth It.
Show initiative without making it A Struggle or playing the white guilt card. Show you actually care about them, their struggles, and the way you interact with them BEFORE they have to have a bigger Conversation with you, beyond when they need to yell about someone else being racist.
And for fucks sake if they’re making/showing you something from their culture fucking act like you realize the importance of that, that they’re showing you shows they grew up with or making you food they made with their families, that they’re letting you in and trusting you more than other whites in their life.
This would honestly be life changing for me. The idea came up because I feel so incapable of telling the people in my life when they do racist shit. And like furthermore, actually respond beyond just an I'm sorry. Like for the love of god actually internalize the shit the Black and Brown folks say to you.
I'm seeing a lot of tags from white people saying something along the lines of please tell me if I fuck up and like that really goes against the point of the post. Racialized people have to swallow so much racism on a daily basis and it's impossible to tell who is safe to confront.
Even close friends or partners are not necessarily safe. I have had partners dismiss accusations of racism just off hand, I have had partners treat me like a repository for knowledge on Muslim cultural practices despite the fact that *my family has been Christian since Jesus,* hell I have had a partner say I was overplaying my pain at the genocide to get sympathy.
Racialized people are constantly waiting for the other shoe to job. Constantly waiting for their "antiracist" white friend to decide they have learned all they need to. We need you to ask. We need you to care enough to be proactive literally at all. Stop asking us to trust you without doing any fucking work to prove you are trustworthy.
your first question,.,,., drumrolls...,,,,, : what's your favourite season?
Oh, this is so exciting!
Hmm… I find winter the most beautiful season. But I think I would say my favourite is spring! The sight of flowers blooming is really lovely, and the weather is usually mild, so I can go on long walks without feeling uncomfortable
Plus, spring can be used as a metaphor for hope/new beginnings/etc. in prose
aw i never thought about liking seasons for their prose, that's so whimsical,,,
As for me, i used to like fall a lot. like, imagine the stereotypical fall, with brown crunchy leaves and an occasional chill that makes you wear scarves outside...
but honestly, since i live in Asia, fall is NOT all that. it actually is heat (as always) accompanied by storms after storms,,... So my favourite is probably winter—the only season where i find the weather enjoyable most of the time LOL
Ah, yes, I totally get that. Often stereotypical images of the seasons don’t match up depending on where you live!
I’ve kind of disliked fall since young, because where I used to live fall was constantly rainy and cold, so it was just a soggier winter with piles of rotting leaves.
Greece is a bit like that, too! Winter is definitely the most pleasant of the seasons

This was a request from AO3. The scenario is of the HSR men taking care of a Reader who became blind and is struggling with adjusting to the disability.
Characters: Mydei, Anaxa, Phainon, and Argenti
Mydeimos
🍷 Mydei knew that strife and war brought with them casualties and injuries, and that having you in his Kremnoan Detachment increased your risk of getting hurt. He knew, yet he was still unprepared for the sharp stab of fear that pierced his heart when he was told you got seriously wounded in the recent battle. Some shrapnel had flown at your face and embedded itself in your skin, but otherwise you were alive. Mydei was relieved beyond measure that you had survived, though learning that the shrapnel had pierced your eyes and rendered them useless dampened his joy. He knew that the loss of your eyesight would heavily impact your life, but he was prepared to be there for you.
🍷 A part of him feels guilty for not being there to protect you from harm. As your partner and friend, he saw it as his duty to keep you safe. His body could handle being gravely injured while yours could not, so it was only logical he should serve as your shield. Still, what’s done is done and he needed to learn to live with it.
🍷 Mydei could tell that your blindness was difficult for you to accept. It made you depressed and scared at not being able to see the world and people around you anymore. Being robbed of your eyesight so suddenly wouldn’t be easy for anyone, so he devoted himself to caring for you in whatever way you needed.
🍷 When you were no longer under professional medical care and were deemed well enough to go home, Mydei nursed you back to health, both physically and mentally. He made sure to apply medicine to your healing wounds and change your bandages, taking care to be gentle with your face, and supported you through the grief of losing your eyes.
🍷 While he wasn’t great at giving words of encouragement, seeing your depressed state motivated Mydei to tell you to keep your chin up and not let your disability knock you down. It may be difficult now, but you’re more resilient than you give yourself credit for, and he’s confident that with time, you will be able to live your life again. It may not be the same as before, but you will have him to rely on. There’s no word for ‘giving up’ in the Kremnoan language, so don’t throw in the towel.
🍷 Mydei served as your eyes while you got used to walking without seeing where you’re going. He let you hold onto him for guidance and warned you about obstacles or changes in terrain that you might bump or trip over. He also did your shopping, cleaning, laundry, and every other task around the house until you felt well enough to try doing some of them on your own, at which point he still supervised you to make sure you wouldn’t get hurt. He would only stop once he felt confident you could handle yourself on your own.
🍷 Until you got the hang of eating without eyesight, Mydei was the one to feed you. He cooked your meals whenever he had time and carefully spoon-fed you, making sure to blow on the food so it wouldn’t burn your tongue. You felt like a little child being fed from a spoon by a parent, but your complaints about this treatment fell on deaf ears. Mydei said that until you learned how to do it yourself, he would help you. He knows he failed you by letting you get hurt in that battle, so let him make it up to you by ensuring you’re well taken care of.
🍷 Mydei became even more protective of you since your injury, both out of guilt and the innate need to keep you safe since you became more vulnerable without eyesight. He nipped any malicious rumors about the origins of your disability in the bud, threatening the gossiping lion head statues to keep their mouths shut, as well as chasing away any nefarious individuals that hoped to take advantage of your blindness. He would give up his life to protect you and your honor.
🍷 Mydei remembered that there existed a special kind of script that blind people could read. Braille, he thinks it was called. He asked Anaxa to help teach you and him how to read Braille so you could still enjoy books and Mydei could write you notes in the event he couldn’t relay the information to you directly. He also promised to get books in Braille for his library and that you should tell him your favorites so he can add them to the collection.
Anaxagoras
🌿 Anaxa knew early on that you had a genetic disease that slowly ate away at your vision. Some members of your family had it, but you were unlucky enough to develop it fairly early in your life. Despite knowing your fate, you struggled to accept the idea of having your vision completely taken away, so Anaxa resolved to try and prevent it. He began researching a cure or even a preventative measure that would stop the worsening of your disease. But little by little, your eyesight worsened until you couldn’t see anymore, and he had to bitterly admit he failed.
🌿 You already struggled with partial blindness, but once you became fully blind, you struggled more than before. It pained Anaxa to see you so helpless and heartbroken over the unfair hand that fate dealt you. He knew you could overcome this challenge and learn how to live with your blindness. He’s seen others with the same disability lead normal lives, so it was more than possible. But what you needed right now was a push to get you out of the pit of despair you buried yourself in so you could find the motivation to adapt and live your best life. Anaxa encouraged you to think of your disability in a different light. While losing your eyesight was a life-changing ordeal, this also allowed you to view the world in a completely new way and notice things you may otherwise have not noticed before. You may have lost your eyes but in their place, you gained higher sensitivity in your other senses so use them to adapt and persevere.
🌿 Had he two functional eyes, Anaxa would have offered to transplant one of them to you in the hopes of giving back your ability to see, but alas, he only had one. He had to settle for researching a tool that could help you see again even if it took him decades to develop it.
🌿 Anaxa swallowed his dislike for Aglaea and approached her with questions about her own blindness. He knew she could still perceive the world around her better than any pair of eyes ever could thanks to her demigod powers, but he still thought it worthwhile to ask on the off chance her answers could give him some insight into developing a tool for you to use. Perhaps he could find a way to imitate the power of her threads? A pity she won’t give him any to experiment with, but it’s a start.
🌿 Anaxa knows how to read in Braille and took it upon himself to teach you how to read in that script. He exercised great patience while teaching you which assortment of raised dots corresponded to which letter and even praised you for correctly translating the sentences and quickly grasping the new skill. Anaxa doesn’t want you to lose out on the ability to obtain knowledge hidden in books and scrolls and strongly believes that you should have an equal opportunity to obtain it. He knows the selection of books in Braille is much smaller than texts penned down in ink, so he makes frequent requests to have texts you’re interested in reading transcribed into Braille. It gets him into trouble with some of the other scholars at the Grove, but Anaxa pays them little mind.
🌿 Any books he’s unable to procure in Braille, Anaxa reads aloud to you. He may scoff over some of the things written in them but perseveres if it makes you happy. However, he makes frequent remarks about this or that sounding ridiculous, how the author didn’t do their research, and going on tangents about why some of the things described could not work in real life. These reading sessions usually result in him roping you into a discussion or even giving you a lecture, but he finds these moments with you far more fun than reading awful literature.
🌿 He's been skilled in the art of invention since he was a child, so it costs Anaxa very little to design a mobility cane for you. Not just any ordinary cane, either. It’s designed to suit your needs. Aside from helping you get around, it also assists you with daily tasks you may struggle to do with your disability thanks to Anaxa building in various tools and gadgets into the cane.
Phainon
☀️ The Black Tide was a fearsome enemy. Not only did it spawn monsters that wreaked havoc, destroying everything in their paths, but it also corroded human flesh. Phainon was aware of these dangers, but he firmly believed you would be fine when you volunteered to travel with him out of the city to help rescue a nearby village that was on the brink of being swallowed by the Black Tide. After all, he would be there to protect you if things went south. However, the Tide overwhelmed your small party of heroes. While you managed to rescue most of the villagers and make it out with your lives, the Tide ended up corroding your eyes, leaving you blind.
☀️ To say that Phainon felt devasted was an understatement. His heart bled for you, for the way you now struggled to navigate the world around you, bumping into furniture and tripping over scattered items on the ground, flinching at every loud sound and unexpected touch. He had rarely seen you so helpless and scared, but now this state has become your everyday life. Phainon himself felt helpless to help you, and it frustrated him. Nevertheless, he did his best to hide the sadness and frustration he felt regarding your disability—at least when you were around. He didn’t want his own negativity to impact you when you were already struggling to live with your new reality.
☀️ He may not have the power to heal your eyes, but Phainon can at the very least try to heal your mind and heart. He can see how heavily your blindness weighs on you and how you struggle to adapt to it, so he reassures and encourages you that you’ll get through this. It may be scary right now, but you have him and your friends and family to rely on during this rough time. You are not alone. Lean on him if you need to, he will be your guiding light in the darkness. That is a promise.
☀️ Shortly after arriving back in Okhema, Phainon took you to get a checkup from Hyacine, faintly hoping that maybe she could do something about your eyesight, only to be disappointed when she sadly shook her head. Nevertheless, her cheerful attitude prevented either of you from getting too depressed and she reassured both of you that aside from the damage to your eyes, you were otherwise healthy and could live a relatively normal life. Hyacine urged you to come visit her at least once a week for therapy to improve your mental health while you acclimated to living without sight.
☀️ To battle with his helplessness and better understand what you are going through, Phainon pored over countless texts and scrolls relating to blindness, trying to learn all he could about it. He also asked Hyacine for advice on how to help and care for someone with blindness so he could take proper care of you. Your loss of sight upturned your previous life together, but Phainon was determined to stick by your side and help you through this even if it meant making major changes to accommodate your disability.
☀️ He learned that service pets are great at helping the disabled, so he thought of getting you a trained Chimera to act as a service dog of sorts. Finding one that suits your specific needs would be very difficult, but Phainon won’t give up. He’ll ask around for a suitable trainer or seek Anaxa’s help in developing a training regime for the Chimera. If that fails, then he’ll look into getting a different animal companion for you (Anaxa recommended a dromas but Phainon rejected the idea).
☀️ Phainon swore to help you in any way you needed. Just say the word and he would help you walk to a destination, fetch you a drink, get your groceries, cook you a meal, slay a dragon, and bark like a dog. Okay, maybe not the latter, but the point stands that he wants to ensure you’re as comfortable as can be until you get the hang of your disability.
☀️ Since you could no longer see what happened around you, Phainon got into the habit of describing what went on around you so you’d have some idea. He got really good at giving detailed descriptions of what the people in your vicinity did, how someone was dressed, what a piece of furniture or building looked like, or how delicious (or gross) certain foods looked. He tried to be as vivid as he could in his descriptions so you could visualize it in your mind’s eye.
Argenti
🌹 Argenti blamed himself like no tomorrow when you got hurt while adventuring on a new planet with him. As a Knight of Beauty, he walked a path riddled with all kinds of dangers. He knew better than to bring you along on a potentially dangerous excursion, but you insisted, and he simply could not say no to you. Now, as he stares in horror at the bloodied gashes marring your lovely face where a monster had slashed you with its claws, Argenti regrets his thoughtless decision. You got hurt because you followed him into danger and he failed to uphold his oath to protect you.
🌹 After rushing you to the nearest healer, Argenti was wracked with nerves while waiting for news on your condition. He paced around the room until a doctor came to him to break the news. He was told you would be alright, but you will have scarring, and your eyes were badly damaged so you will no longer be able to see. Argenti got to experience a brief relief before the news of your blindness crushed his heart like a vice. His failure to protect you permanently cost you your eyesight, which he could never forgive himself for.
🌹 In the following days, Argenti visited you every day until you were well enough to return back to The One and Only. While the doctors did a good job patching you up, Argenti still wanted to help care for your healing injuries. He insisted on applying the salve prescribed to you by the doctor on your wounds to speed up the healing process and did his best to change your bandages. He wasn’t too shabby at it either, having gained some experience caring for the wounded in his pious pursuit of Idrila.
🌹 Argenti’s methods of caring for you were a bit extreme. He carried you everywhere in his arms so you wouldn’t be in danger of tripping or bumping into anything. He also fetched you anything you wanted, even if you didn’t ask him to. Mention in passing that you’re thirsty and he’s already dashing towards the kitchen to get you a glass of water. Want to call someone? Argenti will hand you the phone and even help you dial the number. Struggling to find the front of your shirt while getting dressed? Do not fear, Argenti will dress you himself as if you were a princess and he was your servant.
🌹 His guilt drove him to go overboard in caring for you, as if hoping that by waiting on you hand and foot would atone for his failure to keep you safe. Of course, coddling you like a helpless child is no good either, so he reluctantly stops when you scold him for babying you. It will take him some time, but he eventually manages to keep his desire to come to your aid at bay.
🌹 He doesn’t say it, but Argenti pities you. He feels bad that you are unable to see firsthand the beauty that lies in the universe, so he takes it upon himself to describe it to you the best he can so you will know how beautiful the world around you is. His words are embellished and way too flowery when describing a building or plant (or anything else, really) but he describes things the way he sees them through his eyes. You discover that the world Argenti sees is far more beautiful than what you saw with your own two eyes when you still had vision. The images he paints in your mind are lovely and his version of the world became your favorite.
🌹 Aside from relaying things to you by mouth, Argenti also sought out music and audio novels he thought you would like. Beauty resides not only in the things we can see, but also in the things we can hear. He hopes that listening to all kinds of music and stories he finds across different planets, he can still enrich your view of the universe and give you a new hobby you can indulge in without sight.
🌹 Argenti’s heart breaks whenever he catches you tracing the jagged scars around your eyes with a sad expression on your face. You don’t say it, but he knows your disability weighs heavy on you since you can’t take care of your appearance the way you used to, plus you now have scars marring your face. That’s why Argenti regularly reassures you that you still look beautiful despite the scars and lack of makeup. He lavishes you in compliments the way he always has, but his every word comes from the heart. To him, you are as beautiful now as the day he met you. Little by little, he will help you get your self-esteem back.
🌹 While journeying, Argenti asks around for any renowned doctors that could restore your eyesight. Even if he must travel to the other end of the universe to find said doctor, he will make that trip if it ensures your happiness.
This will be a bit incoherent, but I just really want to talk about how good this chapter is, a brilliant penultimate culmination of everything the story has been so far. Perhaps the most prominent theme of the manga is 'communities' of all kinds, whether that be a family unit (the Aono family, the Kariya family), a friend group (Yuri, Mio, Fujimoto + Nozomi, etc.), a couple (Yuri and Aono), or a village - in other words, the difference between a group and an individual.
Throughout the story, it's often shown just how much power a community can have, usually with examples of overpowering individuals and causing great harm: E.g. However much they love each other, Yuri still sacrifices herself for the sake of her relationship to Aono. This is why the rituals that require sacrifice for some grand purpose are often accompanied by the 'Sange Sange Rokkon Shojo' chant or clapping; in the scene where Aono-Yuri is about to kill Hitomi-Aono, they are surrounded by a swarm of chanters, who almost seem to celebrate what's about to happen. Violence from the larger unit intensifies as it is conveyed through the smaller unit. These sorts of harmful traditions, these cycles of abuse, survive due to community, in fact. The ostracisation Yuri faces once she shows symptoms of her bond with Aono (which can of course be connected to the shaming of teen pregnancy) occurs because a collective draws a very clear line between 'us' vs. 'them'; ostracisation can only be inflicted by a community.
Even so, to these characters, is this not better than being alone? If Aono was not bound to Yuri, he would be completely alone. If Hitomi didn't have her children (the 'products of her love' with her husband), she would have likely killed herself much earlier. In the world of this story, death is synonymous with solitude - as Mio notes, each person exists in their own separate reality, but these barriers can no longer be surpassed once you die, condemning every ghost to an eternity of solitude. A community can perpetuate harm onto itself, but the truth is also that people cannot survive without each other.
That is what this chapter is about. It's not a refutation of the collective capability for harm, but a celebration of the good a community can do. Complete strangers to Yuri end up saving her life. Those few seconds each person sacrifices to her add up, and they are connected to her by her acquaintances, her friend group, and friends of her friends.
Community is a force for both great evil and great good.
the thing is like. i get that it's scary and makes people who do desire to get pregnant uncomfortable when we talk about the brutality and violence of pregnancy and the damage that pregnancy can do to your body
but you deserve to give informed consent to that process.
the lies around pregnancy - that it's inherently safe, that it doesn't do you permanent damage, that it's only extremely rare for people to die of pregnancy complications, etc like
all of these are lies constructed so that more people will get pregnant w/o knowing all that
there needs to be more talk about the impact of miscarriages and how common they are, how different abortion processes are and how accessible they are
but also like. talking about how pregnancy fucks your body up should not be taboo
this is a process that permanently changes most people's bodies, and that's even if the pregnancy doesn't do them like. severe illness or injury
and i just think everybody should have a right to KNOW that
bc to live in a society that intentionally obscures and hides facts about a completely optional and dangerous process does so for a reason, and that reason is based in a very sinister ideology that does not value bodily autonomy or informed consent
Here is a story about the depths to which pregnant people are seen as a vessel for a baby, and the importance of finding prenatal care that assumes you are a human and not a baby holder:
When I was pregnant I was in a million forums for pregnant people because (cough adhd hyperfixation) and I had something called SPD (Symphysis pubis dysfunction) (not Sensory Processing Disorder though I also have that) which is where your pubic bones separate early (more or less) because they get all loosey goosey as your body gets ready to crank that baby out.
Except my pubic bone got confused and got misaligned at like 3 months pregnant. I could barely walk. I couldn't roll over in bed. Doing something that required me to shift my weight from one foot to another like opening a door knob was like an excruciatingly painful knife being stabbed into my pubic bone, I can't express how intense and blinding it was.
So I am in one million baby forums like "am I dying what is happening why is there a knife in my pubic bone" and all these people are like "I have that too! my doctor says it's normal and not to worry because it doesn't hurt the baby. I just deal with it by laying in bed for months in excruciating pain and think about how lucky I am to be having a little miracle growing in my body."
So lol nope. I went to my midwife and they are like, "Oh squeeze a can between your knees look up a physical therapy youtube on SPD" and I did that can-squeeze thing and it CURED THE PROBLEM in ONE DAY. I had been SUFFERING, y'all, it felt miraculous.
And I was so full of rage (flames, flames on the side of my face) that people are being told "Oh, it's NORMAL just deal with it" "It doesn't hurt the baby." Like, look, yes it's NORMAL but it's 100% treatable!!! SPD (again, not Sensory processing disorder) affects 1 in 5 pregnant people.
I was lucky to have amazing midwives (need a gender neutral term for that profession, but they see pregnant men and women)(side note highly recommend midwives if you are gender nonconfirming/a man/etc) and I have DOZENS of examples of shit like this.
(Another example is post partum friends being like "oh I am peeing my pants 900x day after giving birth" and my doctor says it's NORMAL so I just dealt with it for decades. My midwives were like "Oh that's normal and also physical therapy cures that in like 2 sessions")
When my sister was looking to get pregnant she was given the best advice. She was told that being pregnant is an experience akin to being in a moderate sized car crash, in terms of risk and lasting injury.
Some people in moderate car crashes are very lucky, and walk away with zero injury. Some are very unlucky, and die. But most people fall into the third category, where they'll be injured at the time, then heal, and then for the rest of their life they have some minor and liveable complication from the injury. Like a knee that lets you know when the rain is coming, or a back that doesn't like seats without lumbar support, or a shoulder that never quite gets its full range of motion back.
The vast majority of people survive and thrive, like. But their body is never the same again. And people should know that when they make the choice of whether to put their body through that or not
my mom had a complication postpartum that caused pain and swelling in her left leg. at the time she was told it was "milk leg" and that it was normal and she'd be fine, but it never went away or got better. she finally found a doctor recently who was willing to do some tests and found out it's a condition called "May-Thurner syndrome" and had surgery to fix it
she's been suffering with this since she gave birth to me. I'm 38 years old. she had that surgery last week.
there needs to be more dialogue about the things your body goes through during pregnancy. "that's normal" or "everyone goes through that" need to stop being used to shut down conversations about the horrific, permanent damage that can be done to bodies during pregnancy and childbirth. just because it's "normal" doesn't mean it needs to be endured
I know this is not pertinent to the post but midwife is probably not gendered in the way you think. (The post gets this right btw but I see a lot of people getting it backwards) The “wife” in midwife (with the woman in OE) refers to the person giving birth, not the Obstetrician.
Granted, it still needs to be updated because not just women give birth.
Here is an etymologically equivalent but gender neutral term I just made:
Hey also: babies are not medicine, or unconditional love playthings. Having a baby won't save your relationship, or fix the problems in your life if you haven't done the work to get yourself in a good place mentally, physically, and emotionally, already. People don't ask to be born, and having to grow up with parents that transfer their problems onto their children just perpetuates the cycles of abuse and life-long issues. Given you're not likely to get clear, concise, unbiased healthcare anyway, as seen above, and it will be continually impressed upon you that it is your duty to have children, make sure you're not succumbing to social pressures, or wanting to be a parent for the wrong reasons.
Genuinely, I think a large part of why so many people are unwilling to talk about risks, complications, pain and injury around birth, pregnancy and lactation is because of how deeply ingrained the (primarily but not exclusively) religious idea that "a woman's body is designed to have children" is. Because if you actually sat down and looked, clear-eyed, at all the many ways in which even a healthy pregnancy can negatively impact the body, it would be that much harder to believe that design factors in at all, unless we're willing to argue that the designer was shit at their job. But if you're sold the idea that pregnancy is some divinely ordained and/or ultimate expression of Feminine Life Purpose, and then you have a bad experience, you're much more likely to blame yourself, or to think there's something wrong with you, or to suffer in silence because nobody ever told you this could happen so there must not be any easy solutions, and that makes me so fucking mad I could spit.

the image of the voodoo doll as a magic doll you stab to hurt people actually comes from a practice by english pagan witches of making poppets. the poppet would be made in the shape of someone you hate and filled with their hair and then stabbed with big needles repeatedly. and the poppets got conflated with voodoo dolls later on.
voodoo dolls were actually a way of keeping records when black people were prevented from reading or writing. a voodoo priest who would serve as a communities doctor would make a doll that looks like the patient, and stick a pin in it where the patient was experiencing symptoms, this would let the doctor keep track of who was having what issues. for example if a patient has a headache, the voodoo priest puts a pin in the dolls head. the priest gives the patient a treatment, when the patient comes back the priest knows which doll is theirs because it looks like them, and they know they're dealing with a headache because the doll has a pin in it's head. when the symptoms resolve the pin is removed, until then the doctor has a reminder that this is an ongoing issue for a specific patient.
I wrote this because when I saw it this post had a TL;DW that conflated the information about poppets and the information about voodoo dolls, creating new and original misinformation about voodoo dolls that comes from confusing them with poppets so like don't reblog that one maybe.
also someone else in the chain included this freeze frame so you can read it
