Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
⁂
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free
Reminder that libraries are literally foe this purpose. If you go to a public library with a research question you will make their day.

About ten, fifteen years ago I wrote a story about a guy living in a Capitalist dystopia. His walls, furniture, and tableware are all covered in smart displays. Basically animated wallpaper. It's sold as being able to turn your room or objects into anything - A nice forest view, outer space, a fantasy realm... but the companies that run this stuff keep sneaking ads in.
It gets so bad he's always being woken up by adverts that offer insomnia cures and better bedding that play when he tries to sleep.
So he buys the ad-free tier, and it's great... for a few months. And then he starts getting adverts from 'premium partners'. So he goes up a level... and the same thing happens.
So he jailbreaks his wallpaper and sends all the ad servers to 0.0.0.0 and voila... he can sleep.
Until this SWAT team blows his door off and drag him off to jail. The Ad companies are suing him for loss of revenue for the products he' notionally have bought if he'd watched their adverts, based on some weird 'The average consumer buys X products with an average value of Y' calculation.
The judge is like 'well I dun wanna annoy the sponsors' so he RICO's this guy's house and possessions and sends him to jail.
... which is a nice relaxed non-volent offender jail for the corporately disenfranchised. But because these people have no money... there's no ads and now he's happy because the only place he's free... is in prison.
Which at the time was a bit much and now it's like: Called it.
Elon's suing companies for not advertising because he's losing revenue. He's also cranking the price of Ad Free Twitter. Disney and Amazon play adverts on their paid service when services used to be free because of the adverts... and now you have to pay to watch the adverts or go up a couple of tiers.
And google's going around freaking out about ad-blockers.
OP did it hurt when Apollo's dodgeball hit you and made you write that story?
I HATE DONALD FUCKING TRUMP. HE CAN GO (bleeped for PG reasons)

The bravest people in the world after Palestinians are the Lebanese people.
Displaced Lebanese people saying they would gladly die if it gives Palestinian people some peace from genocide, while Ghazzawiyeh talk about how guilty and sad they feel because their genocide is the reason Lebanon is in this situation.
I am so incredibly saddened and so incredibly proud to be part of two ever-courageous and compassionate sister-peoples.
The bravest people in the world.
The occupation cannot defeat this.

Panchito just having the time of his life for today's prompt! I love this silly little guy sm
"like" if you see this post :(
basically i’ve worked retail and food service for almost 8 years straight and here’s the thing: russians are rude but they don’t really mean it unless they do and they never tip, italians are pushy and annoying but there’s a 50% chance they’ll tip, brits are overly polite and tip but in a way that feels insulting, arabs and muslims are always the most pleasant and sweet people in the world and will always leave at least a few coins as a tip, unless they’re a rich looking saudi then don’t even think for a second they’re leaving you shit and also they need their coffee hotter than a neutron star so just heat it up extra hot and save urself from the complaint, white americans are going to try their standup routine on you and then not tip, black americans actually tell decent jokes and always tip, the irish talk to you either like you’re an easily frightened child or a bartender but have a 30% chance for a tip, i could definitely go on

I don't think you guys realize but as a latinoamerican I have never met a person with a dishwasher who wasn't rich so every time you talk about the dishwasher I'm like holy shit my mutual is fucking loaded
By the way just to get this out of the way I don't care if you rent and the dishwasher was already there just the fact that the apartment you rent comes with a dishwasher speaks of the life quality level the population of the place you rent have to the point where they'd see a dishwasher as an essential appliance instead of a luxury. WHICH I'M NOT SAYING IT'S EITHER that's not the point. The point is you are culturally wealthier as a society than my hometown and those of everyone who agreed with this post. I'm not calling you rich specifically for having a dishwasher however I do find it necessary to acknowledge, as was the intent of the post in the first place, that perceptions of wealth vary significantly depending on the socioeconomic context people are brought up in. For example the things a low class usamerican might have access to could classify them as middle and even upper class in other places with different conditions. Hope this helps!!
