if you will allow me to rpf post right now. thinking about how sidgeno very nearly became a tragedy makes my tummy hurts, and i'm not even talking about geno's contract in 2022 or 2026 (altho both times show the organization's lack of priority w him), but that if the penguins hadn't won the cup in 2016 they probably wouldn't have been allowed to stay teammates for another ten years. there's so many articles at the time saying that the team needed serious change, and slowly and surely the roster and staff had been changing trying to account for that, and i don't think geno or even letang for that matter would have been safe from trades. take any big hrpf ship and they almost always end up with one or both members leaving their original team (in more recent memory: 1634). when sid and geno talked about wanting to win and wanting to keep playing together both meant the same thing: it was only by winning that they would be able to remain in the same team. winning the cup in 2016, 2017 and then reaching the 2nd round in 2018 allowed that, and when the team lost their playoff streak this was one the big risks they were running. even during the 1st round in the playoffs after the penguins were very nearly swept everyone kept talking about how they didn't want this game to be the last geno played. playing as a team necessarily means winning as a team and was only by working to the bone that sid, geno and kris got to play 20 years together. this was never a given. they very nearly didn't get to do it. they had to fight for it.
there's a family of local sandhill cranes that adopted an abandoned goose last summer and they're STILL together today even after migration.... i love them + they're local celebrities + nature is beautiful

When they slid into bed, he assumed that would mean giving David as much space as possible.
He didn’t want to crowd in close, take up space that wasn’t his to have. It was his idea to go out, so it’s his fault that they didn’t discover the issue with the hotel early enough to fix it. In the shining moonlight, he took responsibility for a mistake in a way that was new to him at that age.
But David tossed and twitched, couldn’t seem to keep still.
Not until Willy reached his hand out and laid it against the soft skin below his ribs. The twitching stopped, David’s movement reducing down to the slow expanse and deflation of his chest. Willy felt his own breath slowly fall in line, following only moments behind.
The next time David squirmed, disrupting the cycle building between them, Willy pressed his palm further into his skin, pressing his back to Willy’s chest. When he did that, the tension seemed to melt out of David, his muscles going lax and breath deepening again.
Willy copied him, holding tight, and soon dropped off into sleep.
The next morning, Pasta had giggled and laughed like nothing was amiss, no strange happenstance arisen in the night—even as they climbed out of the sheets, and before that, too.

David isn't necessarily thrilled about sharing a bed with Willy, but that's not what's keeping him awake. It's the anxiety, humming under his skin like a great, angry insect--a familiar enough sensation, since he started living so far away from his family. Somewhere where he struggles with the language so much, always asking himself questions like: what if there's an emergency, if I need help and I can't get it? What if all I can do is scream and scream and scream and everyone just watches me as I-
They aren't pleasant thoughts.
And as much as David appreciates Willy, as happy as he is to indulge his unlikely friend in whatever impulse he can get across, humoring him today with sneaking out to the city hadn't helped at all. The buzzing under his skin only gets worse and worse as he lingers on how there'd been an issue in the hotel room, the one part of his life that's supposed to be consistent, the single control in this entire experiment.
Willy's hand on his ribs is a surprise--enough to knock him right out of his head. There is a faint pressure and heat, a grateful sensation in the dark and quiet that's settled over his head, suffocating. David clings to the sensation for as long as he can before his thoughts start to drift again, the insectoid feeling crawling over him again.
Only, Willy drags him forward the moment his restlessness manifests again, back into the warm cradle of his body. That is enough to melt David down to his bones, enveloped in the pressure and heat he rarely gets from the team and never from anywhere else.
It's easy, then, to float away. Sleep comes, leaves, and still the easiness lingers. Breathing, smiling, listening--everything is easier when his skin holds the memory of Willy's warmth.
