you know what I've noticed about my music taste? I never have really liked "modern" music, that is to say pretty much anything past the 90s, with a few exceptions. and while this is partly due to my unexplained dislike of things that are popular (which I inherited from my mother), it's also because I prefer songs that tell stories. I'm drawn to classic rock because they sing about things other than love. and if it is a love song, its more complicated than just "I love you 5ever bbg" (take "operator (that's not the way it feels" by jim croce). david bowie, queen, elton john, kate bush, kiss, weezer, the beatles, abba, peter gabriel, rush, fleetwood mac, wham! all sing about things other than love, and if I am listening to a love song, it has to be really good or be indirectly talking about love. just thought it was interesting.

#this!!!!#i had the same realization and it makes so much sense #i also noticed that at music festivals where you see a lot of local/undiscovered bands #it’s the same thing…they tell stories or their songs are about mundane things that have a deeper meaning #why can’t this sort of artistry and storytelling break through anymore??
