there's been this weird shift from like when i was a kid and it was just customary that you didn't approach dogs you didn't know and you didn't touch a stranger's dog without permission to people feeling completely entitled to just touch your dog

Paleoanthropology for homo sapiens pre-recorded history is realizing that these creatures, for all intents and purposes, are EXACTLY like you. If you were born into their families, you would just act like one of them. There were humans before skyscrapers, before houses, before roads, before society, before written language. All of these things are just cultural happenstance over the course of history. Everything you do in your life is cultural, down to your most minute daily task or behavior. At your core, you are exactly like those people who made those cave drawings and hunted now-extinct creatures, the same brain working in the same body. Only happenstance in your place in recent history has made you so different.
