Turkey’s justice ministry is drafting legislation that would imprison people for publicly praising LGBT identity, criminalize same-sex engag
EXTRA INFO:
The Bill hasn't passed yet; however it is very likely. Turkey just shut down the social media accounts of LGBT+ organizations, and quietly banned/"made not possible to see" multiple dating apps for LGBT people such as Taimi. These are small steps leading up to this. Just less than a year ago the distribution of Estrogen was made ten times harder and hormone replacement therapy laws upped the transitioning age from 18 to 21. Please speak for us.
Since tumblr (at least according to the part I inhabit) is the mental health website, I thought this would be relevant to a decent number of you. (I know i have a default icon, but I promise I'm a real person, posting about a very real concern.)
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) announced last week that they're changing their billing policy next year so limited license mental health therapists in the state (21% of the mental health work force in Michigan) won't be able to bill them for therapy sessions if they work in a private practice or school setting.
Since BCBSM holds almost 70% of Michigan's commercial market, limited license therapists almost certainly will be forced out of private practice - interrupting care for (possibly hundreds? of) thousands of clients and severely restricting training opportunities for practitioners trying to get fully licensed.
Here are a few news articles about this:
Michigan Blue Cross to limit mental health benefit. Will thousands lose care?
‘Devastating’: Michigan mental health care workers concerned BCBSM billing change could cut access to counselors
Mental health providers warn BCBSM billing changes could disrupt care for hundreds
Ways Michiganders can help:
- Post about this on other social media platforms.
- Call your state legislator and say you're against this policy.
- If you have BCBSM insurance, call the number on the back of your insurance card and complain.
- Attend the rally that the Michigan Mental Health Counselors Association and the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers are holding in front the BCBSM building in Lansing on Tuesday, June 23rd, at 4:30pm. (Facebook post about the rally).
I tried blazing my original post too quickly. The National Association of Social Workers created a page here that has a great summary of the issue and more concrete ways to protest, including easily modified letters that can be sent to BCBSM leadership and state legislators.
in light of events in belfast rn, im gonna post this fundraiser
We are raising funds to support people who have been attacked, displaced and traumatised in racist attacks in Belfast.
if youre able to donate, itd mean a lot to everyone whos been affected by this

"held by pro-Kurdish fighters" sure is one way to say "governed by the will of the people through direct democracy, until the violent assault by the Syrian and Turkish states which is now repressing that democratic system and the people's autonomy" but okay! sure let's present things this way. say these regions were "under Kurdish rule" when that isn't how it works but sure!!!!!!!
no need to even mention that there's an official name for the government! just "former Kurdish controlled areas." anything to avoid lending any legitimacy to democratic socialism, or acknowledging the cultural genocide and ethnic cleansings going on. i just need everyone to be aware of how bullshit this is.
“I have to ask, who is this “us” from which the living world has to be protected? This, too, is an important question. Is it “humanity?” Is it the human “species” per se? Is it people, as such? Or is it our particular society, our particular civilization, with its hierarchical social relations which pit men against women, privileged whites against people of color, elites against masses, employers against workers, the First World against the Third World, and, ultimately, a cancerlike, “grow or die” industrial capitalist economic system against the natural world and other life-forms? Is this not the social root of the popular belief that nature is a mere object of social domination, valuable only as a “resource?””

Meta contractors in Kenya told two Swedish newspapers that they're being told to review highly sensitive footage recorded by smart glasses.
Much of the footage being recorded by the glasses is being sent to offshore contractors for data labeling, a widely-used preprocessing step in training new AI models in which human contractors are asked to review and annotate footage. It’s a laborious and highly resource-intensive process that tech companies often gloss over when discussing the prowess of their latest AI models. The reality can be messy. Meta contractors based in Nairobi, Kenya, told Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten in a recently published joint investigation that they’re being told to review highly sensitive and intimate data. “In some videos you can see someone going to the toilet, or getting undressed,” one contractor for a company called Sama said. “I don’t think they know, because if they knew they wouldn’t be recording.” “I saw a video where a man puts the glasses on the bedside table and leaves the room,” one data annotator told the newspapers. “Shortly afterwards his wife comes in and changes her clothes.” Other footage included imagery of people’s bank cards, users watching porn, or even filming entire “sex scenes.” An employee added that they felt forced to watch and annotate or else risk losing their job. “You understand that it is someone’s private life you are looking at, but at the same time you are just expected to carry out the work,” the employee said. “You are not supposed to question it. If you start asking questions, you are gone.”

Same exact playbook, down to the "but it was based on a lie."
It's kind of amazing how much this is the identical strategy. Focusing on the distress and harm of parents over the trans or autistic person themselves. Pathologizing the condition treating it as an epidemic, including calling it a social contagion causing a worrying "explosion" of diagnosis because it is "trendy."
Ignoring the experts on the subject while also appealing to "common sense" and dismissing all research that contradicts them while also appealing to "basic science."
Plus it's all the same quacks and actors behind previous medical and social moral panics saying them same things in the same ways and no one seems to acknowledge that.
she says in the article that she was inspired to think this way about autism after she started reporting on detransitioners. Her Twitter mentions are filled with prominent voices in the detrans terf movement. This isn't just similar, It is quite self-consciously an extension of the same movement.
She is also an advocate in favor of the Trouble Teen Industry, working with known eugenicist (and guy who talks a little too much about age of consent laws) Richard Hanania
We are not above nature. We are a part of it.
actually caring about the rights and safety of children is so stressful right now because a large amount of the time I'm sitting there internally screaming "THAT'S WORSE. THAT POLICY IS GOING TO ACTIVELY CAUSE HARM TO CHILDREN YOU ARE MAKING IT WORSE." and nobody cares because it's not actually about protecting children but the thing is children actually do need more protection very badly, just not like that. REALLY not like that. and the things that would actually protect children (education, greater personal autonomy, access to knowledge and resources that don't hinge on their parents being willing/able to provide them) would give adults less absolute power over them and that upsets too many people who see children as status symbols and tools and extensions of themselves.

it's really funny how the entire world basically just blew the fuck up six short years ago and nobody wants to admit that that may have had some lasting consequences lmao
like so much of Everything today is premised on the idea that the earth-shattering catastrophe which happened within living memory of everyone older than a third grader has had no meaningful material or psychological effects on the general public and i don't think that's good, lol.
"(some of) the top-line economic indicators (sorta) recovered (in most places) so everything is fine and we don't need to talk about it" is not a sustainable framework for interfacing with reality
"why is everyone so angry and paranoid now?" "why is politics so dysfunctional now?" "why is [x] [y] and [z] now? blah blah blah"

Very few narratives piss me off as much as the whole "let's give marginalized people LLM assistance for inclusion".
Inclusion does not mean giving marginalized people shittier versions of a thing. Sure you can give kids from poor backgrounds an LLM to "learn" but what you are saying is that poor people are not worthy of having trustworthy sources of information. When you say that older or lonely people can talk to chatbots to feel less alone you are saying that some people are not worth a social life.
This is a deeply inhumane perspective that goes actively against the ideas and ideals of inclusion.
