this is very interesting and fascinating. i know from personal experience as a korean also not to stick my chopsticks upright in rice because it resembles incense at a funeral and is considered to be an omen/bad luck
I live in Portugal and I've never heard of the salt and pepper thing. Sounds kinda silly to me. A lot of etiquette rules are silly.
Hell, any Portuguese restaurant you go to is likely to give you by default salt, pepper, olive oil and vinegar.
EDIT: I went through the notes and found someone else to confirm this. There's no salt/pepper rule in Portugal. And they also made the good point that the tip in Portugal isn't 10% it's circa 1 euros regardless of the price of the meal. And the tip is a reward for good service which you can omit if the service wasn't up to scratch.
