Ed had spent most of the time in the manga up until then not really showing any fear, acting like the typical shonen hero- completely okay with danger and unafraid of dying- not really showing any childlike vulnerability in the face of doom.

But then Scar comes along. And Ed is completely terrified. He has never been confronted by someone who wants to kill him before and the manga emphasizes this instead of glossing over it. It’s not something he instantly adjusts to. He goes into shock. He doesn’t understand what’s happening. He freezes up in a very realistic matter. All he can think is “this is bad. I’m going to die. this is bad” He’s overwhelmed so completely that it takes a loud noise to jolt him into running. The manga instantly reminds you this is a fifteen year old kid. He may act tough, but he is young and he is scared and he’s not at all ready to deal with a situation like this.

And then there’s touches like the fact that once Ed loses his arm, his center of gravity is thrown off balance. He forgets he can’t use it, and he’s unable to really adjust in time to scramble backwards without it, so he ends up falling. Most works would forget details like that, but instead the detail is used really effectively, driving in how disoriented and helpless Ed is.
